Eight years ago or so, Selmer asked their top artists to list traits that they enjoyed in ALL of the Selmer models, from the Balanced Action to the modern-day instruments. Using this melting pot of information and opinion the designers set about designing the ultimate saxophone, that has the flexibility to play in all styles. Today we see the result of all that work.. introducing the brand new Selmer Paris Supreme Alto!

It must be said that Jim’s presentation of these instruments is in a class by itself. To all of those responsible for these videos, well done. They really stand out as the benchmark to follow in terms of what and how. I think the sax and his playing speak for themselves.

Maybe the real test of this new saxophone would be to have George play his Mk 6, a Reference and the Supreme during the same setting. You mentioned the warmth of the Supreme vs the Reference at the end of your review, it would be nice for the viewer to hear that difference.

Deep bass voiceover: "Two decades ago Selmer captured the great sounds of the past in the Reference 36 and Reference 54. And now...after eight years of painstaking research and development, they've gone beyond and finally created something approaching that highly sought-after legend...the purple label Yamaha-62."

Haha- it’s all about money- this is a cheap piece of crap saxophone with a bunch of nice little bells and whistles. It’s a Covid horn - a horn that will make them some money after getting rid of all of those expensive processes to make all those other garbage horns like the reference 54 in the series III - I heard that the brass they using this is a high zinc variant much like the Yamaha‘s

Thank you incredibly much for the detailed and learned presentation of the new Selmer Supreme alto saxophone. Over the years I have owned a lot of Selmers, but I have always gravitated back to my first Mark VI, which just feels better than any other sax I’ve ever played. For the first time in about 37 years, I am tempted to buy another Selmer alto sax. I will be making a trek to the music store to give it a try. I am curious about consistency. When I bought a super action 80, I went through 30 horns and 30 necks and found the best combination of neck and horn. It was truly a luxury afforded me by being friends with the owner of one of the largest music stores in the world. In doing that, I determined that those horns were not very consistent, but the stars among them were truly stellar. Even so, even after finding a horn and neck that produced nearly perfect pitch and consistent sound, and projected marvelously, I still went back to my Mark VI because the newer horn just did not have the ringing Selmer sound that I had become so fond of. That’s just my personal preference. After all that time and money, I did not want a horn that could be mistaken for a Yamaha or Yanagisawa. I hope the new Selmer Supreme saxophone is very consistent, because the days of trying out so many horns seems to be long past. But I am sure looking forward to hearing them, feeling their action and seeing what they can do for me. Thanks again for a masterful presentation. - Shooshie

Bravo on the review as always Sax.Co. I play an SBA alto and Ref 36 tenor and love them both. I have a Mark VI tenor hanging around too. No doubt, from all of the videos I have seen, this new horn is beautiful and will immediately rise to the top of Selmer’s offerings. But, supposedly starting at $7,200ish USD...this thing would have to blow away an 875EXII, which is the best modern sax I have played to date, to justify paying double the price for the same instrument or buying an alto and a tenor (I suppose the same can be said of the Ref 54 and Jubilee horns). They wouldn’t build it if there wasn’t a market for it...but are the bulk of the true professional classical dudes or jazz artists shelling out that kind of cash for a new sax? I guess time will tell. Thanks for the review Jim!

Great demo. How much set up was required in your shop for the Supreme vs other Selmers or for that matter other high end Altos? Also, any idea from your Selmer Rep if and when the Supreme Tenor might be released? There was a comment complaining about the zipper case vs latches. I have to agree, latches would be better. Hopefully Selmer & BAM will fix that. Finally, I don't need another Alto, but I want that horn!!

Nice and thorough presentation! Intonation stands out here, seems effortless in the typical problematic areas. And a very beautiful horn in deed. It’s high time Selmer took up the challenge from their main competitors! In my opinion, Selmer hasn’t been up to par for decades. The Buffet Crampon Senzo, the Yamaha 875EX and the higher end Yanagisawa WO models are utterly amazing, and (again, in my opinion) offer more of a «perfect» blend of core sound, response, intonation, egality and overall playability. If the Supreme manages to challenge these pinnacles of modern saxophone manufacture, then they have really carved out a brighter future. Serious players have kept playing golden era Selmers (BA, SBA, Mark VI) for very good reasons, so if this new concept really resonates with professionals across all genres, there is hope for a continued legacy. Looking forward to trying one!

When I read the specs and adjustments, a lot of them seem very similar to things that are already on the Series III (middle C# correction; slanted side keys; short action on the octave key). Do you feel like it lays like a Series III under the fingers, or is it a new beast all together?

There’s a lot of hype around this instrument, and well deserved. For a brand new instrument I think it’s the best out there. If you want a brand new alto this is it, by far! Now, I had one in my home for a few days which I played for many hours and loved it. BUT when I played it back to back over and over and compared it to my Mark vi (149,xxx) recorded myself and listened back, and asked some very knowledgeable friends, ALL including me concluded that the sound of the Mark vi is better for Jazz than the Supreme.
@DynamixWarePro
@DynamixWarePro 3 года назад
Thanks for the review, it is very well presented. I bought a pro alto back in December, a Yanagisawa AWO2 so I don't need and can't afford another saxophone and the price is a little too high for me with this. That being said, I do really like what Selmer have done with this alto with all the different features and the way it sounds. Its is a bit round with warmth but not dark and it has good and projection. At the end you mentioned that maybe this Supreme could be thought of in years to come as the new Mark VI. I think you said that before in a video about the Reference 54 and perhaps both might be in years to come in some way or perhaps not, only time will tell. If you are able to, could you compare this to the Reference 54 alto? It would be useful to hear the differences in the two side by side, especially considering this is almost £1000 more than a new Reference 54. It would be good to see if the Supreme might justify the higher price over getting a Ref 54 if you really want a Selmer alto sax as I feel those two would be the ones to look at over the Series II and III.

How do you like you aw02? I recently got mine was thinking to upgrade to aw020 or maybe a selmer
@DynamixWarePro
@DynamixWarePro Год назад
@@op14435 First, it has a weight to it as its bronze. It is freeblowing and I found notes just play with an immediate response. I had the spring tension on mine lightened when I bought it. The keywork fits my slightly short fingers well. The build quality is excellent. From day 1 to now, I never once had any issues with it and it still plays as good as it did when I bought it. The sound is warm and rich with a resonant zing (Best way I could describe it) but it might sound a little dull as it doesn't have the brightness of the AWO1 or other modern saxophones like Yamaha's or the solid silver Yanagisawa models. I think it is a little brighter than the AWO20 but the AWO20 has metal resonators over the plastic ones in the AWO2 to help the projection. So far I find that it is freeblowing. Sound just comes out when you play a note, it doesn't feel like you have to work hard to get the note out. The tuning is very good too as it has a more centred tone. Build quality is excellent. In the whole time I have had mine, it never once had an issue and it played as good as it did from day 1. The sound is warm and rich, but some might think its a little dull as it lacks the brightness of other modern saxophones like the other brass or silver Yanagisawa models or Yamaha's. I do like that with mine that it doesn't go over bright. I mainly play classical and some Jazz and have played some ballads and like the warm sound I got when playing Ballads. I recently had mine upgraded with Roo pads and Airtight silver plated brass resonators. I noticed after I did that, it played louder, even when I was playing at normal volumes and it had more depth in the sound and maybe slightly more brightness due to the size and weight of the resonators. I could feel the weight of the resonators when pressing the keys.

Hi Ole, I can answer your question, as I’ve played a SA80 alto for 27 years and just bought the Supreme. In short, if you still love the SA80 then keep it; it’s a great horn. I’m keeping my SA80 for all of my jazz/blues/pop playing. The Supreme to my mind is the ultimate classical saxophone. The only people who need to consider this horn are those for whom a classical tonal conception is very important. I play both, so it’s nice to have two altos that excel in different ways. Of course, the SA80 can achieve a wonderfully complex classical tone, but it’s more soloistic, whereas this Supreme instrument is so finely graduated tonally that ensemble blend is taken to a whole new level.

I feel that this saxophone alone, regardless of the mouthpiece and other things that contribute to the sound, has a brighter sound that really ONLY compares to the Reference. From hearing what the guys over at sax.co.uk have played it almost seems that Selmer still needs introduce a darker new model to compare to your serie 2 or serie 3 from selmer to be that new top of the end. But for playing with a much bigger sound, Like in a jazz setting this horn strait up rips.

Not convinced by the sound of this instrument; very weird. It think emphasis on modern tech and eliminating flaws killed the sound and it does not justify it. Selmer definitely did not consult Stan Getz, who said once that the CURVED saxophone is the imperfect instrument, and that is why it delivers a unique, soulful sound. But this sounds like a hybrid of STRAIGHT instruments: of 1. straight alto, 2. oboe, 3. English horn, 4. straight soprano sax. However, excellent presentation by Jim, the best one so far about this weird new instrument.

@@sergej100qca4 I listened to the official Selmer's video featuring several players, and I listened to this test by Sax co uk. I also watched the Chinese video; it seems that this super-expensive instrument is aimed at rich Chinese public too. Or to anyone who has more money to spend. The 'Supreme' should rather be called "Concept" or "Experiment" because that is what it is: a wild experiment. It has perhaps 20-25% of the curved saxophone sound, the rest of it sounds like a muffled oboe, and a straight soprano. Other Selmer's alto lines are, in fact, far superior to this instrument. They are maybe less 'technically perfect' but the sound is there. Here, the technology is great, but the sound is not there.

I'm obviously not him, but I'm an alto player with a ton of research under his belt to get the right sound. I use a Selmer Paris S80 C* mouthpiece and a Francois Louis Ultimate ligature. It is truly a universal setup (with a great horn!) that has the best tone imo. I can easily go though any and every dynamic level, soar in classical like a flute, go buck wild in a fast paced jazz or samba, and make others weep with a ballad all in one. Vandoren V12 reeds are great to top the setup off too. I hope this helps, you can find this all on sax.co.uk.

@@brendan1888 I would love to hear how the jazz tunes sound with the S80. I love that mouthpiece too but I can't seem to get the sound with it.
@brendan1888
@brendan1888 3 года назад
@@bienchii what I do is constantly do pitchbends. It's not the best thing because it builds a habit you have to force yourself to stop during classical, but if you must, do that and the sound will come. Depends on the ligature too. Classical ones are classical because of how "strict" they are with the reed.

@@brendan1888 I'm a long time S80 C* player (who has had a Concept lurking in a drawer forever). The Supreme comes with a Concept too. I've played mine with both and the Concept is currently my preference.

Eight years to develop a new alto? Car companies develop new cars in golf that time. Selmer gas been making saxophones for 99 years and already had some of the best ones ever made. So why 8 years?

The saxophone industry is tiny compared to the auto industry. Even a relatively big company like Selmer doesn’t have nearly the same resources as the average auto company.

@@zangsax Carlos is correct. Every other year, some company comes out with a new alto saxophone while claiming "it's the best instrument with the most advanced stuff", or, "it's the cheapest and the best", or "it beats all competition" … It's boring. Alto saxophone market is full of marketing exaggerations and bought out performers (endorsers), who will say anything for a free instrument.

well the bridge between the body and the bocal is very inovative, the way of locking this two parts. Btw I used to ear the sound of the sax in real it's such an amazing instrument, also the fluidity when you push the touches is amazing So really new instrument instead of the S3/S2, where the changement was not crazy The Tenor version is in process !
@zvonimirtosic6171
@zvonimirtosic6171 3 года назад
@@saxoetchocolat Any instrument has three sounds: what the player hears, the audience in front of the player, and how its sound is reproduced when recorded. Those are three different sounds. So far, Supreme does not impress in the recorded environment; it does not have much in common with the curved alto saxophone sound. It is shifted towards straight soprano and oboe.

Likewise have been playing an SA80 for past 25 years. I bought a Supreme this week. The intonation improvements are truly extraordinary vs the SA80 and the ease of playing is much greater. However, there is a small loss of volume overall and some of the individual character that different notes have on the SA80 is lost in service of a magnificent uniformity of timbre (which is stunningly complex and lusciously beautiful). Also, altissimo is much easier to produce. It’s a transition I’m happy to make.
