Selecting Your Arrows - Before the first shot

When you first begin your archery journey it can seem a bit daunting selecting your arrows. There are so many variables to consider. My top two variables are your draw weight and draw length.
No matter the brand of arrows, you need to follow a few simple guidelines for making your selection. Most all arrow manufacturers offer a recommended spine chart to get you going in the right direction.
Once you know the right-spined arrows for your bow, it becomes a matter of testing and tuning from there to get your arrows headed in the right direction.
Always inspect your arrows before you go out to shoot. A few minutes of prevention will take away a lifetime of regrets. Safety first always.

Thank you my friend for the comment and your time. I really appreciate your input. I have been asked that a lot, but I did not serve in the military. Not because I do not love my country, but there were things in my life at the time that steered me in other directions. My father was military and served in Vietnam as many others did. I learned a great deal from him. It’s a great experience to meet people like you on my channel. I hope you have a great evening my friend! Best regards

Excellent presentation Scott. As you pointed out we need to know our “draw length” before we go searching for spine and arrows. Stand with your back against a wall with your arms and hands fully extended horizontally out to both sides. Have someone take a measurement of your wingspan between the fingertips of your middle fingers. Finally, take that measurement and divide by 2.5 to determine your proper draw length. This is a good starting point for your draw length, but the length can vary depending on your shooting style and type of archery. This method tells me my draw length is 29” when shooting a regular recurve, and I would use a 30” arrow. If I am shooting Asiatic archery I draw 32”, and use a 33”+ arrow. As you said, just make sure your arrows aren’t too short for safety. Thanks Scott.

Thank you brother, I appreciate the comment and how you measure draw length. A lot of new archers need this information. Appreciate that you added this. I’m surprised and glad that I didn’t hurt myself when I started out. I really appreciate your time my friend. Have a great day brother! Best regards.

Awesome video Scott! And no you are not wrong, a center cut or a shelf cut a little just past center takes the dynamic spine totally out of the picture! That's the main reason that when I make my self bows I make them center shot or about an 1/8" past center. It's one less thing (And a big thing at that.) to have to worry about. Personally I don't want to have to play with the arrows, I just want to shoot them straight out of the box! Again, great video brother! God bless ya!

Thank you brother! All of my recurves are close or center cut, I tinker with dynamic a little less lately. The bow in the video has a shelf the size of the arrows I’m using, so it factors in some shooting this bow. Can’t say that I blame you not wanting to tune arrows, it’s a deep rabbit hole to go down, LOL. I’m with you brother simple is better , take ‘‘em out and shoot them. I really appreciate your time my friend! God bless you. Best regards

Enjoying this series. I'm not new to archery, but I am one of those people who think there is always something to learn even if I think its a topic I know well. Great presentation and great videos.

What a great plethora of information Scott. I truly need to get into this, I have been pretty much shooting the same arrows with all my Bows, I just get used to what they do for each bow and change my hold. Thank you again my friend Take care and God bless.

Thank you Sig Man. I appreciate the comment and your time brother. It’s definitely something that I encourage. Trial and a lot of error have helped me find what works best for me. Hopefully I’m sharing something that will help others along the way. I hope you have a great evening my friend. God bless

Hi Scott great presentation you do a great job in front of the camera a natural in my opinion. As a new archer I fell into the trap of buying too heavy arrows for light poundage bow, if there is no total arrow weight listed for the arrows don't hit the buy now button. Shooting 525grn out of a 25lb bow is the mistake I made not pleasant Shooting at all. Hope this helps new archers out there particularly on a tight budget where your buying on line. Keep on with the great video's 👍 Peace and Happiness Brother ✌️

Thank you so much for the comment my friend. I really appreciate it. I too made many arrow purchase mistakes along the way. There are so many purchase options these days, it is hard to make the right choice at times. Comments and insight like yours will hopefully help new archers along the way. Hopefully new archers will benefit from others trial and error. I really appreciate your time my friend! I hope you have a great evening. Best regards

Thank you brother! I appreciate the comment. I totally agree with you on the tuning. I have to be careful because I tend to go to deep down the rabbit hole. Lol. I got your pictures. I will be working on my site later today to make some changes and add photos. I appreciate you sending them. I hope you have a great day my friend! Best regards

Just a reminder. When it comes to "lefty" archers its complete opposite on horizontal plane. For vertical plane, nock high or low its same adjustments for both lefty and right handed archers.

If anyone would care for a nick recommendation, I can recommend Gold Tip GT nocks for typical .224 carbon shafts and the GTO nocks for smaller nano shafts. Many Olympic and competitors use those for there consistency of quality. Great string attachment to my strings, and have never had one damaged.

Great video! I'm really digging those 2 fletch arrows that you're shooting and you got me into experimenting with my own. I'm really surprised at how well they shoot but I'm trying to figure out what fletch length and height works best, also what offset from the nock. I shoot both recurve/3 under and lately thumb draw on the right and I'm trying to find an arrow that works best. So far, a vertical 2 fletch seems to tick all the boxes as long as I don't shoot with nock point too low, in which case it wants to cut my thumb off. On bow strings, I'd love to hear your thoughts on strand count. I've been making flemish twist strings with 2x7 (B55) but I find they might be too thin to click positively with Bohning glue on nocks, so I'm thinking 2x8, or going 3x5 or 6, idk?

Thank you my friend. I appreciate the comment and your time. I have used 3 and 4 inch lengths. Now I’m trying 5 inch and find they work the best for me. As for height that’s a work in progress. Not sure what offset my jig was set at, I recently changed it to almost inline with the nock because the offset was causing adhesion issues with the 5 inch fletching. I set my fletching two inches from the base of the nock mainly to allow for thumb draw. Using thumb draw I need more room between the nock and the fletching. Agreed on the nock being to low causing issues with fletching cut into the thumb. I use a method my friend showed me. Put your index finger on the bow string, balance the bow and tilt your hand upward, mark where your pinky lands on the string and it gives you an almost perfect nock height for asiatic bows. I use a moveable nock so it can be fine tuned and it’s good to go. For string builds I usually go 16 strands 2x8, Flemish and endless loop. This with center serving gives me a good lock on when I nock the arrow. I have made 18 strands before, but find they are a bit thick with center serving, and can cause release issues with the wrong nock. I appreciate your time my friend. Have a great evening. Best regards.

@@ScottWinters Thanks Scott, that is some valuable information there - very grateful for your response. That tip on the nocking point placement sounds golden, I'm going to try that tomorrow since I'm all over the place and can't find a method that seems to work. Likewise, on the strings you are confirming a theory I have that the conventional 14 strands is too thin. PS - I've been talking with AF Archery about a Tartar bow and I'm thinking of pulling the trigger on that. Really enjoy your channel.

You are welcome my friend. The nock method works well from what I’ve tried. Also if you use a movable nock you can tune it until you find the sweet spot. I’m glad the information helped you. Again, thank you for taking the time to watch my content and comment. It means a lot to me. I hope you have a great evening! Best regards
