great example on how some people need to put their lives in order before venturing into a hobby.....get your financial health in order!

I retired from collecting comics for the most part! I don't haunt conventions anymore-- if my LCS doesn't have it, TOUGH!

Thanks for sharing Dave. I think as collectors we all have been in Kyle's shoes on some sort of level. Comics can be an addiction, because there is so much to love. I know there have been times where I bought a collection or a grail and couldn't say no because the price was too good, and I paid the price by eating ramen noodles for awhile. So I know the feeling on some sort of level. I also feel that ambitious collectors have more pressure in this day in age because of internet. You have ebay auctions and comic stores online etc... But another thing collectors need to be aware of is our awesome Comic Book Community. I'm fairly new to the RU-vid community, but I remember watching my first videos of people's collections such as The Doom, JJforeal2, Alex the Comic Hoarder, etc.. My heart and brain where fast at work, I made lists of all these comics they were talking about so I could go hunt them as well. After I made the list I would start hunting but then I would be like ...why am I hunting this book?? So I found my self scratching out books on the list that I didn't really need or want. You just have to be careful and budget for this hobby, and learn the tricks and trades from this great community we have here. So thank you for making this video and helping out Kyle as much as you could.See ya in the next vid. Dave

Pope Grimey : Thanks Pope, life throws hard lessons at all of us, hopefully Kyle is in good financial shape now. I used to love Ramen Noodles in college, haven’t had a taste for them since, you make a very good point. Desire & Envy have always been around and probably alway will be, they’re good things to get control over. I appreciate your thoughts on this one, thanks for sharing. Silver

@@silver-ageddave2849 I think that old adage may apply here "Moderation in all things". Enjoy collecting, just try not and do it within your means.

Watched this video first thing this morning. I feel bad for eager new collectors that go into debt or dig into savings buying comic books. It never really ends well and often times have to end up selling. As Dave Ramsey would say, “spend your wage.” Know what you can afford after you take care of your priorities. Best thing about this video is you supported him when he was down. Jesus never slaps us in the face when we ask him to forgive us of our sins. He accepts us with arms wide open.

Alex the Comic Hoarder : A wise Priest once told me, “God will never allow his generosity to be outdone”. I’ve found that to be an absolute truth in my life so I try to help everyone. Every 16yr old boy want a sports car, a comic collection can simply be another form of obsession so yes, it’s sometimes a hard life lesson to learn, some people get it right away and some never get it. (That’s why God gives us the power of Prayer & Good deeds). Thanks for watching Alex, I appreciate it. Dave

Hell of a collection for a year or so. Over spending is easily done. I really try to rein it in but it is hard. Almost like an addiction. It brings me comfort though as I suffer with anxiety. Nothing better I have found as crazy as it sounds. Great words of wisdom Dave...

Darrell Norris: Thanks Darrell for watching and for reaching out, I have been there myself! There are a lot of creature comforts comics provide me and really, there are a lot worse things we could be doing right? Having the controls in place is always the key, but I’m certainly not perfect when it comes to following my own rules lol. Thanks again Darrell for sharing your thoughts! Silver

Really liked the video. Thanks for sharing. I am fairly new to the whole RU-vid community and have been watching a lot of videos but have never commented. This really struck a cord with me, I have been collecting since I was a kid but never really could afford much, so I can relate to Kyle and his situation. It was very nice of you to help him out. Some might have taken advantage of his situation and went down on the price. Once again I think you gave some really good advice and thanks for taking the time. I have been really enjoying your videos and seeing some of the different and unusual comics you collect.

It is a shame when comics lead to someone’s grief... your advice is right on point as we can’t let our desires override our needs. There are some nice comics in there too. BTW, check the Uncanny X-Men 302 in the far right box just in case it is the rare no price error variant. Thanks for sharing the wisdom!

Metarog : I will check that 302! I guess desire and envy have and always will be around, I guess Eve and the apple tells the whole story. I would guess comics were just his object at the time, usually the root lies a bit deeper. Thanks Roger. Silver

That Star trek with the Enterprise on the cover from the last box was very cool. Hard story to hear. I would hate to go broke collecting but I would hate worse to lose my family over an obsession. I agree that before collecting you should have financial stability and I would also add that you need a support network and accountability partners. My wife is great at giving me that look (you know the one) right when I need it. Great video. Thank you for making it, I know it had to be tough.

Always kept to a budget. Even when my LCS always went to was going thru it's final days. I forgot about his big sale going on and could have got a chunk of books really wanted. Trades but probably be caught up on a book than I am now. 95% off was final deal had going for a certain price point on items that weren't new books. Today still do. I went broke on a freecomicbookday last year and wasn't expecting that. Know came close when started as me and my Dad were collecting then and he really got caught up in the variant mess. I forgot how many copies of Harris Comics Vamperilla #1-3 he bought.

J. Lee : every time I walk in a LCS I need to focus on my goals or I walk out saying,”what just happened “ lol. 95% off is incredible, no one could walk outta there empty handed!, too funny on Vamp, I bought a collection just before Christmas that was loaded with that type of Harris/Chaos kind of stuff, those 3 Vamps were in there. Thanks J Lee for watching. Silver

BATAVENGER : you know, i just told Don the Comic Junkie there was a nice silver lining to the story, the average comic condition is excellent and I really paid a lot less than I spend monthly on New Marvel comics. (Which mostly disappoint me). So, hopefully it was a good learning lesson for him and the books get to be where they are most appreciated! Hey! I have a quick question. So my uncle passed some of his comic books down to me and I want to say that there is like 150 or more, and I don’t know if I should bag and board every single one of them, they aren’t rare or anything, they are recents so I don’t know if I should bag and board them or just put them straight in the comic storage box. What would you do?
@silver-ageddave2849
@silver-ageddave2849 2 года назад
It depends on your plan. If they’re sentimental the bag & board them and store them properly, I have my coverless childhood comics bagged & boarded because they are special to me. If you don’t have a plan then boxed correctly will protect them enough imho & they’ll be easier to read. The most damaged comics were probably his favorites to read so be sure to read those. If you ever want to sell them then find a family member or a guy like me who will love them vs just a dealer. Thanks for watching, be awesome! Silver

Cool another comic book Dave. With that great guy. What you spent the rent money on comics? Old Freak Bros quote from Rip Off Press. There was a time i spent 200 dollars a month on comics because i liked them so much. I skipped rent almost one month buying comics i made up for it tho after getting paid from my job. last time i ever did that. I have always collected comics the collection you showed is a lot like stuff i collected. Love those 25 cent cover price books my heart pounds for them. I feel the 80's and 90's brought a downfall to comics. I was into it all even magazine size comics monsters Heavy Metal all that Epic illustrated Creepy stuff like that a comic book store closed down and i got tons of comics and great ones cheap. kind of got me out of buying anymore i paid around 400 dollars for a collection worth a bit more then 100,000 if i was to buy by store price and price guide that was a good year. I still have all my comics from the past to now.I went digital and got tons of comics and magazines on disk i love reading them on the laptop offline i own them there is no losing them. I bought disk collections and started doing it myself lots of old horror and science fiction comics. I have so much now just put in a disk last night.

But I still owe half a grand or a little more and next month I can only afford to give them two hundred. I'm on disability so money is limited. TRADE PAPERBACKS will save your life!! "Floppies" are great but unless you do your homework or actually like to read what you collect you're gonna just buy a metric shit ton of crap. Having said that I look at the Fresh Comics website every week and plan accordingly. I don't have too much that I'm into right now or wouldn't just wait for the trade of. I literally have 2 single issues for the rest of the year that I'll buy new (Vengeance Of Vampirella #1 and the reprint of Amazing Fantasy #15, the first appearance of Spider-Man) and 1 more con I'm going to next weekend and then Halloween Comicfest at the end of the month that I'm making a costume to wear so I can take ALL the free books instead of a few. The point I'm making is to know exactly what you're into and budget accordingly. Don't just buy books blindly hoping they'll be worth something someday. Comics are a lousy investment unless you really know your stuff. Remember what happened in the 90's when DC "killed Superman"....that book is worth about $4 on a good day because they printed tons of them anticipating the value to skyrocket and it never did because once everybody bought the book nobody else wanted it later.

dennis Hayes : I’d rather not say, every collection I buy has different circumstances however, the New Mutants 98 is probably worth more today than what I paid then. When a collection is such a mess and I’m moving fast I can miss things (very rare), but in this case it was a big comedy of errors & a considerable amount of time went by so it is just one of those things to learn from. (Literally no one else wanted the collection because it was such a disorganized mess...it could have went either way for me but turned out to have a silver lining). Thanks for watching Dennis. Silver

I’ve run into this type of thing one other time but it’s really rare, my guess is that he was buying in bulk maybe at a flea market and neither he nor the seller took the time to go through everything and then I bought and did the same. The vast majority of time I end up with boxes of run filler which is fine but this one had a couple of buried treasures, that’s for me the most exciting part of buying collections. The second favorite is when I buy a box of inexpensive books and years later one of them gets hot for some crazy reason lol. I still get calls to buy collections & every time I wonder & dream of the “possibilities, it’s really exciting to have those opportunities! Thanks Alex for watching, be awesome! Silver

WAUGHH! A collection of SAD SACK comics in decent shape?? Calm down, my heart! TRIVIA Jerry Lewis played Sad Sack in a live action movie! I don't know if they will ever be reprinted because Sack was licensed by Harvey Comics! Maybe it's in the public domain? I always thought Sad Sack comics were funnier than Beetle Bailey or Gomer Pyle!

Yeah, collecting can be joyous, and can be an addiction, just like drugs and alcohol - life can be easy, but it often is not for people and at times, it is not for all of us. It would suck to have something that brings you joy become an anchor or perceived as problem (i.e. the ex-wife - LOL - just kidding - we were young) but yeah, if you can make the hobby ancillary to the whole of living a good clean, healthy life, then you are truly in the money, but good people all make mistakes, we all error and we all sin. Hopefully the dude got some good out of his interactions with you. We were all young and we all learn life lessons - that is my two cents and man, oh man, I wish i could run into some of these deals... not knowing what u paid, but id dial up a collection like that at a percentage buy

Chris M : I’ve not run back into Kyle but I hope so too. As for the deal, it was too good to be true, if Kyle or I knew the great comics were in there I would have gladly paid him much much, much more but, he didn’t really know what he had & I didn’t even want the boxes so I never looked. (Learn from mistakes right?). I cast a wide net & alway act with integrity so things seem to find me. I have not gotten a call in about a month so, I’d expect the phone will be ringing very soon. Thanks Chris, I appreciate your thoughts, you’re right on the money! Silver

You planned this whole thing out didn't you? You got this guy worked up over your collection (Bringing him into "The Room" is akin to bringing a married man into a harem and saying "See what you're missing?") and he sees your massive collection and gets "Addicted" all over again. He later sells this collection to you and as he leaves, you utter to yourself " I gotta stop doing this." OK: Seriously now...Folks go crazy in a short time over this hobby...buy,buy,buy and THAN realize they don't know what they're doing. If you like something, walk away from it..for a week or two..if that "Burning" urge is still there..than go slow. I'm 57 and I still have to walk away from "That deal" at times because I don't want to impulse buy.even if it seems to good to pass up. In terms of buying (This is to YOU Silver-Aged Dave) you're a real good guy to offer to buy collections at all. I've been offered collections (Real cheap) that are quarter books at best, and I just don't want them no matter how bad a I feel for the person trying to sell. But having a kids in college (Wait..You've got 6 children!) my money is tied up....But I'm in radio, and my wife's a teacher, so Millionaires we not. But you might be for all I know..if you are..I would like you to be my new friend! What time is dinner? LOL!

AFTA Comics : You got me red handed! (Too funny). I have a lot of Comics but I love the hobby, I’d be hard pressed to pick one out I didn’t like. No millionaire yet, when people ask me what I do, I tell them I’m a waitress at Denny’s...(I don’t make a ton of money but I get to take care of a lot of good people & I care about what I do lol). Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment, I appreciate it. Silver

BatWatcher Comics : great question! I think there were a few, I went threw this about a month ago but can remember the specific issues. Most collections I’ve picked up do have at least a handful of Batman comics. Thanks again for watching. Silver

Half the haul so it doesn’t explain as being anything more than that he had schlock comics which you only allude to being not the case. Meh

What is the appeal of collecting expensive books Paying a lot of money for any book isn't any fun
@silver-ageddave2849
@silver-ageddave2849 4 года назад
Gator, great question. For me I collect to appease an empty spot, I had a rough childhood and comics saw me through some tough times & I collect because the books still bring me joy & peace. Coincidentally the value for me isn’t a driving force but there will be people in every hobby who are driven by price. To each their own. Thanks Gator for watching. Be awesome! Silver

If you cared so much about the kid, you would've given him some more money...and the "I didnt even know what was in there, it was so disorganized", I don't buy for a second. Just be honest and tells us how much you love finding people down on their luck to take advantage of. P.S most of us don't care nearly as much about your stories without being willing to tell us what you paid. You can make up anything you want..a price hold you to a little more honesty
