Great videos as always , just an FYI as I looked into that hole on top reason and here is the explanation directly from District Photo - 'There is a hole in the mug packaging and it is an air hole that prevents suction. Otherwise, it would not be possible to pull the package apart and take the mug out.'
@PODinsights

Thank you for sharing! That makes sense (although perhaps the hole could be a tad smaller). Glad to know there is a reason for it!

Very good video Jeff. Thank you for the info. So, i started my own t-shirt and mug business with Printify and Etsy on February 4th, and i used District Photo for my print provider for mugs. I just received my sample mug from District Photo. It was in styrofoam, with a hole at the bottom side of the mug and the mug was firmly put inside. It wasn't loose like the one you have. Maybe they changed that and that's a good sign. Now to the bad things, which totally let me down, and i don't know what to do. The mug is a mess. It doesn't even look as good as yours. The designs are off-centered, which on the contrary i put them at the very center on Printify, the design was VERY blurry and low res, while on Printify it was at 300 dpi, which supposedly is high res, AND even though i had a transparent background, they put a background, with a washed out black. Which on my totally black mug, looks very ugly. Also, i can see the borders of the recangular design area around, which isn't supposed to happen. So now, i have absolutely no money left to start making changes and start ordering samples for every change i make till i know my mugs are perfect. The only money i have, is barely enough for Printify to draw in case there is an order from a customer. Also, even if i had, this mug took 19 days to arrive from the day i ordered it. If i did that for every change i make, it could take a LONG time till i have the perfect quallity. And time is crucial, because at any given moment, i may have my first order from a customer, who with a quality like this, is sure to return the product and give me a negative review, which i definitely don't want. So i'd really like some advice from you here, Jeff. You're doing this for a long time and you have experience in this. Should i change my provider? Like, maybe choose MyLocker? Reupload all my designs at much higher dpi? The problems on the mug are too many, and i can't decide if it's the provider's fault, or that's the highest quality a print on demand product can be, so no matter what provider i choose, the result may still be the same.

When using the overhead camera, can you hold the items in place longer? I felt like the overhead view was too short and I didn't get a chance to see the products properly. Other than that this video was so helpful. You're really good at explaining everything and keeping the video interesting.

This was the first video I've done with a second camera angle in a live shot and I want to keep getting better! I'm also thinking for the next review video I might try using closeup shots that I film separately instead of doing the handheld closeup during the recording. I really appreciate your feedback!

Thank you for this informative video. I have done the math for profit on mugs made with printify and don't see how I can make a profit with the price they are charging for the mug and the shipping cost topped off with Etsy's fees. Much of the competition i see on etsy is selling at an average of 12.99. At $12.99 I would make close to $0. Pleae help me to undestand...

(another great vid on your part!) Thank you, looking forward to more.

If you add the Offsite ads rate ad then your profit margin will be a lot less
@PODinsights
@PODinsights Год назад
Hi! It's important to check the offsite ad profit to make sure you won't lose money or have extremely low profit for sales from offsite ads, however personally for me they are a very low percentage of my sales, so I don't inflate my prices. In 2021 offsite ads accounted for about 8% of my total sales and in 2022 it actually dropped to about 5%.

Hi! I actually messaged Printify about this, because I thought the same thing but I still have mugs from MyLocker in my existing products and they still show as "in stock". Printify support said that they were experiencing a quality issue with that product for MyLocker so they temporarily hid the product from the catalog until the issue is resolved. But orders will still be fulfilled if you have existing products with them in the meantime.

Great video! I'm half stupid because I was trying to use one picture on my mugs, and stretching it out to try and make it fit .Looks so much better with two! hahaha Do you offer returns on your mugs? I currently don't accept returns on Etsy, but I feel like it's hurting any possible sales. Thanks!!
@PODinsights
@PODinsights 2 года назад
Thanks! I don't accept returns but I do add a note in my listing images and description to let customers know that I will replace any mug that arrives broken or defective and they should contact me if they have any issues. This way I generally only get contacted about something when it would qualify for a free reprint from the print provider. If you do accept returns, you will have to take a mug back even if there's nothing wrong with it, meaning you can't get a refund or replacement from your print provider (and you likely will be paying the return shipping). I think as long as customers know they can get a replacement if it arrives broken, that would be their main concern. I hope that helps!

where can I get a good mockup that would feature a particular mug I want to sell? Printify's mockups aren't very good looking. I hope to avoid placeit subscription Thank you
@PODinsights
@PODinsights Год назад
Hi! Free options for mug mockups are a little more limited than apparel ones, but Placeit does rotate free mockup templates. They usually have at least a few mug options in there - even if there isn't one you like right now, it's worth checking once per month to see if there are any you like. Here's the landing page that shows all the free mockup templates: 1.envato.market/9W0rJ5 Smartmockups also has some free templates for mugs as well: smartmockups.com/mockups/mugs?filter=free Another option would be to buy a couple individual templates and just keep reusing them vs. paying for a subscription. Creative Market is a good source to check out, they have lots of mockup templates and most are PSD files that you can use with Photoshop, Photopea, Affinity, etc. creativemarket.com/search/mug-mockup PS: If you do like Placeit's mockups, they usually do a Black Friday deal and you can lock in a lower price for as long as you keep it, just wanted to mention in case you want to keep an eye out for that!

What's the best website to sell mugs only?
@dominantgaming6838
@dominantgaming6838 Год назад
Hey there! I am quite new and just starting to sell mugs on etsy. In your profit margin calculations you did not include VAT from buying and fullfilling from Printify. Why is that can i ask? Because as of now I pay VAT on every order from Printful which is 20% and it cuts into my profit margins alot. Again im quite new to this so any insight would be extremely helpful!
@PODinsights
@PODinsights Год назад
Hi! Printify will only charge VAT when they are required to, and it depends on where you are located and the country that you are making sales in. For example, I am charged VAT by Printify when I make a sale in the UK because I'm located in the US and I do not have a tax exemption for the UK. Over 90% of my sales come from the US and I do not pay sales tax on those orders because I have sales tax exemptions filed for all states in the US. Since only a small number of my orders come from countries where I am charged VAT, I just add a little bit extra to my shipping charges for those countries to cover it. If you are selling in a country where you do not qualify for a tax exemption, then you would need to factor that into your product and/or shipping prices to cover the additional cost. Great question!

Hey man, i have a question. After i set up the profit in Printfy, lets say for an example i design a product bag and the retail price in printfy shown as 21dollar however in Etsy they sell my product for 6dollar. I am confused. How much i will earn from this?
@PODinsights
@PODinsights 2 года назад
Hi! You control the price of your listings in your Etsy account. You set the initial price of your product when you create the listing in your Printify account, but then once it is published to your Etsy account you can edit the listing from there including the price. Printify will only charge for the cost to fulfill orders, your Printify account does not receive any of the funds from your sales on Etsy, so you have to calculate what your revenue will be minus Etsy fees, and then subtract the cost to fulfill the order with Printify calculate what the final profit is. There are calculators available to make it easier for you to figure out what your profit for an item will be - here is one that I use all the time: www.alura.io/resources/etsy-fee-calculator just enter the price you want to charge (including shipping) and the total cost, and it will tell you what the profit will be. I hope that helps!

Hi! Yes, you certainly can sell mugs with your own original photographs or artwork as the the design. There are no restrictions on selling original works. I actually sell some designs on mugs that were photos I took at national parks. I think the only thing that would have any restrictions would be if your photos feature recognizable people, then you would probably need a release from them. But if your photos are landscapes, etc. then you can use them in any design. If you add text into the design, you just need to stay away from trademarked words/phrases and it's a very quick & easy search (for the US anyway - it can be a little more complicated in other countries tmsearch.uspto.gov/bin/gate.exe?f=searchss&state=4804:k8prvu.1.1). There is a lot you can do with your own original photos on Etsy in addition to mugs too! You can do print on demand posters, canvas, or other types of print items and Printify has those in their catalog too!

Hi! That is correct, you pay for each individual order on Printify and each item is made to order. There is no inventory of finished products to manage or pay for. You receive the revenue from your orders through the marketplace or website that you sell on (Etsy, Shopify, etc.) and you pay the order fulfillment cost to Printify. Can i trust the "Preview"? I put my design larger than the inner-1st-doted line and very close to the 2rd doted line, and i try to keep the design not touching the solid black line, and when i look at the Preview, its perfect layout, like nothing is being cut into half. But when u say its not guarantee... i do like the design that stop at the 2rd doted like
@PODinsights
@PODinsights 2 года назад
The preview shows you what it will look like if the print comes out perfectly lined up in the maximum printable area. But, they call that smaller area the "safe zone" for a reason unfortunately. Generally, you can trust the preview when it comes to alignment but I have seen examples from my customers where the top or bottom is cut off slightly when I have pushed designs all the way out to the max bleed line. If you're a little bit over the safe area line it should be getting printed, but if you expand it all the way to the maximum bleed border, there's a chance a little bit on top or bottom will get cut off. This actually gave me an idea for a video - I'm going to put a grid pattern design on a mug that goes all the way out to the full bleed area and order a sample to see where it gets cut off. I think it will be interesting so thank you for asking about this!

Love your informative videos. I’m a newbie and learning so much about POD from all your videos. My question is: If a customer purchased 2 or more mugs how do you set up that type of Etsy shipping profile? Thanks.
@PODinsights
@PODinsights Год назад
Thanks! In your shipping profile for mugs, customers will pay the "additional item" price for each mug they buy after the first one. So if your mug shipping price is $4 for the first item and then $2 for each additional item, a customer who buys 3 mugs in the same order would pay a total of $8 for shipping. You set the additional item price in the shipping profile just to the right of your first item price. I hope that helps!

Hi! I use Quickbooks self-employed to track etsy transactions and fulfillment costs because etsy has an integration with Quickbooks so I don't have to manually import any of the transaction data. Generally speaking, in the past two years I don't think the revenue reported on my Etsy 1099 exactly matched what was captured by quickbooks, but it was pretty close. I ended up using the number from the 1099 when I filed my taxes because it was slightly higher and I figured that's what Etsy reported so it would be safer to use that. Sorry I couldn't be more help, I just don't use the CSV files from Etsy so I'm not sure what might be included there that is different than what they pull into the 1099. I definitely recommend asking an accountant!

Question? on printify what are the best companies with the best quality mugs to buy from?

Hi! In my experience District Photo is a great balance of quality and price. I've also used MyLocker and have not had any significant print quality issues with them, but I have had them make a few order mistakes in the past (wrong item was sent). Spoke Custom Products also makes a quality mug, but I don't use them personally unless District Photo is out of stock because their price is a bit higher. I hope that helps!

Hello :), I'm starting selling mugs (using my wall art designs), but I have a challenge with provider inside printify. I'd like to choose District Photo as it's so popular and has good prices, but they are currently rated 7,7. Do you suggest to choose them anyway or look for other provider?
@PODinsights
@PODinsights Год назад
Hi! Recently Printify changed their quality scoring system, so scores might seem a little different than they did previously. They sent an email and this is a direct quote from it: "You may see some larger-than-normal changes in the scores of the Print Providers you’re using. If so, there’s no need to worry. It's just us updating the system. If you’re happy with our products, there’s no need to take any action. However, if a Print Provider doesn't meet your expectations, please consider switching to another one." If you hover over the score, it will pop-up and show you the 3 score components separately. It looks like District Photo's score is being impacted a bit by both the quality and production time components. The score is updated every week and takes into consideration the last 4 weeks. One thing I'm not sure about is whether the quality component is impacted by reprints that are needed because of a mug arriving broken or damaged, which is not the same thing as having print quality issues. Ultimately, I still use District Photo and I haven't had any customer complaints on mug orders in the last few weeks, so I'm not too concerned about their score dipping a little bit. That could change of course, but for now I don't have any specific reason to avoid them. I hope that helps!

Do you find that the center lines on the design page in Printify are off a little? I am making mugs and when I center the design over the broken dotted lines that should be the center of each side, it always looks like the one on the left side is off to the right too far when I check the preview. Any thoughts?
@PODinsights
@PODinsights 2 года назад
Someone else pointed out in the comments on my mug design video that some providers put the center lines in their template at the point where the mug handle is centered between the two graphics, which is not the same thing as the center of the side of the mug. So I believe that is what's going on. I've also noticed that the left side seems to be a tad different than the right. The best thing to do I think is to center it using the mockups as a guide and maybe order one sample to double check - a symmetrical square graphic should make it pretty clear. If you use Photoshop or another tool that allows you to add guide lines you can also get it adjusted the way you think it looks best and then save your own template with guides placed where it will come out centered on each side.

Very informative thank you! Wondered if you could answer a question? Im trying to upload an enamel mug design that wraps the whole mug. I followed the Printify upload dimensions and dpi but when I zoom in on the mockup on printify it looks pixelated. Does that mean the final product will be pixelated, or is that just because I zoomed in so far? Image is created in photoshop. Should I make the file size larger and scale down for printify? I don't want to start sending out pixelated cups 😑 Thanks for your time!
@PODinsights
@PODinsights Год назад
Hi! The mockup images that Printify provides are not very high resolution so if you zoom in on them they are going to pixelate for sure. The best quality ones that you can manually download are on the "Preview" page in the design editor. But the relatively low-res mockup photos are not an indication that the print quality will be poor. When you are in the design editor on the "Edit" page, you should see a quality indicator on the right side of the screen where the image file information is. As long as you see a value there that is greater than 300DPI (or just "Vector" if you uploaded an SVG file) your print should come out looking fine. If the DPI is showing under 300, you may want to export your print file in a larger size and scale it down on the product.

Hi! You set your pricing on Etsy including the shipping charge for customers. Etsy pays out the revenue from your sales directly to you, and you have to pay Printify for the order fulfillment. The cost of order fulfillment includes the price of the product and shipping.

My question is on payment system. Let's say I put my card on printify and now I have 50 orders for a few mugs in my line up. I would get charged and how many days would I wait for the sales to reflect? Shouldn't I be concerned of that aspect? Would a person need at least $1000 in a account to justify waiting for the sales to reflect?
@PODinsights
@PODinsights 2 года назад
Hi! Printify is just a fulfillment platform, the revenue from your orders does not flow through them. You get the payout from Etsy based on a cadence that you've set in your account (mine is every week) and then use those funds to pay your credit card bill from the order fulfillment cost. For example, I only pay my credit card once per month, so by the time my statement is due I've received on average 4 weeks of payouts from my Etsy account. If you plan to use a debit card rather than a credit card, you would need to have some funds in the account to withdraw for order costs until the account is replenished by Etsy, but with a credit card you don't need to start with anything up-front. I have a video about this cash flow process for print on demand selling on Etsy if you'd like a more visual explanation: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6uBd3OSslZE.html. @@PODinsights okay I just watched your other video. Sorry, im so new to this and just want to do it right. Do you make a supportive income off of just print on demand with etsy or do you partake in many avenues to create a income flow? Just thinking if one shop can produce results or would I need multiple shops. I looked at many businesses but found this might be the best route. Have you tried other business ideas and decided on this as the better choice?
@PODinsights
@PODinsights 2 года назад
@@melodym7045 Don't apologize, there is a lot to learn! I personally have a 9-5 job in addition to selling on Etsy as the income that my shop generates wouldn't replace my salary (at least not yet) but there definitely are sellers who have scaled their business to be their main income source. I do recommend multiple income streams if you're looking to build a consistent net monthly income - they can be related or unrelated depending on your interests & goals. Related but separate income streams would be like running an Etsy shop (or multiple) in addition to uploading your designs to Amazon Merch On Demand (formerly Merch by Amazon), Redbubble, Teepublic, etc. I have many of my designs on those other marketplaces because they are free to join and the maintenance after uploading is very minimal (no customer service, no expense management, just collect royalties from sales). The income from them is not as much as my Etsy shop, at least for me, but it's still a supplement. If you are new to the whole print on demand process, I'd recommend starting with one Etsy shop and then consider expanding if you have ideas for additional shops once you get comfortable with workflows and customer service, etc. because running multiple shops while also trying to learn quickly could get to be overwhelming. As far as unrelated/other business ideas, there definitely are other possibilities out there, even RU-vid has some great opportunities. But for me, between my 9-5 job, my Etsy shop, this RU-vid channel and the podcast, my days are pretty stretched. None of them will make you thousands per month after a very short amount of time invested - they all take work and time to build up. So I think the question is, which venture will you enjoy the most? If you enjoy creating designs and offering them on products, learning about marketing & e-commerce, print on demand is a great opportunity. If you are considering different print on demand Etsy shop strategies, I did an episode of the podcast on that topic (there's a written article too if you'd prefer): podinsights.net/?p=279

My idea is to create one store front, start working on art again to create designs for products but also was thinking of the NFT market place as a extra avenue. I do want to create a RU-vid channel but want to try something unique. I'm writing down a business plan for that. I have a vision but need to put it all down. I'm also thinking of working on side jobs as a freelance writer. With all of these ideas, it should keep me busy and generate more profit. I'll keep you in the loop once these are developed. Was your profit margin net or gross?
@PODinsights
@PODinsights Год назад
Hi! Profit margin that I mentioned was just for revenue minus selling fees and order fulfillment cost, so overhead still has to be removed from that to get final net profit. Thankfully with print on demand in general overhead is very low but if you pay for things like graphic design software, keyword research tools, or printify premium, that would still have to be subtracted at the end of the year to determine final net profit. It should ultimately have a very low impact on a per order basis, at least that's the goal.

@PODinsights
@PODinsights 2 года назад
Hi! I've had experience using both, and in terms of print quality I'd have to give the edge to MyLocker. The ratio of print quality errors with District Photo is a little bit higher (coming out blurry or misaligned) but it's not to the point where I personally will stop using them because the profit margin with their pricing is really nice and it's quite easy to get reprints. Using MyLocker I had a little bit less of those issues come up, however it's not like I had no issues at all. I did have a print quality issue here and there, and they sent the wrong product to my customer 2-3 times where it was just somebody else's order which was a little embarrassing. So ultimately the lower price/higher profit with DP won me over even though they have a slightly higher rate of print issues. If I made them sound bad - neither one caused consistent issues. I can go a full month without having an issue and then suddenly get a couple in a row, it's not like they are making mistakes left and right every month. If MyLocker made a mistake on 1 out of 50 orders, DP makes a mistake on maybe 2-3 in my experience. I hope that helps!
