Self-built Direct Conversion Radio Receiver for the Amateur Bands 80 - 40 - 20 - 15 meters.
This direct conversion receiver for the hf radio amateur bands was designed and built by me way back in 1995. Later, in 1996, it was published in two parts on RadioKit Elettronica magazine.
What you hear in the video was received with a simple antenna made from 4m long wire inside the house. By connecting the receiver to a suitable antenna tuned to the various bands, the reception is truly excellent and no different from commercial professional receivers.
This is undoubtedly the project that has given me the most satisfaction in my activity as an electronic hobbyist.
For those interested in making it, here is the pdf of the project (italian language):

Here, instead, there are some photos:

Looks nice and sounds great. Kind of reminds me of a Ten-Tec I used to own. 73!

Grazie mille Mattia! I put this on the SolderSmoke blog this morning. Did you build other things? Did you get your ham radio license? I think you should be issued a license purely on the basis of this project! 73 Bill N2CQR

Grazie mille Bill! I've also done other projects, but this is the most interesting. I am not a radioamateur (my father was one and had the license, he was I3ZQG). I have only a simple SWL listener license. Bye 🙂

That is the circuit for the Heathkit HW7, with band filtering and amplification for speaker output.

I didn't know this HW7 Heatkit and after your comment I went to look for the scheme: well, it's completely different, but really completely! So, why your message?

Beautiful work, the case is perfect, how did you make it?

I did it with a lot of patience 😅 First I drew the panel on graph paper, then I traced the drilling points onto the panel. Instead I made the black mask with adhesive plastic paper

Great job, did you try sinthesizer instead VFO?
@MattiaZamana
@MattiaZamana 11 месяцев назад
No because i wanted the scheme to be simple, however the vfo is very stable

How does the VFO meter work?
@MattiaZamana

It works as a voltmeter following the voltage variations on the varicap diode. Obviously it does not indicate the frequency, but it provides an approximate reference. In the description there are the links to the scheme.
