Selling patterns online doesn't have to be difficult. Often textile + surface pattern designers will upload a few patterns to a digital marketplace like Patternbank and get frustrated when nothing sells!
In this video, we go over 7 tips to creating consistent success for selling your pattern designs on Patternbank. This information comes directly from Patternbank's own newsletter, what they've witnessed with successful designers on their site, and I chime in with my experience as well.

I was wondering if you had any information on how taxes work with selling on PatternBank. Not sure if you're in the US, but would the earnings essentially be taxed by the amount reported through paypal?

In terms of point 4, what do you think about using art from public domain? Quite often the license on them allows all use including incorporating into own design and resale.
@LaurenLesley

Yes, you can always use anything from public domain but it's not always the most original :)

Lauren thank you for this video! I'm finding it difficult to find resources on pattern bank besides their own site. I was wondering if you might be able to answer this question for me. When they say you can't sell the same designs on other sites do they mean the actual design? Does this include print on demand where I would be selling a product not the design? Would love that clarification if you know. Thanks!
@LaurenLesley
@LaurenLesley 3 года назад
Hi Shannon, yes that includes sites like print on demand. The reason for this is because Patternbank's customers don't want to have the same design that's selling on a site like Society 6, for example. Does that make sense? I know it makes it difficult for us artists who aren't always sure which sites sell the best and where we can get the most bang for our time & energy, but at this point, this is Patternbank's policy. Not all sites have this policy, however, so if it's a big turn off for you maybe consider selling on a site like Creative Market instead. :) Best of luck!

Hi, I'm an artist and would like to know how to get accepted into patternbank. I understand that I must upload 12 patterns, but what is the size, what kind of file? what do they expect these patterns to be accepted? these are some of my questions, I'm grateful if you can help me !!!!!
@LaurenLesley
@LaurenLesley 3 года назад
hey Cássia! My recommendation is 12" x 12" inches in 300 dpi. They accept Illustrator (ai) or Photoshop (psd) files. Make sure you keep editable layers in Photoshop if you submit psd files. In order to find some idea, please look at their trends at patternbank.com/trends Best of luck! ✨

Thanks for sharing! Is pattern bank exclusive? the designs submitted there for sale or for application should not be uploaded in any other POD website?
@LaurenLesley
@LaurenLesley Год назад
They want it to be exclusive.. in my mind, it’s especially important if it’s a Buy Out aka sold for the higher price point and immediately drops off the website.

Hello, I'm very new to all this, but I like the idea of it. I create original artwork as well as original photography. I then use my art or photos to create patterns with a kaleidoscope type of app. I don't think the images are high quality. Is there a way to do that, after I've made them?

Hi,Lauren.I wonder if the elements of the designs have to be in a separate layers or only every color(could i merge every elements with the same color on one layer)?
@LaurenLesley
@LaurenLesley 2 года назад
Yes, you can use color separated layers only and merge the design elements onto one layer. I like to keep a separate copy incase I ever want to move motifs around easily, but that does take up a lot of storage space. It just depends on how you want to work, but having color separated layers for Patternbank files is ideal!

Hi I want to know about repeat . You showed a premium design whose dimension was 16 inch by 16 inch . Does this canvas size include repeat ?
@LaurenLesley
@LaurenLesley 3 года назад
I believe most Patternbank designs would be in repeat. Dimension doesn't matter so much as long as it's large enough to work with if it's a raster file. Vector can be any size. Hope that helps!

thanks for your help . 😊 Could you also make a video on how to create different colour way on photoshop , its mentioned when we upload our design . Does this mean adding different colors to same design ? Can we make different colour ways on jpgs of the design ? What is pantone colour separated art work mean ? Does this mean colour separation of the design ? My designs are usually on photoshop with RGB colour profile. I also want to know , what does separating elements in individual file mean? I shall be very grateful to you if you answer these queries . Thanks , Best regards, Amna

Thanks so much for this video, I couldn't find any other contributors on Pattern Bank. I tried applying but was put off because one of their requirements is for you to be already selling your designs via your own website. Is this true? Do I still need my own website to apply? Thanks
@LaurenLesley
@LaurenLesley 3 года назад
Aww, I wish you could have joined the Live call so we could have asked Neil directly. My understanding is I don't think you need to be *selling* your designs on a website, but any professional designer is expected to have a portfolio website to display your work. Patternbank only wants professional designers contributing to their site and this is a good indicator of a designer's skill level. My advice is to make a portfolio website (I use Squarespace) to display your talent! Best of luck 🤗💖🤗💖

Hey Lauren, first of all thank you. I wanted to apply as a designer on patternbank. What i'm not sure about is, it says to upload 12 samples...but thats it. Do the samples have to be a certain size, do they have to be layered? Or can it be just jpgs?
@LaurenLesley
@LaurenLesley 3 года назад
Hi Propela, to be safe, I'd upload a PSD or AI file with layers and I'd make the size 12X12 in 300 dpi. If you do that and your patterns don't have any repeat mistakes then you should be approved the first time around! I'm having a Live Call with a guy from Patternbank over in the Design Tribe FB Group on Jan 29th. You should join if you haven't already!! We'll have a Q+A session at the end. :)

Does it matter if you one uses iPad and not a laptop/pc for designing and submitting patterns. Some designers mention tablets do not allow to share files as clients request? Thanks in advance
@LaurenLesley
@LaurenLesley 3 года назад
It's possible with Procreate to create a layered file and export as a PSD. You could potentially make it work! There's also Affinity Photo and Affinity Designer for the iPad that you might want to look into. You could potentially export to PSD or AI from there as well. I imagine the tech will improve for iPad within a few years, but right now, at least for me, the most efficient way is to draw motifs in Procreate, but finish up in Photoshop on a real computer. I hope that helps! :)

To apply you need to have an online portfolio and a social media account (IG, twitter, etc.). You also need to submit 10-12 patterns. You can submit the patterns in JPG, AI or PSD format. I submitted them in JPG format. It wasn't a problem. My application got accepted within 24 hours. It's not a big deal, go ahead.

Thank you! 🤗 I'd recommend submitting a commercial pattern in one of their main categories such as florals or geometrics. They personally review every pattern you submit, which I actually appreciate, because their website only shows quality designs. Make sure your pattern is clean, layers are separated, and your repeat is seamless. I believe it's first come, first serve so there's no such thing as "asap," but just do quality work and upload regularly!
