Heat, friction and excessive stress are the motors killers. I've had Dodges, Duramaxes and Powerstrokes all blow up on me. It's always because of poor maintenance or abuse. There are just a handful of the 7.3's left in the market. It stands to reason that they have survived because they were cared for. That's why you see the 7.3 success stories. There are many thousands of the 6.4s still on the road.

Thank you so much for a legitimate straight forward video with some real knowledge. too many people out there do buy these trucks and try to use them as race cars. not to mention they do not have the budget or concern to care and maintain the vehicle properly. I've been considering buying a 6.4l to use for towing a 25 foot camper. no serious load but I do want to be able to haul a bigger load. so many naysayers out there. why don't they just say I bought a beat up vehicle and beat it to death more.

Thanks for the video, Tom. I have a 2008 F450 with a big Lance camper. I installed a remote coolant filter, remote oil filter and have a remote fuel filter, but am afraid to cut a fuel line. I will see if my diesel mechanic will do it. I had the DPF and EGR deletes done and a spartan dash daq installed. I installed the 210 tune. Truck runs really well and tows well. I was glad to hear you say the 6.4 will go 500K miles. I have been really nervous after hearing so many sad stories. I am 76, can't afford another truck.
@SELKCOMM

Your truck has two fuel filters. They work very well if they're changed every 10K miles and you check your fuel quality once a month. Your truck must scream with those mods. If you go to the powerstrokehelp youtube site you'll find a couple of good videos about coolant and how to maintain your cooling system.

Spot on. I have a 2010 and have always taken good care of it. Oil, oil and fuel filters every 3-5k miles with only motorcraft products. Did the deletes and tunes at 50k. Big difference in attitude but still baby it except for a once in awhile fun moment or just need to throttle it because... Only thing I’ve done is front calipers, flushed the brake fluid and changed the lower engine to radiator hose. Runs like a champ. I’m hoping to get 250k + out of it.

I just use the green powder to shine clean the cooler. Truck ran happier w about 17 mpg, 3 mpg better than before. And it passed the ca smog test. It came w a tuner, truck was broken in last year and tuner got stolen. I think ca won’t allow for pdf delete. The truck was originally from Arizona.

YES! 1 hr for 30 miles. It will end up being your average speed if you calculate it out. Brings you to about 150 hrs for every service, which is "normal" for most engines. 90-200 hrs is what I see on equipment for required service interval.

"if properly maintained" is the key statement here. I'd say 80% of all powerstroke owners don't do this. So in my opinion, the quality of the engine is based off how long it can last without being maintained because 8/10 it will not be.

Driven all over Portland metro area and all surrounding cities. EVERY ONE OF THEM HAVE BEEN GREAT TRUCKS AND PROPERLY MAINTAINED FROM BEGINNING TO NOW. Great video. Appreciate the confirmation on how to take care of these trucks. I have a 2010 F250 PSD. I purchased it with 72k miles on it and it now has 103k miles. Was able to go through the entire service record with the service director. It had never had any issues. I deleted the DPF soon after and am running the mildest tune possible (Torque Technologies T1 tuner: Mild Tune 80hp) that deletes the DPF and disables the EGR coolers. I still need to take the EGR coolers out. Does the cat eventually clog as well? I might as well and straight pipe that too. I run the Archoil fuel and oil additives and follow the severe duty maintenance schedule. Motorcraft oil filters/oil every 5k and Motorcraft fuel filters every 10k. Haven't had any issues. I tend to drive it like an 18 wheeler as well...no fast takeoffs...no rolling coal on purpose...etc. I hope it doesn't give me any issues. It kind of scares me because working on these costs so much. Thanks again.

I've never had a problem with the catalytic converters. But I suppose there's always a first time. It sounds to me like you are doing everything possible to make this truck run a long time. I don't do exotic stuff to these trucks but I love hearing from customers that do and hear the results they get. I am not a mechanic. I am a wrench turner at best. I send all of these trucks to my shop and they go through them bumper to bumper to make sure they are good machines. I do the final quality control. All of my opinions are based on real life experience and having bought, reconditioned and sold hundreds of these trucks. I'm always learning though and I love hearing from customers. @SELKCOMM 6 лет назад
Sorry for not replying sooner. Check the engine hours. The ratio should be somewhere around one hour per thirty miles. Maintenance is everything on these trucks so its important to have it checked out for known issues. If the truck has been maintained it will last a long time. Also, do a coolant flush right away. That's the service that most people ignore. And use the proper coolant.

I plan on driving it a few days a week and hauling and towing when I need to. Also do I need to worry about deleting the egr and dpf systems right away or could I leave it alone until they develop problems or is it too late then? Just curious thanks in advance.
@SELKCOMM
@SELKCOMM 6 лет назад
The 30 miles per engine hour is a rule of thumb. Close counts. You don't need to worry about the DPF and EGR but you need to at the very least do a DPF delete and get a simple tuner at some point. The regen process will eventually kill your engine. I personally have never had a problem with the EGR system but I know it's a known problem. You also should do a coolant system flush with the recommended coolant and chemicals. The oil coolers on all of the diesel engines have a tendency to fail if you don't do scheduled maintenance.

I get what your saying and everything BUT it doesn’t matter how you take care of an engine, if it’s reliable than it’s reliable. The same amount people who thrashed 7.3s and 6.7s also thrashed 6.4s. But both the 7.3 and 6.7 are miles ahead of the 6.4. It’s not a coincidence lol 😂 sure take care of it it’ll last, but that goes for any engine ever!!!
@SELKCOMM
@SELKCOMM 3 года назад
Funny you should mention the 7.3. I worked for Ford for many years. I was there when they introduced the 6.9. They were a disaster and source of many lawsuits. I was there when the 7.3 was introduced in the early 90s and the first iterations were awful. By 2002 close to two million 7.3s were produced and the last three years of production are the ones you see on the road because the engineers had finally worked all the bugs out. They had almost ten years to address the points of failure and adapt. Also, it stands to reason that the 7.3s that are still on the road are the ones that have been meticulously maintained. The 6.0s and 6.4s have design flaws that can be easily overcome. The 6.7 is a good motor. It’s been in production for ten years. That’s a long run for a platform. A new 6.7 4X4 F250 Supercab XL runs over $60,000.

Tristin Sundquist The DPF is easy to swap out. Just keep it available for your inspections. I’ve personally never had an issue with EGR. As long as it’s in good operating condition I’d leave it alone. Do a coolant flush and use the recommended ford coolant. VERY IMPORTANT. Look for crankcase blow by at operating temperature and engine codes. POO88 generally indicates a fuel pressure control valve issue. That's will require a high pressure fuel pump. It's expensive. I just listed a 2009 F-550 diesel 4X4 with 67K miles on eBay. It's a cab and chassis long frame.

SHINEYLOE'Z CERTIFIED TOWING sunny although they are a good truck. The 6.4 was designed as a throw away motor. Your gonna spend a lot of money to repair or replace that motor. I recently traded my 6.4 in because of the $$$ to repair it.
@1curt12
@1curt12 6 лет назад
Brandon Hoover it’s not so much the pistons. Or the pushrods or rockers or the cavitation in the water pump. It’s the combination of it all. If anyone was smart and deleted these right off the hop maybe will have a good one that will reach some serious high mileage. But most have had the excess heat damage and stress it creates. As well as the shortfalls in design. You wonder why it was discontinued after a few years in the ford lineups.

Check for DTCs and I’m assuming the check engine light is on. If it displays a code for a fuel rail pressure sensor it is most likely the high pressure fuel pump and it needs to be replaced. It’s not an easy fix. Take it to a mechanic you trust and have him do the diagnostics.

Gary Morris It’s funny. The DPF actually produces more pollution and particulates that it was supposed to stop. They all clog up at some point. The regen process destroys the motor and they consume way more fuel. Seems like Ford is trying to look green. Nothing could be further from the truth.

How to buy a good 6.4 Powerstroke? It's easy, just buy a Cummins or a 7.3
@SELKCOMM
@SELKCOMM 5 лет назад
NintendoLord85 Funny. I have a few 7.3s in stock right now. They are bullet proof. I agree. But my favorite motor is the 6.0 if set up properly. Followed closely by the 6.4. NOTHING outruns a 6.4 if it’s set up right. And I’ve sold hundreds of them. The Cummins is a great motor if you don’t mind replacing turbos every now and then.

@christiandestefano7867

it dosent really matter how much you take care of a 6.4 you will have to be ready to pull the heads and freshen up the fuel system anytime after 200k. Navistar used metal on metal type valve guides on the 6.4 heads to save money and they basically get worn out no matter how much preventive maintenance you do on these trucks.
