I really enjoy your curriculum series. I wish I was there live. Thank you so much Pror Lieu and Art Prof team for making academe-quality art knowledge accessible and free. Regarding drawing animals, James Gurney (living legend artist) describes himself as a self taught artist. He would visit the zoo a lot and draw animals from life. He would also go to the museum and draw the animal skeletons there. For me, I love drawing my pets, especially my dogs. 😊 I also enjoy drawing ArtProf’s free reference photos, especially your recent vid on quick gesture drawings on animals!
So much helpful advice in this video. I learned a couple new things I had not considered before and will work on applying them in the future. Thank you so much for sharing your insights!
This is great thank you. I've done Art GCSE, A level and I did a foundation diploma in Art and Design but my degree subject is non art related. I'm trying to launch a second career as an illustrator/surface pattern designer and what I sometimes do is check the curriculum and reading lists of related art degrees and buy the books they use second hand to work through at home.
In modern terms, illustration is what you are being paid to do for mass consumptions and fine arts is what you do for yourself for personali gratification and hope someone pay you for it. And that's why illustration will always be look upon as inferior to fine arts.
Absolutely! As long as you have the portfolio and can make connections with people in the illustration industry, it doesn't matter what your prior background was. -Prof Lieu
Also I totally agree about the importance of taking your own reference photos. I've stopped sharing photos on instagram I took of things that inspired me because three times now I've had other artists paint my photos without asking before I could paint them myself. One artist even asked for access to my workplace to draw the space there which horrified me because the space is special to me and I'm working on some illustrations incorporating it. I didnt like the grabby nature of these artists and wanted to tell them to find their own inspirations rather than try to steal mine.
