@@zoeydeu2261 The point is it does take a lot of time and effort to get really good art anything worthwile ... that's never been debunked. I would say 5-10,000 hours is about right.
10,000 hours equal 5 years (40hrs a week) work and study something that you want to be good at. Thank you Mark for being realistic and telling people the truth. 👍
I remember that I've just tried several things, before I stopped on programming. I tried photography, ux-ui design, photoshop , even working in the office in local education department... but then I spend more than a year learning, before I found my first job as a developer
@@za_izhar i personally think that it is more ideal to improve general aspect of your being, for instance your health, your relationship, your family, aside from just this one thing that YOU THINK will define your life. More ideal in the sense of by pursuing to improve other aspect of your life, you will achieve that one thing you're pursuing in a better way. But I'd love to hear what others thought about it.
Well, if you look at cartoons, you'll probably see that what makes them so silly is that they are not proportionate. For example they may have an abnormally huge nose but a small body. What i learned is that if you want to really improve your life, its best to focus on more than one are of your life.
@Krasi Ilievbut , i personally believe that the time you put in something is not all that important. for example, when you study, it is not by reading a book 100 times that you become an expert. It is by doing the right things and testing yourself. Finding your weaknesses and practicing THAT things that you become a master. If you do the aame mistakes for 10000 hours, it is not much development i think. Whats your opinion?
exactly like that. I hate when people tell me that the way to improve something is by "keep doing it", yeah you can keep doing it, but if you keep doing it wrong you'll never improve. You improve only with feedback.
"mastering any skill, is no walk in the park." I'm 1500 hours into my 10k hours of park-walking practice, wtf are you talking about? Park walks can take a lifetime to master.
i hope you reside in a country that has manned space program (space tech is military, you're not going to get in without being a citizen), this fact alone has crushed the dreams of a lot of kids :P
"step 3: iterate for 5000 to 10,000 hours". yep, you nailed it. As a designer I can say that 90% of the work is iterating on an idea 10s of times until it's just right.
Insightful and useful advice Mark - as always (first-time responder, long time reader). As an Olympic athlete, I did absolutely follow all these steps with a master coach who A) focused on the fundamentals and B) provided a constant Gatling gun of feedback - short, sharp barks of compressed instruction, and C) I put in my 10,000 hours early. As an 8 year old, I completed thirteen "century" rides (bike ride of 100 miles in one day) in one summer that year. Two potential caveats to consider... 1) Sometimes, unfortunately, the feedback you might receive is wrong... For me, joining the Olympic team after years with my local coach I received poor advice and feedback and I went from 12th in the world to 34th in the world to not making the team 2 years later. Fortunately "self-belief beyond all reason" (Jens Voigt) led to me quitting the team, refocusing on the training program that worked best for me and one year later breaking every US national record by a large margin and going on to win a silver medal in the Olympics. 2) Second caveat... If you don't have a natural talent for something, well, you'll simply never be able to put in the 10,000 hours - the disappointments will pile up and at some point, you'll give up well before putting in the requisite amount of time. Anders Ericsson missed this point. It is not "what" is required for breakthrough success (for sure it is ~10,000 hours of diligent practice) the real question is "why?". Why does anyone bother (like you Mark! - 9 years of blogging!) to put in that amount of time? I would suggest it is because you occasionally enter the state of "flow" because you are doing what you do best and through a "variable interval positive reinforcement protocol" (see Skinner Box) you become inadvertently trained to provide the most amount of work. Flow provides norepinephrine, dopamine, serotonin, anandamide, and oxytocin - the most addictive "reward" known to man. As my friend Steven Kotler says, "you'd be dead and drooling" if you those were externally introduced. But here in flow those chemicals are produced naturally, leading, as a by-product to the 10,000-hour commitment. Of course, I could be wrong - but thanks for letting me join the conversation - John K. Coyle
Sacrifice, commitment, responsibility, discernment, perspective. Also a long time reader. It all boils down to self. I'll defo apply his and your advice to my own circumstances.
If there is a really good book about that is "Peak: How All of Us Can Achieve Extraordinary Things" This guy is one of the most influential researchers in this area
@@IAmMarkManson Never knew you were on youtube. I'm subscribed to your mailing list. Why didn't you tell me you were on RU-vid? Or did I miss that mail? Anyway good stuff always great content from you. I read about this a long time ago and it holds true, the only problem is this is HARD earned knowledge. Most hard earned knowledge people take for granted when you give it away for free. Anyway great video, thought you were only funny in your writing, your videos are funny as well. Keep up the good work!!! Also I noticed in the past you stated you were going to work out, I see the results keep it up!!!
@@rohanyadav1089 I am a fan of his work, but I wouldn't say I am a fan boy. There are things I have disagreed with him in the past. But in this particular video, everything he says is backed up by prior data. This video didn't teach me anything I didn't already know, I just support the fact that he put all of this in one video. The concepts in this video took the people who originally studied them years to compile the data and they reproduced it several times over multiple generations. This is peer-reviewed research. For example the 10,000 hours is called deliberate practice, and the feedback he mentioned is a key part of it. That would be steps 2 and 3 that he mentioned in the video. What he leaves out in the video are the studies of grit and perseverance but maybe he felt it should be used in a different video.
That notion about editing being the 20 % that leverages how great the book is made me realize that you put huge effort in your video editing these days. Whoever does that for you: great job!
Its funny how its not required to be a genius to excel at something. You just have to work hard and listen to good advice! So true! Great content as always Mark!
Though as Ferris pointed out, you can get 'world class' at something in 3 months. That is - get the skill, not get the money, rewards, etc. Likely the 10000 hours is much more about relating (as opposed to mastery or 'greatness') than it's typically framed. Certainly aligns with the ancient wisdom.
you are the ONLY person I have watched who doesnt tell me to wake up at 5 in the morning and drink kale juice. I love how you look at things in a more different and practical perspective thank you so much !
Learning the fundamentals is what we often overlook. There are no shortcuts; we must establish first the skill we want to learn about before we can improve it. Thank you Mark for another insightful video.
I'm really pleased that you started a channel, Mark. This is way funnier and more direct than so many of the existing productivity/life channels out there.
Love it. I am very grateful for your books , e-mails, and this video. I feel that I learn a lot about science , history and philosophy with your thoughts but the most important I feel that I learn to live life without complicating myself. Thanks for existing and love from Ecuador.
Honestly though, most people don't know how to give feedback and how to take it. There are actually rules for both making the feedback interaction easier for both parties.
10000 hours, suffering for your passion. Overnight success is a ten year process. Dai kyo soku ke (big, dynamic, fast/smooth, light). Got to have a good foundation. I could go on. Peace.
Ten years layer: wrote my philosophy book that only my girlfriend and I bought, use its principles to maintain our relationship, bought 10 acres of land in the Philippines, and planning my avocado and mangosteen farm. Not what I expected but it's been fun. Let's see what the next 10 years will bring 🤔😂
I loved both of your books. After reading it I was able to challenge my unrealistic expectations from myself and was able to change my mindset about what’s important in life. Right now you are the only person on RU-vid and on LinkedIn who makes sense to me in present times when it comes to self help and personal development.
Just a side note about step #3, you need 10k hours to be a professional, an elite, the 1%ish (or something like that) you only need to apply the 80/20 principal and you will see you only need 2k hours to be efficient. When I learned about this principles, I apply it to learn new skills, and I now speak 3 languages, play several instruments, and I know 2 trade skills.
Hi Mark. Thanks for some truth. I'm a Counsellor with a MSc in Counselling and Psychotherapy. So what??? Exactly. That degree taught me shit... just a shit load of theories that I was expected to regurgitate with clients. The real breakthrough was when I actually started my private practice and started working with clients and listening to them. Your work is revolutionary. History shows that they laughed at Galileo, Edison, Tesla, Einstein, Musk, etc. The approach you take is hands on and solutions oriented. In my line of work, most clinicians either want to pump you full of psychotropic drugs, or keep you chained as a client for the next 10 years. I call bullshit on that one! Thanks for your love in producing the stuff you do. BTW, you're a kick ass researcher. At least when you do blog, you give references for your sources, which means you're not talking shit, or making it up as you go along. More power to you!. Thanks Mark and keep up the amazing work. Maybe one day you might come down to Australia.
Hey Mark! Your book 'Models' was so damn helpful for men :D Not just with woman, also for general life advise. I gave it to my cousin who had a terrible relationship and my roommate ( who is constantly on awful dates with dilemmas etc) ... and both of them love the book as much as I do. Thank you so much ! Love from Germany !
Honestly the best, most realistic and concrete thing i've ever watched until now, very down to earth. after watching about 5367193009 videos around this and trying to compare between they, this is such a good job.
Thanks Mark! Needed to hear that from someone. Tough love is required. Laziness and ego- fear is a bad loop and it takes away from being focused and sincere in my pursuits. Thanks for keeping it real!
My recent Facebook post on this video -Recently found Mark Manson in RU-vid. Although I was introduced to his book “The Subtle art...”, read a lot of reviews of his book in internet, didn’t know much about him. The concepts in the book were amazing. And then it happened, RU-vid recommended his videos and started watching this. Just because he uses the F word and S word, his speeches should not be ignored. He is one of the amazing thinkers that our world currently has. He is awesomely true.. you can literally trust what he speaks.. he doesn’t speak to please people on a topic (almost 90% of the people who speak are conscious how they present it and try to ensure they are liked by the audience).. Such people keep world go on.. and give meaning to life..
Most excellent dude! No such thing as overnight success - bloody hard work, grind and self belief, being realistic about your actual talent and stop whingeing helps too x
you're the person that really changed the way i see things in this wolrd mark, you;re the person that really taugh me how tis lives work, your book, your aticle really affected my live, mark, its really hard to explain the way i wanna say thanks to you,its really beyond just "thankyou" ,i dont know mark, its hard to explain, just thank you

mark wth! you're like a full time youtuber now dude this is great! models helped me out before @year 2016, really changed my life big time. I'm sorry I pirated your book, I didn't have any money back then, ill definitely pay you back by watching all your videos! right now I looked up some of your stuff again because I got a problem and I needed to refresh all the things you taught me! thanks for writing your book dude! Greetings from the Philippines!!!
The way you tweak up excellent advice with humor and a bit of criticism of the popular self-help business is amazing. Keep rocking the fucking boat with wit, humor, and practical wisdom, brother
It's crazy. I downloaded the Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fuck audiobook 4 years ago. Listened to the 1st chapter then stopped. Came across my sister reading the book a month ago and thought... "I have this on Audiobook, I should listen to it." Listened to it every day on my way into work and finished it. Then read "Everything is F*cked". Not as good as the Subtle art but still enjoyed it and finished it. Thought about other audiobooks I had but didn't finish. Resumed listening to this little known book called Models: Attract women through honesty. Really enjoyed it and then halfway through it was written by Mark. Currently on the last chapter. Keep in mind I haven't read a book fully in 13 years and haven't finished an audiobook in 6 years. Now I have almost finished 3 Mark Manson books in a month. Once finished Models, I'm definitely buying a physical copy.
I’ve been at a particular project for 7 years. I have come to the conclusion that either people don’t want the “product” or I’m shit at delivery. I looked outside and see that they want it from someone else so it’s my delivery (writing style) that sucks. At least now I know where I can improve. I look forward to being an overnight success after several thousand more hours.
I took your advice and spent the last 10 hours DEDICATING myself to the art of playwriting and getting feedback and - Wait 10 -T H O U S A N D- hours?... fuck that, I don’t even like theater that much.
It’s not like you’re repeating the same thing over and over again for 10,000 fucking hours. Each iteration has an outcome, which is usually some kind of small improvement or a lesson learned. The next time you do the thing, then, is not the same as the nine thousandth iteration, it’s the result of the outcome of that iteration. Iteration is pretty darn cool.
not me finally putting 1 and 1 together to realize you wrote the subtle art of not giving a f*ck! I'm ready for your vibes to illuminate my life!!! I immediately subbed.
Man I love you. If I ever run in you, I will force you to have a coffee with me! Thanks for your work, nice to having you around in this world, you figured some things out!
It's funny how Mark looks all formal and serious in the profile photo, but as soon as you play the video, it's The Mask levels of transformation. (The Mark, anyone?)
I believe it's a horrible idea to receive feedback from your friends and family members, because most of the time they're afraid of hurting your feelings by being too harsh( which is reasonable, yet harmful on the long run ). Thus, the best way is to confront them about this particular behaviour of theirs, or simply find someone else who's willing to be honest ( I don't recommend sadists tho haha ).
You don't. How can you focus on something that is out of your hands? If you look at your situation from all possible angles, you will surely find something to focus on within your reach.
Love your videos. please Make a Video on how to deal with criticism and how can u tell if the criticism is good or it’s because someone is jealous of u or does not like u for whatever reason and wants to put u down.
