You know what the truth is , Damon was always a selfless person, you remember to what extent he went to save Katherine. After becoming a vampire too he was really a good person. He just pretend he don't care. But at the end he is most caring person. Everybody just hurts him so much. He had always been this way. When it comes to his friends , his love , happiness of his friends {I mean friends of friend}, he could do whatever it takes to save them!!!!!! And most imp. to make them happy!

I thought of it more as stefan was willing to respect her decisions and let her be her own person, even if it came with a little danger since he had no right to control her life

well him respecting her choice lead to her death and her becoming a vampire. Damon respects her choices too, just not the ones that will endanger her life! He respected her choice to be with Stefan even though he loved her, he stood by her no matter what, unlike Stefan who acted like a 5 year old when she chose Damon, acted like she was only supposed to he with him forever, like choosing damon meant something was wrong with her and she needed fixed! She loved Stefan, nobody ever denied that but she fell in love with Damon too, she didn't plan on it and she didn't want it but it happened and she shouldn't have to apologize for being in love and happy. She might've loved Stefan but she loved Damon 100000x more.

@@sarakennedy2633 to be fair, they thought at the time that she only thought she loved him because of the sire bond.....and him, along with her bffs, just wanted to make sure she wasn't being taken advantage of......and wouldn't you be upset if the your brother slept with and started a relationship with the love of your life right after you broke up? And stefan respecting her choice and her becoming a vampire were the only way delena would've happened.....I like delena but it was more toxic than I liked and wouldn't have lasted anyways if nina didn't leave early

Him snapping and killing people is more reasonable to me after watching tvd S7. This guy had a lot on his plate. Even when he's human. From traumatic childhood, teenage-hood, augustine. He had nobody when when he's going through all that and the people he held on to was Stefan and Katherine (before he knows she's a selfish, manipulative bitch). And both of them let him down. So honestly, I kinda understand why he was this jerk asshole. Cause if it is me, I would have acted the same way. Snapping around and doesn't care about the world, selfish, because he has been given crap and shit throughout his whole life. In real life, those situation numb your feelings. At one point you will break, tired and come to a final resolution that nothing matters anymore. So you only have yourself because you need to survive through all that. Mentally and physically. But he is not completely lost. He had built a genuine relationship with Elena, Alaric, Liz, and Bonnie. He may be so irritated and annoyed with Matt, put him through twisted situations, but in some way he did care about him. Both Stefan and Damon had let each down for many times. And yeah, I think people forget he chose to complete his transition as a vampire because of Stefan. That's like the most crucial point about his existence as a vampire.

That torturing part about Damon is in s7 when his mom Lily takes Elenas coffin I believe and yeah I agree with what you said. I think him sacrificing himself for Stefan giving up his future with Elena was his most selfless act. He wasted years of his life and bad deeds, living in misery, and he finally has an epic love after being led on for centuries and decides to give it up to save Stefan and Elena.

THE DIFFERENCES Damon wanted Elena to take the cure so she could ave a family and be happy he even wanted to take it with her. Stefan wanted her to take the cure so she love him again when she became a vampire he tried to fix her thinking of her as a broken toy even putting jeremeys like in danger. damon was the only one that fully accepted her when she turned. he loves her either way. damon loves elena for who she is not for what she is.

Yeah truee. Damon is the better man. I couldn't agree more But stefan does not that much get credit. As a Stefan fan like me, I don't hate Damon, I love him , and I get that he's misunderstood and stuff. And was selfless. But I don't think Stefan has been given credit for everything that he's done. And yes Stefan owes it to Damon and all. But Stefan sacrificed a lot too for Damon. Both of them have. For each other. And Stefan died for damon and Elena to be together. And once he only wanted Elena to be with him, but he realised that Damon is the better man and Elena changed Damon. And made a stronger bond between the brothers. Um didnt they make a deal? When Elena chooses someone, the other one would walk away so they would be happy? And Stefan was hurt but he knew that he practically drove Elena to it' and understood why she went with damon. And Stefan couldn't do nothing when it was his fault she was a vampire. Damon kept blaming him and he wanted to fix it so he tried to. And in season 5 he admitted he wanted damon to screw up but then stopped. And he supported damon and Elena together. When "elena" Kissed him in the motel, he said this is wrong you and damon just split. And he was selfless even when Elena didn't need him for example in season 7 when Elena was not there,he still saved damon? And then left cause he didn't want Caroline or Alaric and his kids get hurt. And in the end he sacrificed himself for damon and Elena. I'd say that was selfless
