"I'm very passionate about understanding how to live like a human" 😊 - that may be one of my favorite things you have said, and it may just be my new response line when people ask me why I do things like homeschool my kids. Thank you so much for making these videos, Autumn. This channel has been truly life-changing for me. Seriously...through you my eyes were opened to the Charlotte Mason world, I found the CMEC, and I have had so many beautiful and worthy things to ponder and thoughts that have challenged me in good ways. It has changed my homeschool, my mothering, and myself. Thank you. One thing that I do when I need to declutter and step back for some self care is I tune out of social media....except for one special time slot every couple of weeks where I get to listen to the new video on The Commonplace. ❤Take Care.

Wow, Katie! Thank God! My favorite thing about living ideas is they can't die! They'll always be noble, lovely, and life-giving and they will always be what people (moms!) need. Talk about gifts that keep on giving. I hope you love your CMEC year! I think they're absolutely tremendous!!

"You don't need a special life to care for yourself." "All the things that you are doing matter." Thank you, friend. I am not even a mom yet but am so encouraged and humbled by this video. I am a deep thinker and tend to get in the weeds on what-ifs and wanting things to be perfect. Needed to hear this today. Bless you! 🙏🏻❤️

I’m two minutes in and I agree wholeheartedly and am so excited to hear the rest! I haven’t known how to bring this up with other women without offending them, so I’m thrilled you’re talking about this to help me expand my vocabulary about the topic.

It's a hard one to discuss sometimes! I actually tried to film this last year and felt like I was too snarky and needed to put it to bed until humility made herself known. Then I realized I was a fake martyr and-boom!-it wasn't just annoyance at modern self-care but a recognition of learning to love rightly overall...which I am still very much learning myself.

So relatable. I’m def a go getter as well, but I have never had any issues doing things for myself 😅 BUT I give myself some credit that it’s enriching activities like studying my religion, reading poetry, knitting, sewing, textile dyeing, learning etc. My problem is priority setting. Sometimes I have a laundry basket of clean clothes sitting around for days…weeks? Hahaha 🤪

Thank you for this fresh take on self care. You handled it beautifully. This is timely because at the beginning of a school year the temptation of wanting to be a robot is very strong. It utterly annoys me but I see it as the way through. Your gracious words of not needing a special life to care for yourself and what you do matters were enlightening to me on this journey. How to live like a human for me is having hard stops in my day for certain practices, simple living including having less stuff and eating simpler meals and practicing the art of being present by decreasing phone usage bigtime. Thank you, Autumn!

Yes! The hard stops are SO important. I call those "pegs" and they really make a difference. Yours are great ones. From one machine to another, we were made for better!

Coming in late, but wanted to say so very much appreciated this perspective. Thanks for sharing. You (and your viewership) might appreciate the framing "self stewardship" as in contrast to self care. It was coined (to my knowledge) by Dr. Tasha Chapman at Covenant Theological Seminary. It's been a helpful framework for me in my neighboring, motherhood and vocational work in a local church.

I, too, am almost allergic to the over-preached idea of modern "self-care"... but I seem to fall very easily into the ditch of false martyrdom! I very much appreciate you (once again)sharing an opinion here that goes against the standard modern protocol. Keep up the good work!

As a homeschooling mother of a young baby (with 3 other young ones too), I really relate to your breath of intensity at 14:09 😂 Made me laugh out loud! Also, I am really appreciating all this humanizing discussion! I have been considering this mindset in my own life, so very much enjoying this food for thought. Especially as mothers, it is so easy to begin to treat ourselves as the one who does the things, and not as an image bearer, created by God with limits and capacities that grow and change.

😂 I loved your part about the couch cushions!! I have told my kiddos for years that we will buy nice new couch cushions when they (the cushions) have learned not to live on the floor, as they are constantly playing on the floor or everywhere else, except on the couch where they are meant to live. My kiddos are now 11 & 9 and we still don't have new cushions 😂😂 Maybe one day when they're adults???

Hahaha, I doubt you're ever getting couch cushions, Megan! My kids commandeer the cushions but * also * the reading chair and every dining room table chair to build their fortresses; I now regularly sit on the piano bench. Ha!

Over 10 years ago I picked up Ann Voskamp’s book One Thousand gifts and have been keeping a Thankful Journal ever since that first reading ( I read it over 17 times, Ann’s book and the practice of keeping a running list of all that I am thankful to God for helped me through a bit of anxiety I was experiencing).

You voiced some much that has been on my heart that I couldn’t put into words. This modern self-care mindset is so dangerous for ourselves and our families. Thank you for the perspective and tips on how to live the life we are striving for. Haha! As a mother of five children (one being a toddler), getting a full eight hours is a fantasy but I should practice going to bed earlier and get as much as I can. My night owl spirit wants to rebel but I know it’s true. 😆
@thecommonplacehomeschool
@thecommonplacehomeschool 9 месяцев назад
Haha, I know! As I started working on my first Rule of Life (with three under four at the time), I kept wanting to put something like "8 hours of sleep" on it but knew it was unrealistic. That was my first ah-ha(!) moment of practice versus an expectation/demand. I can't make demands like that but I can cultivate the discipline to go to bed by 10p or 9p, depending on the season of life!

I have a 3yr old boy, twin 2 yr old boys (they are 14 months apart), and I'm currently 26 weeks pregnant. Autumn, have you read Eve in Exhile by Rebecca Merkle? If not I highly recommend and would love you to throw it in a video with your thoughts and comments. It's one of those books I keep coming back to again & again to rekindle my fires of inspiration and enthusiasm. It definitely qualifies as a "self care" or as I like to think "soul care" book, which is better and more fulfilling than self care.

I know this was a minor side note you made, but i also find so many products that are marketed to women as ugly. I really cant stand the loopy, over the top, "hand lettering" fonts and kitch-y graphics. I even think floral patterns are often over done. I find there is more beauty in simple things than in busy things.

Ugh. Yes. That messy "cursive" font. There's also that weird, tall and skinny print (very common with the Godawful Modern Farmhouse and some Minimalism style trends). Or worse...the *mixed* fonts. Ack! Wake me when it's gone!

I don't like the nauseating cutesy stuff, either. The worst of it, in my opinion, isn't even the childish stickers or the ugly fonts. The worst of it, in my opinion, is all the stupid "motivational" drivel they tend to plaster all over it. Little catchphrases (You've got this! Girl boss!), cliché quotes from random famous people (Eleanor Roosevelt, Maya Angelou), affirmations (You are beautiful! You are strong!), just...trite, hollow, patronizing platitudes. Ugh.
