Self Watering Containers for Ferns: Maidenhair Fern and Heart Leaf Fern
Putting ferns in self watering containers was one of the best ideas I saw! In today’s video we are going to be repotting a heart leaf fern and talk about why self watering by wick watering, or bottom watering, with self watering containers is a great idea for fern care. If you are wondering how to grow ferns without them over drying, self watering containers for ferns could be your best bet! Self watering or bottom watering ferns has been the secret to my recent success with my maidenhair fern. Some other indoor plants can also work with self watering. Today I’ll cover maidenhair fern care, heart leaf fern care, and overall care for houseplants who are growing in selfwatering pots. Come along as I show you!

How are your ferns doing in these self watering pots now a year later? I just got a maidenhair and I have these pots in my Amazon cart waiting to hear back from you!

When I bought my maidenhair I immediately transferred it to a self-watering pot. That was 35 years ago. Still in the same pot. I do put it in fresh potting mix every few years and don’t think I could kill it if I tried.
@felicia8330
@felicia8330 2 года назад
Wouldn't it be root bound already ? Or is it ok to just let it be that way ?
@suespence8381
@suespence8381 2 года назад
@@felicia8330 Maidenhair s don’t mind being root bound. However when I change the potting mix I halve the plant if I think it is getting too crowded. I then put one half into a new self watering pot (same size) which I give away as a gift.

Many years ago, I had trouble keeping maidenhair ferns alive. Now, I have 6 of them and they're doing well. I keep them indoors next to a north-facing window. They are on a wick watering system. I make sure to check them regularly so that they never run out of water. I mist them occasionally.

You know if you "kill" a maiden hair you can revive it by cutting off all the dead leaves, watering and feeding it and leaving it in a light spot. In 2 weeks it will be back with beautiful fresh growth.

These pots are great and look neat. However you can achieve the same by simply wicking your plant pot to a water container below it, which allows for your choice of water reservoir size

Sled-watering pots have changed my entire “fern life” - many examples, but my crocodile fern is a wonder! Always an “insta-kill” for me in the past. The problem: my heart leaf fern was also doing beautifully in a self-watering pot (African Violet style - pot in pot) … until about a month ago. Suddenly, fronds/leaves are drying up & browning. Enough lost foliage that we’re near critical at this point. Fwiw, the soil is a mix of Coast of Maine organic potting mix, perlite, charcoal & orchid mix for drainage. I’ve treated with organic insect spray as well as neem oil topically, and as with most of my plants, it’s also treated with systemic granules for pest control (Bonide). The soil does seem wetter than usual at the moment, so I’ve pulled the inner pot from the reservoir and am giving it a chance to breathe, in case that helps. Any other ideas/suggestions, heart fern & self-watering pot pros out there? Thanks in advance
@Meskarune

Over time those clay pot in pot things stop working. The pours in the clay gets filled with minerals from the water and fertilizer and it stops wicking water.

I am so happy I found out about them. I have my rabbit foot fern, bird nest fern, grape ivy, oxalis, German ivy, multiflora hoya, nerve plant and Swedish ivy in self watering pots (the ceramic two piece type). I tell you, I was having a devil of a time with the Swedish ivy. It was loosing leaves, was always dry and crispy. Now it is lush and growing strong. It is now one of my favorite plants period. Am thinking about using them for my wandering jewel, zebrina. What do you think? I think I will let these reservoir dry out now that fall and winter are here though. Would you agree?🤔

I’ve had my maiden hair fern living for almost an entire year. Not as lush as when I purchased her but alive and happy. I’ve kept her inside a cash-po in the original she came with. I fill the cash-po with distilled water and keep it like that filled only about an inch in water. And when the water evaporates (usually like 3-4 days) I fill it up again. I have her on a west facing window-direct sunlight and she’s happy. Give it a try. I promise it’ll work. Just don’t let the water dry out

I use a self erring for my rabbit’s foot fern! I have killed a few and finally thought omg I can do hydroponics with cocopeat :) I used the same brand as you and they told me I could mix it with regular mixed soil if needed (since the cocopeat has no nutrients and if not added fertilizer the plant would die :/). It’s been amazing. I got the Blue at fern, and I’m gonna report it in semi hydroponic soon.
