Selling ANYTHING on EBay is a nightmare. I have greatly reduced my selling there.

It’s cuts both ways. I’m a seller and a purchaser on EBay. My worst experience as a buyer was when I purchased a Star Wars 1 9.8 1977 and the seller never mentioned the scratches on the case !! I love my slabs to be in top shape if and when I want to sell. The book is currently in CGC to be reholdered , which of course comes with risk. As a seller you be 100% transparent if there are any issues with the case. Many buyers are very particular with the condition of the case.

As a small time eBay seller, I can attest that eBay has taken my side vs a buyer trying to pull off a scam. Granted, I've never had an issue when selling comics on ebay, this happened when I was trying to sell Hummel figurines for my mom. I took multiple pictures of these things from all angles and posted them to the listing. The guy pulling the scam tried to claim it had glazing or hazing or some shit... (some hummel nerd term for a "hairline crack"). Well, because I had pictures covering all angles, listed it as used, had a very short description and showed the hairline crack he was complaining about within my pictures, I ended up winning the dispute. He sent me back a picture of the hairline crack that was in my pictures. It was still a pain in the ass and something I didn't want to deal with for the $12 that I gave to my mom. There are definitely things you can do to protect yourself as a seller - when someone is trying to pull some scam, ask for pictures. I learned about blocking buyers a while back too. Some knuckle-dragging-mouth-breather wanted to give me shit about telling him that combined shipping was $9 (due to weight) vs $5 (due to weight on 1 book vs 5 as I had advertised). I ended up telling him off. Also, you may realize this now in hindsight, but I don't open up my auctions to international buyers. I think ebay sent an email about that a few months back saying they were going to open up all sales to international buyers, and to be fair, I haven't sold anything on ebay since before that email but I think there might have been an option to opt out. If there was that option, I am sure I took it. Not for Xenophobia, but because lowering the supply in other countries increases the prices domestically.

TBF I received a CGC comic that was not only scratched all over, but was significantly sun faded (pictures showed neither). His pictures actually made the comic appear to have dark colors. I requested a return, which auto accepted since he had them turned on. This guy went off on me as if I was a scammer and sent me soooo many messages claiming I was wronging him. Just because scratches can happen to these cases doesn’t mean they should just be accepted (if they aren’t shown). But not all buyers are scammers either, and I’m not accepting sun faded junk from a seller. I even did a side by side and he told me to take responsibility. For what, I’ll never know.

Had one buyer that opened a dispute, with his credit card company, one week after he received a comic won in a auction, saying he did not recognize the $262.95 transaction for that auction. Ebay did decide in my favor.

After selling on ebay for over a decade, I can tell you that you just have to deal with what you have to deal with on that particular platform. In order to keep positive feedback, you have to let the scammers get over and realize that it's less than one percent. I learned that lesson the hard way. I was stubborn and didn't want to let the scammers get over on me but I realized quick that it was a no win situation.

Great video.. I have seen and dealt with all of those scenarios too. My international sales have gone smoothly for comics the past few years. I just ignore those "please package comics well" messages after a decade selling comics on eBay. I learned you just have to have thick skin and deal with the scammers. My favorite was when I sold a Snoop Dogg CD - the buyer asked for a refund because he did not care for the music on the CD? this isn't Amazon where you can return for any reason - I refused the refund and told him to take up his complaint with Snoop. Keep at the eBay sales.. most buyers are good.

i agree, 1 bad buyer can really get u down but most buyers are good, and honestly comic book buyers are alot better than i expected they would be when i first started. Also it is interesting how the buyers can be different within all the different little niches of comics and other things. Ive learned that certain types of comics and graded comics of course, are more likely to attrack the snobby buyers.

I'm an Ebay Seller, it's really how I fund my hobby of collecting. Great video content as I can totally relate. The way I got about listing my comics are as follows and I only sell CGC graded comics and my approach has seemed to cut back on some of the scamming... #1) I only sell in the continental 48 U.S. states #2) Product description is the following - We do not sell comics in cases with defects or damage that compromise grade integrity. Any significant flaws that do not compromise case integrity, and do not rise to the level of requiring the item be recased, will be reported in the item description. This may include case cracks that are significant but not so extreme that they compromise the case. Minor flaws and small cosmetic defects of the case or inner well are considered acceptable possibilities for all CCG and CBCS cases and will not be documented in an item listing. We follow the practice of the vast majority of the comic collecting hobby, other comic sellers, and other comic auction and consignment services, which is that small, minor cosmetic case defects and flaws are normal and allowable when buying and selling slabbed comics. This includes minor scuffing to the outer case or inner well; minor scratching on the case; and occasional newton rings. Newton rings are a harmless visual rainbow effect sometimes present at the point of contact between two flat pieces of plastic. Newton rings were more of an issue in some older CGC slabs and less common now. Cases may have small minor defects present. If you're not willing to accept that, you would be better off buying slabs in person where you can inspect the slab to confirm it meets your standards. We will not accept frequent returns from buyers for nitpicky complaints about minor case flaws. We make every effort to insure that purchased slabbed comics are delivered to you undamaged. However, we do not assume responsibility for minor side edge cracks or other minor case flaws (either as noted in item description or that occur in transit) so long as such damage is minor and does not compromise case integrity or affect the comic inside the case. Comics are professionally graded by a 3rd party. Grade and Page Quality will be listed in the description. Shipped anywhere in the Continental U.S. USPS priority mail will be used for shipping All shipments are insured from Seller to Buyer. We ship within 48 hours on all paid orders Monday-Friday Any orders over $750 will require buyer signature at delivery No combined shipping Slabbed Comics will be packed with quality and handled with care. More comics added on a regular basis. Thanks for looking and check back often for great deals. If you have any questions, please let us know. We always respond in a timely fashion. NO RETURNS. NO INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING. #4) No Returns #5) I tell all buyers that my comics are insured, which they ate. I purchae and use the additional USPS Flatrate insurance on all my books. That way if it's damaged in shipping or buyer tries to damage case but not the book I'm not running into partial refunds. I pay for the return shipping. If they ship it back, they will then receive a refund. #5) Take pictures of the book before you ship, take pictures of you packing the book, take a picture of the box before shipping, require the buyer to take pictures of the damaged books. If you do all this USPS is really good about paying out on your claim for the cost that you sold it. You have the book back, can always pay for a reholder or grading again from CGC and eventually resell. It it pain yes, do buyer's take advantage of me, not in this lifetime.

I always ask sellers to be considerate when packing these comics as the amount of books I’ve received from all over the world with terrible packaging is frustrating. Sending expensive books in just a bubble mailer etc…I get really nice feedback and messages from my eBay customers about how I pack goods I sell and I always say the same thing that I send how I want to receive.

Easy rule: NEVER buy or sell anything on eBay for a bigger price than you could comfortably stand to lose. So for me, for any transaction under $400, I am fine using eBay, and 99% of my experience there has been great. For any transaction above that $400, I'm going to use an auction house. The added protection is worth the added cost.

The first guy may have had a point if you didn't have a picture of the backside of the slab. The guy complaining about the scratches seems like a jerk. The who spent all that supposed time on the phone with Paypal was either a dunce or a scammer. I've been buying and selling on eBay since the 90's. It seems that eBay is trying to make itself like Amazon, where you can return whatever for any reason. The issue is, eBay is mostly for used and collectable items shipped from the seller whereas Amazon is all new products (not counting Marktplace) mostly shipped from them. No one is going to try to squeeze a few bucks off the new hair dryer they bought from Amazon. With eBay, they've almost incentivized the buyer to make false claims since you're helpless against them. You're either going to lose your shipping and need to pay for their shipping back or suck it up and give the "buyer" the item at a reduced price.

But im still a top rated seller so 1 or 2 negative feedback isnt going to hurt you best thing to do is have an epic block list to minimize the dumb people

I don’t think it’s “off” to ask a seller before you place a bid (or after you’ve won the auction) what shipping methods they use. It may be that you have never bought from that seller before, and just want piece of mind. I always ask the seller before I bid to find out whether he/she will/won’t offer what I think are the basics for shipping items protectively. If they won’t do the basics, that’s a red flag right there, and I just don’t bid on their auctions! Sure I’ve lost out on an item I perhaps very much wanted, but why subject yourself to all the hassle of opening up a dispute and trying to get your money back, if you don’t have to? I also collect original movie posters, and you’d be amazed at how many times sellers roll up posters that were never folded (non folded posters can be, depending on the film, rarer, more desirable and usually more expensive to buy), and put them in a flimsy tube which offers no protection, and they’re surprised when you contact them with a photo showing a crumpled tube and a damaged poster inside! Then you get, “well it must have been the Post Office that did it,” with the seller hoping you’ll just accept that excuse, go away and put in a dispute with the carrier instead!

Sorry to hear about your bad ebay experiences, I know other sellers that had scummy scammer buyers as well. I sold on Mercari and had about 95% positive experiences. I only had 2 stalker sellers and 1 super creepy buyer. I also got 5 star reviews & ratings. Some collectors ask for a discount on shipping, or offer a lower price for the comic, but once the payment goes through you are generally good to go.

eBay is a buyers market. Sellers have zero rights. I learnt this the hard way some 15 months ago. I sold 2x ASM Marvel Masterworks to an international buyer. He said the books arrived with two corner dings. When I asked for photos the photos he provided were poor quality and weren’t even full pictures so he could have got them from anywhere. He then said he wasn’t happy and he’d be returning the books. This is UK to NZ. Seller is responsible for all return shipping costs!!! I ended up giving this person money back and just telling him to keep the books. eBay were absolutely ZERO help to me whatsoever.

I dont think that paypal transaction problem was a scam, I've had this happen to a seller I always buy from. Because I am a good customer of his, he always discounts items and the paypal transactions as described in your email occur. Paypal doesn't register the purchase, so my seller relists the items and they go through. Somehow when I make a counter offer or when discounts by the seller is given, it locks up the system. So I disagree because this has happened numerous times with the same ebay seller I purchased from.

When did the CGC case become a part of the value of the book inside. If a case is scratched or marred how much does it affect the value of the book. Encapsulating comics is good to freeze their condition but is really harming the hobby. That’s my two cents for what it’s worth.

eBay has its moments with occasional good deals but damn there are so many know it alls on that website. The first book I sold was a secret wars 8 and it was in great condition (listing said see pictures we are not professional graders, there were plenty of pictures front to back corner to corner) The guy that bought it from me immediately complained about it (color breaks, a few spine ticks, blah blah blah) as soon as they got it and sent me so many threatening messages over the condition of the book. I told him if he returned the book he could get a full refund but he didn’t want that and it was obvious he wouldn’t return the book so I had to give him a $100(listed for $150) refund from fair market value at the time or he would probably win the eBay money back guarantee and get it all back without even returning the item. At the time I wasn’t aware of how things worked as a seller and I only sold a few more things after that. Just crazy how good things can get ruined by people that take advantage of this system. Beware to all that want to sell and be honest people on that website!

I learned my lesson back in 2017 and just started attaching the following message when I order can you pack this either one of two ways. After using the following message it greatly cut down on my problems to basically 0%. Actually it's very easy to remove a sticker from a CGC case. Put some Isopropyl Alcohol 99% ( I got a bottle of it cheap from Amazon ) on a paper towel and rub the sticker with it. Then start to peel off the corner of the sticker, rub some more of the alcohol from the paper towel onto the sticker and peel the sticker off the slab. Then put some more of the alcohol on another paper towel and rub the area where the sticker was to remove any residue from the sticker and the area will be nice and smooth like the rest of the case. You would never know there was a sticker there.

Dude I am an international buyer (though I live in Canada) and I pay right away (unless the tab needs to be recalculated for combined shipping). Buyers need to be just as cautious. I just learned a very expensive lesson. I gave a buyer with some negative reviews a shot. I purchased 4 books off him. Right in the listing title it stated combined shipping. When the books landed in my cart (I think 2 we haggled a bit) there was no combined shipping. So I thought "Cool, I'll just hit that request total button and it will be all good right? Huh that isn't working. Np I'll shoot them a message" They got back to me saying they would update the tab or refund me. I gave them 24 hours to do so and didn't hear back. I went on to message them daily with no replies until I was approaching the risk of a non payment strike. Weighing my options I took the hit (as a non payment strike can limit who you can buy from as sellers can filter you out) and ended up having to spend an extra 53-60 USD in shipping making an order that should have been probably 40-50 CAD, 96 CAD. Whats better is that after I paid, they didn't ship anything. I had to involve ebay customer service to get this asshole to even ship the books. When they get here (this happened last week) I expect them to be rolled up and in shit shape (during this time more negative reviews arrived for this seller listing this as a condition the books arrived in). This was from an American seller. That being said I won't paint all American sellers with the same brush because of this asshole. The rest with few exceptions have been amazing. In truth (as I said earlier) buyers and sellers need to be very careful.

You don’t have to pay return shipping for buyer, unless that’s how you set up your return policy. You probably get more sales, and being in this situation is the price to pay if you go that route. If the buyer had to pay, they wouldn’t waste the time for $10.

eBay has gone down hill big time for sellers. High fees, scammers, buyers who complain about anything and everything as if it’s Amazon. I just sell my junk at a loss and it’s still a pain in the ass. I’m not a business. I sell comics and games from my collection that I no longer want, or turnover to buy new stuff. eBay is barely working for that anymore.

I have purchased many collectible items from eBay in the past 20 years, but I don't think I would ever sell anything on it. I have bought cards, comics, and retro video games and I have been satisfied (I'm not a super picky guy) 95% of the time. I'm currently trying to sell some retro games, but I listed them on my local Craigslist and I would rather meet the person face-to-face at my local grocery store. That being said, they have not sold yet but I would rather wait than go through an eBay seller nightmare.

Completely disagree about not reminding sellers to pack well. It will be part of the case info if the book sent was garbage. Regarding the ComicLink sticker and scuffs: As long as you are showing photos of the front AND back of your slabs and provide in the description that it has a sticker, or if there is scuffing -and provide a disclaimer in the description that such may be the condition, you are protected. But a lot of sellers will not allow international purchases because of the cost of a return.

Do you allow returns? It always seems as like eBay comes down hard on sellers who have returns turned off. EBay seems to always take the seller's side in cases like that. Dishonest buyers might even look for sellers who don't allow returns so they can get eBay to force the return. I think eBay does this because the buyer can just go to their credit card bank and request a chargeback. Their chances of getting their bank to reverse the charge is higher if the seller refuses to allow a return.

Personally I've been thinking of doing the same as the 1st buyer. The raw books ive been receiving have gotten to me damaged (in transit). But what's frustraiting is the seller did not package it safely and it got bent or damaged in another way. I always provide pics and return the item but it sucks because i really wanted the item. I can also understand where buyers can attempt to scam sellers.

Not to mention it’s hard to get eBay to stop holding your funds so you have to cover all shipping up front and then wait weeks or a month to get that money back. If you get bad reviews eBay will always hold your money and they will even refund them and then you get screwed. I sell on eBay and I’m still new, but people who do this is fucked up.

Most of these dummies will give you fair warning if you know what to look for the red flags stand out. This goes for buying or selling. If you aren't reading reviews ..you should be. Now they can always be nonsense but if 10 people in the last month have all said the same thing chances are good the issue is real. I dont sell internationally because it's a drama filled mess. Cutting that out is going to reduce your headaches dramatically.

This was pretty delulu to start with... so he's wrong for asking you to package it carefully but at the same time you acknowledge the amount of sellers, especially with low reviews, that send stuff out in bubble mailers on Ebay? Also, he was gonna be particular about condition- you knew this. I wouldn't have taken his message as extortion, as it's really common to offer a seller a chance to rectify a situation you're unhappy with before tanking their rating. Since he brought up the review directly though, you never do that as a buyer, you could easily have shown ebay the messages as proof and theyd remove the review(;

selling can be tough, no doubt. I've sold a lot on ebay, around 1200 items. BUT, ebay sellers, with little exception, hide damage, omit damage, overstate condition, ALL THE TIME (not saying you, these are graded so it's different. Also, yeah slabs come back scratched almost every time, or at least have residue on them). In fact, I'd say about 85% of the time the condition of an item is overstated/hidden damage etc. Why? Of course because they want to sell something quickly, and for as much as possible. And they also know everyone else is doing it, so you can't break precedent if you want to sell your shit. It's just how ebay, mercari, etc, etc, etc goes. Online buying and selling is a real bitch.

From what I remember when they made that change behind everyone’s back, you have to go into your account settings somewhere to disable international shipping. You can’t just disable it at the listing level. After I “opted out” from the setting in my account settings, it no longer included international shipping on my listings. You can google exactly how to do it.
