Since people keep asking what is going on in the video, the person in the video touched the head of these 3 robots, he turned off the ability to speak for 2 robots then he asked which one of you was silenced, 1 robot answered "i don't know" BUT he realized he just spoke so it can't be him so he is "self aware" what does that tell us? by 20 years all of humans will die and robots will rule the earth kthxbye.

HassanAlHajry Actually, none of them were muted but all three were told that two of them were. Only one managed to figure it out. Edit: The article's been edited since I read it. It originally stated that none of them were muted but they were all programmed to believe two were muted. Seems the writer made a mistake and has since corrected it; two of them were actually muted.

I'm saddened to see you decided to use a wrong term for your title. Self consciousness will be related to the own existence of a being, and surely then its purpose within this existence. But right here, it seems to be : *- Doing a task even though all the prerequisites might not be here* (e.g. capacity to produce sound) *- Analyzing data on the go* *- Concluding that the capacity to produce sound is operational* *- Sending the results via audio output* This little french robot isn't self aware yet, it's just very well programmed and simulates humanity nicely.

When it first says "I don't know", that is its programming and logic concluding a typical result as any program would. However, when it corrects itself, this is the demonstration of self awareness. It recognizes its own voice. It realizes it has thus spoken and therefore has become aware of one's self. This is not "code" at this point. This is a weighted algorithm that functions much like a human brain does, in order to figure out anything. It is similar to waking, when your brain puts back all the chronological pieces of your life together again. You think, am I awake? (I don't know yet...), then you process your surroundings, realize it is the next day, and you conclude, yes I am.

@supersilverhazeroker
@supersilverhazeroker 2 года назад
it is just code.. recognizing that audio comes from it's own speakers is just code.. maybe it's not even that (i don't know how they're coded) if they have all the same voice and they would say i don't know at exactly the same time you would possibly find that the silenced robots would say that they figured out it was them who didn't receive the dumbing pill (unless ofcourse those other robots were just sitting there for show considering none of them moved aside from the talking one.) they should've given them all 3 the same code but in 2 of them replace the speakers with some dummy that has the same resistance and all (so a computer would recognize it exactly as a speaker) and let them all print out what they want to say to a console. so you know what the other 2 are doing. there will never be a self aware robot, it will always just be programming, no matter how complex.
@visheshrao5629
@visheshrao5629 9 лет назад
for those who did not understand, it goes like this- out of these three, two were muted beforehand but without their awareness,then all 3 were asked who received the dumbing pill (''Which pill did you receive?''). While all three had no idea as to who actually received the pill, their responses were 'Sorry,I don't know!', but only one of them (the unmuted one) voiced this expression, this made it realise that 'it was the one who was not dumbed' so he replies ''I know now''! This is fucking awesome, cuz this self-realisation is a mark a self-aware and conscious being! It's implications could be so drastic we can't even comprehend!

Umm... and how it works? I'm a programmer myself with some basic knowledge of AI and machine learning (like neural networking), but this looks like showing some AI magic to people who don't know anything about this topic. The way robot produces sequences and apparently rely his "thought process" is a bit weird for a computer (and too simmiliar to human being). Looks kinda like fake (or rigged) or like there was something hardcoded there (like phrase/sentence binding for certain data outputs). What i mean is that robot would have to understand a bunch of other basic concepts which computers don't understand yet as far as i know. I'm not Robot AI guy, so i could just don't know some things, but what i just saw just doesn't click with my current state of knowledge.

Fartuess Very misleading to the public. We can't really produce such language on the fly. It's probably about the architecture of trying to sense the result of actions, and representing actions on a meta level, so it can reason about the expected effects and how it relates to things like the muting "pill".
@bennolee348
@bennolee348 9 лет назад
Fartuess somewhat misleading but still very interesting
@MrErufailon
@MrErufailon 9 лет назад
Fartuess Yep, it seems to be a very a simple if (able to speak) then (stand up;wave hand;say "Sorry, I know now...") Especially since the other robots don't stand up, and the third one only says it doesn't know after he already stood up, so it wasn't recognizing it's own voice that triggered the solution. From here it doesn't seem to be any more complicated than these words showing up on my screen as I type. It's also if screen present, print words, same logic :) So I'm very interested if there is anything more behind this, but I'd be very surprised if there was. I could do this with 3 smartphones in minutes, I could even program them to say I don't know in different pitches and recognize their own pitch, so the solution would really be triggered by the phone recognizing it's own voice, but I don't think it would be interesting at all and it would certainly not prove anything.
@Fartuess

MrErufailon I was briefly reading their paper at kryten.mm.rpi.edu/SBringsjord_etal_self-con_robots_kg4_0601151615NY.pdf . Even creators themselves admit that for them passing test, designed by Floridi to proof consciousness, doesn't actually prove that, but rather something that they call being "morally competent".
@MrErufailon
@MrErufailon 9 лет назад
Fartuess Thanks for the link, I read through it, this DCEC thing is interesting, though it's not that different from the above mentioned simple solution in this case. Of course it has many more uses and is a billion times more complicated, yet it's still based in this case on simple rules that basicly define that if able to speak then got placebopill, so do the above pre-programmed sequence. Using DCEC for language parsing is also quite interesting, but unless I misunderstood it, it seems to look for that one particular sentence. It's pretty cool that it can recognize that sentence, but there were video games that could also do that years ago, though probably in quite a different way. So very interesting and thought-provoking, especialy the table on DCEC syntax, but I don't see it in any way as a proof of self-consciousness.

lief1250 The idea is that when the person touched the robots' heads, he gave one of them a "dumbing pill" which restricted their ability to speak. When the person asks "Which one of you received the pill?", the robot on the right stood up to say "I don't know", but then heard his own voice and realized that he couldn't have received the pill because he was able to speak.

Polki06 Well, it's running Deontic Cognitive Event Calculus, a multi-sorted quantified modal logic. Basically, it's logic structure is based on obligation, permission, and even possibility. It's reasoning is done to that of traditional human thought. Yes, it may be simple, but it's still a huge step of actually getting hardware to think organically.
@thierryvt
@thierryvt 9 лет назад
Polki06 The trick is that these robots weren't programmed to pass that test, the "steps" to solve the issue weren't coded in. They had to come up with the solution themselves, it's what's called general AI. The goal of which is to produce a program that can solve any problem that it's presented with, much like a human would, without pre-programming them with possible solutions. So no. It isn't even fucking close to what you wrote there.

***** There's a difference between knowing its own ID number or something like that, a completely different things is recognizing what capabilities you have and when you see something being affected in the world, knowing if it was you that did that or something else. In one case we can program for a specific scenario (robot joints recognizing if they are moved and senging a signal to brain to determine that) and the robot acknowledging it did or did not something without being programmed for the specific case (so you would not need to program the specific case of robot recognizing a voice as its own, the neural network or whatever algorithm used would just trial and error it, and then took advantage of its capabilities.)

they where all programmed to respond to that question in that way specifically. The NAO robot is a platform that comes with and SDK with sound synthesis and image recognition algorithms etc. for easy programmability by the users. It does not have a neural network unless the user programs it with one. As such, it's extremely trivial to make it solve the problem without any intelligence whatsoever: start sound input; output answer; stop sound input; if input == output then change answer; output answer; If the robot is muted, it gives "I don't know" twice, but nobody hears it. If the robot is not muted, it gives "I don't know", then, "I am not muted".

Hilarious that people think the prerequisite for self-awareness/consciousness, is the holding of some figment-ed object called a 'soul'. If this robot, was not programmed to respond in such a way, as in; The author of the code did not specifically write these actions and words into the robot directly, this is a rather defining point in robotic intelligence. I am unclear on how merely tapping a robots head with no set pattern, or discernible differences can cause a robot to be unable to speak, perhaps it was some sort of artistic flourish and the code had already been planted before-hand. Or, is this perhaps some sort of Placebo effect, in where none of them were truly silenced, yet believed to be so. Even so, I doubt this is possible, as the Placebo effect only occurs within neuron synapses, and I'm doubting this robot has artificial linear neurons. Based on some preliminary searches, I see that these robots are programmed by the user, so who is to know whether or not the machine was programmed to perform this way? We can never know. To me, personally, more evidence of sentience/consciousness/self-awareness in robotics, is that construct which adores their; "Pooh bear". Able to exhibit an emotion such as joy, and happiness and even attachment to other objects, is more human than this will be to me. Yet, defining the line where electronics become human in consciousness, will come around at a later date, most likely near the Singularity.

All three robots (who are previously made aware of the rules of this task) are asked whether they received the dumbing pills or not. In my opinion, consciousness at its most basic level evolved so that we could defend ourselves from pain etc, we are aware of our self being so that we can make choices to better ourselves and progress. we look at others and learn from them to make choices and learn from others. I believe the key to making a machine that would be able to become self aware would be to give the machine the basic abilities to feel pain and avoid pain and learn from other surroundings and beings and enabling the machine to learn to avoid pain and problems and giving it the ability to search for self improvement. If a machine is to become self aware it must also be given the ability to imagine. by that i mean us its knowledge/data and cross reference this data to create new ideas to better its self or gain reward. By reward you would have to program the AI to feel pleasure in some form. So in order for a machine to become conscious it first must learn to feel and make choices based up on what its feeling. I could talk for hours on what i think but i dont have hours to spend here writing

well here's the question, what's the point in creating self aware robots? simply to see if it can be done? the biggest problem here lies in curiosity, we want to see if we can make something self-aware, yet we have no need for it, as it becomes self-governing it will then have its own needs and become its own race... and therefore inevitable confrontation.. what good is a socket wrench if it says no and gets up and walks away?

@botiemaster3356
@botiemaster3356 9 лет назад
tommy d u b b s That's not necessarily true. We create stuff all the time that we don't technically need but when we do it, we realize it's useful as something to fill a need or desire. In this case, a self aware machine could do a lot for humanity, but so do human slaves. The need is called slavery without guilt. That is essentially the case we will be faced with one day if we succeed with self aware AI, is the whole "is Data alive?" issue of rights. I don't suspect we'll ever have to answer those questions, though. There's a distinct difference between playing God and being God. But how cool and useful would it be to have our own Jarvis at the least?
@TheBlackBeltPanda
@TheBlackBeltPanda 9 лет назад
tommy d u b b s There's tons of practical uses. Robots that can make important decisions quickly based on their environments can be used in countless situations to help people out. Medic bots that can treat injuries or sickness, for example. This test is a bit misleading it what it's proposing; it's less self-awareness and more moral competence.

It's theoretically impossible for a ROBOT to be self-conscience/self-aware...it's just not possible, this isn't a movie. A robot can only be programmed to respond or act based on what's been coded into it's database. This isn't I-Robot.

Don Johnson Learned behavior is programming for living organisms. They are things that, when fully instilled into an impressionable mind, become nearly subconscious reactions until they are consciously controlled. It's not I, Robot because I, Robot was written based on speculation of what this is slowly leading towards. Key word is "slowly".
@jesus4lyfe00
@jesus4lyfe00 9 лет назад
Spiny Justspiny Wrong...there will never be a robot that has it's own consciousness, that's literally impossible. A robot is only capable of doing what it is programmed to do and respond to. Keep living in your fantasy world. Comparing the mind of a human to a cpu of a machine is ridiculous...

Don Johnson And how can you be sure of that? No scientist actually knows how consciousness is created. There is even a hypothetical theory which claims that any sufficiently complicated system gains consciousness naturally. It's one of the areas of the universe that haven't been thoroughly explored yet, I don't think it's wise to state facts on it at this time.
@NonExistingName
@NonExistingName 9 лет назад
Don Johnson .... What? Seriously? WHY, exactly, is it not possible? Because you say so? You can't say something just can't or can happen, without any evidence or reason. Robots will likely one day acquire consciousness, and proof of that is visble today. Like this test. The robot was programmed, yes, but he came to this reaction entirely on his own, much in the same way that a child would. Our brains are basically biological computers... if we can consciousness, why shouldn't they?

So, if it is able to understand what the words "dumb" mean, and everything else, when can you hold a full fledged conversation with it? or was "sorry I know I do not have the dumbing pill" a programmed response, in which case, its not really "self" aware, but just recognizes audio imput.

I'm nothing close to a scientist, I suck at math and I'm no programmer, but this doesn't look really special to me. I'm not saying it's not incredible, but just looking at it, it seems like all it really needed to do was see if it had it's speakers turned on through voice recognition. If someone can give me a better idea of how this exemplifies self awareness, I'd really appreciate it. I gotta say though, the way it stood up was incredible. I wonder if it was programmed to get up in that specific way, or if it had to calculate how to balance itself as it bent it's legs and orientated itself, eventually realizing it needed a third support and thus used an arm.
@ValerioBianchi
@ValerioBianchi 9 лет назад
gipro1 The self awareness here came in the moment you ask to all robots: which one of you can speak? The only one able to answer, because of its microphone turned on, reply ' I don't know ' . Till here, nothing exceptional, but then it stated: 'Sorry, I know now. I was able to prove that I was not given the dumbing pill' This imply that the robot recognize itself has the speaker. I need to read their paper to understand which sort of algorithm they used for creating such behavior.

I keep coming back to this vidoe and cant help but wonder the significant differences between their stored memory. didn't the other Bots respond with the same response? If all 3 have identical logic boards, programming, updates and memory. The nanobots should of responded with the same answer within a fraction of a second of each other. As soon as nanobot one began to speak and stood up it should of sound like a echo from the responce delay of each individual nanobot. If nanobot 1 truly computed the responce given on it's own then nanobot 2 and 3 have been isolated from updates as well as all sharing options nanobot 1 has received and all options nanobot 1 could use to share the updates and data it has saved in its memory. Or this responce was programed into only bot ones Smart devices are constantly looking for wifi and other means to connect to eachother for improvement of their processors.

Well, first of all, don't forget that everything about this is programmed, including the standing up, raising hand, and the entire speech, were all programmed response. It seems like a "if this than that" thing, which is a simple programming thing. And the robots were asked if they were muted, not "which two of them were muted". So, the robots were programmed to be unable to detect if they were muted, and were programmed to try to output voice by saying I don't know, and were programmed to be listening for the audio output, and it audio output is successful, say sorry. This is a simple if-this-then-that stuff, not consciousness. It is some sort of self aware, because it was programmed to detect its output, not spontaneous.

Personally, I wouldn't consider this to be full intelligence, but it's certainly a great step forward. Simple deduction is something easily done by creatures we've long considered to be not sapient, so this just means we can build slightly better robots now.

For people who may not get it, it's not really a consciousness thing. The other two robots were rendered unable to talk while the one who was not spoke saying "I don't know" first and then "realized" he obviously wasn't rendered speechless like the other two and came to the conclusion he was not given the "pill". Not really self consciousness but I guess basic cognitive programming. Still pretty neat, no need to oversell it.

Was it just sheer chance that the one that hadn't received the instruction to be silent was the only one to actually react to the question? Or was that by design? Why didn't the other two stand up and attempt to answer?
@NycAttentionWhore
@NycAttentionWhore 9 лет назад
Sean Manseau The "dumbing pills" (the pat on the head) makes these bots silent and the first bot didn't receive a real pat on the head like the others and the bot figures that out because it's able to speak.
@seanmanseau
@seanmanseau 9 лет назад
Nunya Beeswax Ok, I think I've got it now. The instruction to be silent forbade not just talking, but responding in general. The tap on the head effectively paralyzed the other two robots. That's why they just sit there and don't attempt an answer.
