maybe, and it doesn't happen very often, but if a complete stranger attacks you, it's better to have a practiced self defense response than nothing. Saying it won't work is kinda defeatist. Not every person who attacks you is a trained fighter anyway, some of them are just kinda crazy. Nothing wrong with practicing moves. It's good exercise, it's fun and on occasion it might come in handy. Just don't try to fight crime. That's where you get in trouble. My late black belt friend used to try to fight crime.

mattaddison19 Matta, self defense should always be combined with - don't fight if you don't have to because you never know what the other guy is going to pull - knife, gun, mace or just plain crazy and that's true if you're a 250 pound dude or a 110 pound chick. Nobody should fight if they don't have to. But if you have no other recourse but to strike and try to disable, that's when training is better than no training. I disagree with your statement which implies that women shouldn't learn this stuff. They shouldn't be stupid and overconfident with technique. Nobody should, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't learn and practice technique. Doesn't matter what you weigh, it never hurts to train and learn technique, but teachers of any technique should stress that you shouldn't fight if you don't have to and to be cautious always, and that applies to big guys too, not just the ladies.

If the guy who approaches her is homeless and a little crazy, not a 6'2, 220 lb mugger, a bit of stun him and run very well could work. If he's built like a linebacker, just give him the purse. In fact, giving away the purse or wallet is one of the first things I learned in martial arts class. Don't fight just for a few credit cards and $30. But if the guy won't leave you alone, a bit of strike a tender spot and run makes sense.

There's nothing wrong with self defense training so long as the teacher doesn't teach nutty overconfidence. Avoid a fight if you can, strike and get away if you can't avoid. Safety first. Getting away is part of being safe. Clowns trying to tell people "Learn to do an Armbar, take 3 years of MMA - yeah, great, if you have 3 years to practice, but that doesn't make basic self defense moves a bad thing to learn.
