Here are some guidelines on how I clean my Kamado Joe grills. My method doesn't put undue stress on your ceramics by applying extreme heat. 500-550°F is all you need to get the job done. The objective is to burn out all the accumulated grease residue. Don't be concerned about turning the inside of the grill white again. After you have burned out the residue, I have included some simple instructions for removing the firebox, cleaning out the ash, and reassembling the firebox in a very easy manner.

The trick with the petals alone was worth it

The paper towel trick was just what I needed to know. I struggled putting the petals back together. I needed four hands to make it work. Thanks again John!

Thanks for showing us this. I did not know all of these steps. I thought about paying someone to clean it, because I thought it'd be hard. But, you showed how to make it easy.

I like the paper towel trick for the petals. That process was tough to do with only two hands.

Thanks, it's the best advice I have seen. I am new to kamado. Any advice on the vent on top. Mine has started to flake, and it's less than a year old.

I would skip the wire wheel. What you're doing is embedding regular steel from the wheel into the stainless of the fire ring, which will end up promoting rust on the fire ring.

My fire ring is extremely hard to put back in and I have the same pit and it take way longer than 20 minutes to get that hot

Am I doing something wrong? When I put my firebox in, I overlap the petals at the top and bottom. They hold so that I can easily slip the ring on without having to put any paper towel behind the petals.

Thank you for your video. Can i use 1 lb charcoal (instead of 2 which you showed in this video with full ash basket ) to achieve the 550F. If yes-how long time it will take with dome closed with fully open top and bottom vents. Thanks

I actually cleaned my grill, twice, as there was a trouble spot. All looked good. I did the open and close, like you. White smoke stopped. All went well. About a month or two with no use I grilled. My chicken cooked beautifully but I noticed a few pieces had the black tar of dripping grease. Where was that hidden? Is it possible that the vent had excess grease inside of it? How would you deal with that? Thanks for your video and tips. Very helpful.

I’m confused about your comment about stainless steel rusting. It’s not suppose to rust like cast iron. I’ve cleaned my Grilla Grills “Kong” with high heat and my stainless steel grates have never rusted.
@scottburton4236
@scottburton4236 3 года назад
I do love your videos though.

Stainless steel will rust once it has been exposed to temperatures over 700°F. Most pellet grills won't produce enough heat for that to happen.
@larryl5598
@larryl5598 2 года назад
@@AtlantaGrillCompany You never took the KJ over 550 degrees. What would be the worry with the stainless parts under 700F? If that is correct trying to protect the grates, the divide and conquer, and the ash basket would be subject to rust also wouldn't they?
@AtlantaGrillCompany
@AtlantaGrillCompany 2 года назад
@@larryl5598 Yes.. those parts are going to get rusty over time but they are not coming into contact with your food. I don't worry as much about those parts rusting.

Some decent tips, but you completely skipped over cleaning the top vent. That's the only reason I came here actually. I started cleaning mine today, and it was filthy, and caked in gunk. Moving it back and forth a few times IS NOT going to clean it. I was hoping to find out about getting it like new again, and maybe some preventative mx, such as oiling it up.

Take the slider off and use Dawn Power Wash in between cooks.

If you have that much charcoal and wood chunks left after a Boston butt cook, you put way too much fuel in.
@AtlantaGrillCompany
@AtlantaGrillCompany 3 года назад
Agreed. When I cook butts that are not gonna be in a video cook, I keep less than 2lbs of lump in the grill at any given time and leave the top and bottom vents fully open. That's the best case scenario in a Kamado. But it's not a good method to teach a beginner. Most kamado owners want a set and forget setup. Most don't want to tend a fire every 60 to 90 minutes. - John Setzler

@@AtlantaGrillCompany I believe it is just at the beginning. It's the same in the other videos I've watched too. Really good content, I wish I had said that in the first comment.
