So this is interesting. The logger referred to it as “buying timber” from customers. So its the logger who pays the customer, not the mill. Therefore, the property owner is cut a check basically as soon as the logs leave the property. I would say to beware of loggers who give too wide of an estimate. We passed on a company whose estimate varied wildly. An honest owner will give an estimate with a much smaller variance. Oh, also he told us often these logs leave the country and go all over the world! It makes me so happy to think trees from my property may help someone in some other place who doesn’t have the lumber they need. ❤
They were given access to all 17 acres however the desirable timber grows in the back 15 or so, and that’s where they harvested. In my opinion, it looks like they barely removed any but they did end up with 3 truck loads!!! At the other end where we stay, its a lot of hedge, hickory and cedar and this company wasn’t interested in that.
