Hey, im kinda late but um, i think that putting the shapes is where you would shade ur highlights and shadows: notice that there are shapes w darker hatching, some w lighter and some that doesnt have any hatching. Im also kinda studying that type of shading method to use on my watercolor pieces, and at the moment thats what i think the shapes are supposed to be

@@unitard9701 i recommend u to look up hatching portraits on youtube and see what they do with it, then look up like a reference photo: see where the shadows are and kind of zone them w shapes, then do the hatching inside those shapes depending on how dark or light the shadow is. Same thing with higlights, u also zone them w shapes but this time, no hatching is needed.

Oh and also, if ur going for a realistic portrait style, u uave to maoe the shapes depending on the feature of the face where ur putting it on, so for example, if ur gonna put a highlight on the cheek, u kinda want it to look like triangular (like in the thumbnail). So basically u gonna have to learn the planes of the face too, which if u want that, id recommend watching Angel Ganev on youtube aswell.

I'm also completely obsessed with Polina 😍 I really like her style of the empowering female& animal portraits. I also agree that I'd like to see some males here and there, but her art is so fulfilling, I almost feel embarrassed asking for more 😂x
