So, you've sold a few prints. What are some of the key questions to think about if you decide that you want to make a business of it? Who buys prints and what markets does your work fit into. Do you really want to run a print shipping business?
The second of Keith's videos looking at aspects of selling your photo prints. There is a related article on the Northlight Images web site:

You cannot get too precious about your work. A woman once said to me she was going to buy one of my paintings because it would go well with the colour of her sofa and the carpet in her living room. I said thank you very much and trousered the money. I am even less precious about my photos.

Definitely - It can take some work to see your photos as a 'product' but it is essential

I can agree on sending prints already framed is a nightmare. Luckily the package was guaranteed but it still didn't cover all of the cost of the frame and I thank my lucky stars, no one got cut opening the package. So just roll it up. Tubes are not completely cheap but its more feasible and cheaper in the long run.

yes - I'll do framing, but it is collection or personal delivery only...

I discovered the channel researching the Epson P900. Have always been a hobby artist but garnered enough interest to pursue creating prints. Got my printer yesterday and coincidentally today you've spoken exactly to my meticulous thoughts on the logistics of just what I'm getting into or how far I wish to move away from the artist and employed towards a print service. Thank you for your consistently well articulated videos and documents.

As with your first video on this subject, some great pragmatic points well made! I am not a photographer but produce digital fine art images using software. I use my Canon printer as a ‘proofing’ machine (to see what they look like). If I want to print larger or in quantity I have found a print house I trust to do that for me - and yes it costs, but I don’t want to use all my time printing.
@KeithCooper
@KeithCooper 3 года назад
Thanks - it's that time element that is easily 'forgotten' by people, and outsourcing the printing can be a very sensible move.

Interesting topic. Most photographers these days show their portfolio digitally to potential clients but if you want to " wow " clients I'd suggest going old school and having a physical printed portfolio too to show them your work. Given how we see less and less printed photos these days, it's amazing the impact and reaction doing this creates. There are literally hundreds of thousands of highly talented photographers around that you will be competing with. You don't even need a huge folio, just A4 or A3 size is fine. People don't see large prints very often ( at best they might print 6 X 4 or 5 X 7 photos at their local pharmacy ) so anything bigger can seem very impressive. It's strange how even a compositionally fairly mediocre image can look quite impressive when printed big lol. Having an understanding of printing is also important to clients who will be reassured that you understand a colour managed process from start to finish. It's all well and good delivering nice images to a client that look good on a computer screen but how will they look when they decide to use those images for a brochure or catalogue?.😉
@KeithCooper
@KeithCooper 3 года назад
That's so, however these videos are more aimed at helping answer the 'where can I sell my prints' questions I'm asked rather than anything whatsoever to do with portfolios. A good idea for another video though...

Excellent, very practical and informative. When you sell your prints, do you sign them? If so, what type pen do you use and color? And do you sign on the white border or on the print itself, inside the white border? Thanks very much. Your video is honest, straight forward and to the point. A pleasure to watch.
@KeithCooper
@KeithCooper 3 года назад
I'm not in a market where signing them is a useful marketing feature (for that's what it is ;-) ) I do however include a printed and hand written (fountain pen) note of the print details, ideally on the same paper stock, with the print. This is no grandiose 'certificate of authenticity' - or embossed stamp ...such marketing tools are once again not part of the market I'm in (in the UK) Where I have been asked to sign a print, it's usually in the border with a soft pencil, where it will likely be covered by any matt. This is very much 'on request' though
@sl2608
@sl2608 3 года назад
@@KeithCooper Thank you. I completely agree, signing is very much a marketing ploy. I do not sign mine either. But in case someone asked me to I wondered what would be the best way. I think signing in the white border is the only way for me also. And yes, with a pencil. I would not want to write on the print itself with those heavy marking pens some photographers use. Appreciate your sound advice and wish you all the best.

an excellent continuation from the last episode. Straight to the point. Can you help me about my next printer, I am torn between Epson P900 and Canon 1000 Pro. Which one would you buy, wearing my shoes. I used to have Epson stylus 9880 but I stopped printing 44 inch and maxim I would go is A2 size. I know that Epson has option of rolled paper and Canon doesn't, but it is not a must for me. Let me have your opinion please! Cheers, and stay Safe please
@KeithCooper
@KeithCooper 3 года назад
Thanks - A tricky one - the PRO-1000 still has the best sheet feeding, but uses more ink in cleaning/maintenance. From a print quality POV there's not a significant difference. I've longer written reviews which you should check. If you've any specific queries, email me at Northlight, since I have a strict policy of never publicly making recommendations (for the 15+ years I've been writing reviews) but I'm happy to answer specific questions...

I have since a month the P900, but formerly used the Canon Pro-1. If you ask me about the differences, I would say there is not a huge difference in print quality (ink droplet size in Epson ist better, but there are 8 years in between both). But I‘m impressed how much less ink gets wasted by the Epson compared to the Canon. The Pro-1000 should be comparable to the Pro-1. If you are not daily printing but maybe once a week, then take the Epson. But Canon shines with much better build quality, plastics etc.

Thank you Keith for this informative and enjoyable video. It is perfect as I am currently working on a business plan for a printing business. I am trying to find a sweet spot between quality and price in terms of paper. Hahnemühle is terrific, however not every buyer needs that high quality. I printed "Canson Infinity Photo Lustre Premium RC 310" today and find it a very capable paper (even if only RC). Keith, do you have another idea which Luster paper I could try? & what do you think about compatible ink / 3rd party ink? Looking forward to your next video content :-)
@KeithCooper
@KeithCooper 3 года назад
Yes, anything without a famous name ;-) Not unless you find some way of making a profit from choosing to use it. Most buyers wouldn't know 'high quality' if you hit them over the head with it ;-) once again, those that do will (should) pay for it. Of course, such customers are generally picky, so potentially 'high maintenance' and profit sapping. There are very few papermakers and an awful lot of 'equivalents' For a lustre paper there are loads of them. In the UK I start with my local (Leicester) paper supplier 'Paper Spectrum' - they do a range of papers and the guy that runs it is my go-to expert on papers - I can show him a famous brand and he can usually tell me which paper mill and coater it really came from and whether it's available as a 'generic' paper. This goes right through the range of media types. I've also used Innova papers for many years - they also appear with different names on the box. Also fotospeed and Permajet do some nice papers. Outside the UK, I've no idea I'm afraid. BTW there are currently 3 videos about selling prints - the 4th should be up later next week.

@@KeithCooper Keith, a little thing I'd like to add :-) Do you actually have any experience with rotary cutters? It's very difficult to tell which machines cut accurately. I'm thinking between Dahle (German) and the much more expensive Rotatrim (UK).
@KeithCooper
@KeithCooper 3 года назад
I've two: a ~17" one I bought 20 years ago at a trade show. It works really well. No make that I can see The other is a ~1.5m Avery one. This needs using on a very solid table and with a bit of practice on the paper being cut, to get the hand pressure on the cutter right. So, quite infrequent use - not enough to make any suggestions. I never use 3rd party ink - there is no such thing a 'compatible'. I know how much work goes into ink technology by the manufacturers. I would have to make all new ICC profiles, not to mention the unknown state of the printer whilst the inks transitioned from OEM to 3rd party. All in all I've always regarded compatible inks as false economy for most people, and a surefire indication that the person printing wasn't really focused on quality ;-)

Hi i just deciding if i will sell borderless prints or with borders, what of these you would recommend?
@KeithCooper
@KeithCooper Год назад
The question is about what your market wants? What are people going to do with the prints? Why would someone buy a borderless print?
@matejbednarik8736
@matejbednarik8736 Год назад
@@KeithCooper I would like to sell landscape photographs at local level, places captured on photography, that people know (that is the plan), i think borders would be better, but in other hand i feel little pitty for clients, because they get "less of print", but from aesthetic wiew point, maybe i personally would preffer borders (but i am not sure😳).
@KeithCooper
@KeithCooper Год назад
Borderless prints look fine until you handle them or want to frame them in a matted frame, when you lose some of the image They are fine for 6x4 holiday snaps, but larger prints usually have a border. The answer is only one you can know since you [hopefully] know your market ;-)

Hi, which software do you use for your prints? I have a Cannon printer. Thank you
@KeithCooper
@KeithCooper 3 года назад
I use Photoshop for all basic Photo editing - It is still the old CS6 version. The Canon print software is worth looking at for print layout. The real key for large prints is how you process the images, and that depends on size. I do not use a RIP or specialist printer driver software
