Selfbow Building Basics - bow handle and riser

When building a selfbow from a natural bow stave split from a tree you’ll inevitably be dealing with the characteristics inherent in that stave. Figuring out how to bring a longbow or recurve to life from natural materials is one of the fascinating aspects of bow and arrow building.
One common bow building problems is working with a stave that might not be large enough or deep enough to build the kind of bow handle or riser that we want. These thin staves are an inevitable result of harvesting your own bow wood. Rather than dismissing them as only good for kids bows, or perhaps a bendy handle D bow design, let’s take a look at how to build up the riser section so we’ll have enough wood to work with.
In this video Clay Hayes shows how to build up the bow stave riser section by laminating another block of wood onto the stave. Clay uses a belt sander to flatten both the stave and extra wood, making sure that both surfaces are perfectly flat to ensure a thin glue line. If you don’t have a belt sander you could glue some 50 grit sandpaper to a board and use that to flatten the pieces.
To make it easier to flatten the riser section, some of the wood should be removed from the belly side of the limbs so the riser is above them. This will make more sense in the video. That way only the riser comes in contact with the sander which makes it easier to flatten. This method also works great for building up the riser for a stiff handle on a board bow.
Clay uses titebond 3 wood glue to glue up the riser on this bow. This is a very tough and water resistant wood glue.

Hey Clay. Just want to say thanks for the awesome content. I especially like the fact that you use mostly hand tools. Helps us guys that don’t have a shop full of equipment.

Ha! I just had one pop off during tillering about at 50#. I glue wood all the time and never had a failure but when it popped it exploded! I thought I just blew up the stave! Anyway do your prep, rough it up and clean it with acetone. It was my error of confidence that let me down! Do it right the first time. Great video series Clay. Im newbie and need all your help so thanks much for everything! Happy hunting!

How timely. I was working on my first blank yesterday (ash) and just about crapped myself when the riser area became fairly thin. This may save my bacon. Thanks!

What I great video. I am planning on building a selfbow and I can't get enough of your content. You have some great techniques and you explain things very well. Now for a question. I do want to build a recurve. From your description it looks like you bow at the widest point is about 1 5/8. I would like to know how thick your handle is at the widest point before you put the finish shape on it. I never understood how arrows bend push the tail right or left and how you correct flight with weight, length and flex. I know this topic wasn't covered in this video, but I though I would mention it. That was a great video. One I will have to watch again. I thought I was going to just buy or build arrows and add any tip. Boy was I wrong. Thanks for the insight.

I'm currently string tillering 2 red oak staves in my shop, I'm using this video as my instructional guide.. one silly question ..: when cutting your shelf, did you cut it in on the center line of the stave or slightly above the center line, it's not perfectly clear in the video, although it seems to be on the center line in the pdf plans.. sorry if this is a painful newbie question.. Thanks, :)

Great video clay.I do have a question that regards a glue on handle though.I steam bent and straightened a stave then glued a handle on just as you have shown.Now, it wasn’t until I started tillering and had it to brace height that I realized I bent it too far by about half an inch.I built a jig to to rebend it but my question is do you think the steam will pop the handle off if I used tite bond 3? I super glued the edges of the glue line to hopefully water proof it and I’ll probably try it before you get to this but I just wanted advice and to know if you have ever done something like this.I’m using black locust which to me is very stubborn for bending out twists and bows, hence why I over did it.

Iam specifically talking about bending tips in align with center of handle after the fact of glueing on a handle.

I think the heat would compromise the glue but I’ve never tried it.

I usually use a coping saw first then the chisel. Have a light black locust bow built in just that way. Good video. What's your favorite handle wood? I used black walnut on my first handle but now I favor whatever wood that the bow is made of. On a hand made bow I like it to look as if it is made all in one piece as much as possible. Hey, how about a video on gathering wild foods. Bet you know where the morel mushrooms are hiding and its wild onion and eggs time right now. I've been so busy I haven't had one chance to scout. I'm sure missing my wild onion and egg omelets this year.

Hey Clay what type of glue or epoxy to reattach a riser to my L.E Stemmler #45 model 1256. I really want to fix it, it's a great bow at a lower poundage for me to have fun with. My other longbow is 51lb at 28".

With a riser added to a board bow, does that now leave wood for a arrow shelf and strike plate to be added near the fades?
@clayhayeshunter
@clayhayeshunter 5 лет назад
You could cut a shelf into a board bow with an extra piece laminated to the riser.

The bow is flexing where it goes onto the handle. You have to make it thick enough there so there’s no flex at all.

I glued a handle onto a Osage stave and I got a little bend at the top fade where the handle fades into the belly. It is slightly lifting. My lines weren't as steep as yours, wondering if that is the cause?
