Semi-Final 1 Non-Qualifiers | Eurovision 2022 Review 

Albania’s outfit was criminal. Those tennis shoes with her leotard and pink nightgown were jarring.

It's beyond me how people are still wondering why Albania didn't qualify? Did you all watch the same performance as me? There was nothing good about that performance. She looked ridiculous, screamed as crazy, the coreo was messy and bad... I love many Albanian entries but this one was horrid.

What was quite bizarre for me from Semi-Final 1 was Latvia got 11th in the Jury vote but 16th in the televote? We probably expected that to be reversed.

Based on the performance on the night, Albania did not deserve to qualify. Latvia and Denmark were easily the best non-qualifying performances on the night, and imo either should have qualified over Switzerland.

Spain's performance was quite sexual as well and that did really well with the juries so I'm not sure whether being sexual automatically turns jurors off.

"Ronela sounded great." Did we watch the same performance?? Her vocals were not on point at all.

My favourite non qualifiers would have been Cyprus and Austria, but I do see why they didn't qualify. Ireland on the other hand deserved the final more than any other non-qualifier

I think Albania not qualifying makes sense. The performance just seemed very amateurish imo. Croatia's song was nothing special and the dancing was quite stilted but the Croatian part elevated the song so much

For me Albania got killed by the dress. Pink didn't go with the song. She needed to look more like in the video. Red, black, gold, metal all that stuff.

My favourite non qualifiers were Slovenia and Ireland but slovenia was my all time winner

The only one that didn't qualify that I would have liked to was Croatia.

Deban unfortunately, I did see Albania as a NQ when I watched the performance 🙁 It was one of my favorites after she won the NF but, I still think the issue with Albania was the 180° change in the performance and I'm not referring about the coreography, if you watch the NF and the SF1, it seems they are 2 different persons I think the empowerment and confidence that she showed in the NF was missing un SF1

Literally all I care about is that Lithuania qualified and did well in the finals, she deserved top ten tho🇱🇹

I just love the direct slap in the face most fans got when Switzerland was the first to qualify. People just kept on trying to find reasons to throw sh*t at the guy. Just let him sing his sentimental song xD

Latvia deserved to go to final. That’s it. And an unpopular opinion: Ronela’s voice and staging was so unprofessional

5:40 Ronela sounded great? Her jury performance was an out of breath mess, even at the televote semi her vocals were poor. She couldn’t keep up with her choreography at all

The stage show killed Albania. Whilst it was a very good song, the stage show was far too in your face and ultimately, it was a deserved NQ.

I'm so sad Denmark was ignored by everyone imo it's the best rock song this year.

We have to mention as well that all 12 of Albania’s jury points came from Greece

My favourite song from this semi had to be Austria even though the vocals weren't great I still love the studio version of this song also Unpopular opinion: I wasn't that surprised when Latvia didn't go through They were second in the running order (aka the death spot) also it had to compete with Norway and Moldova which were also fun energetic songs. Looking at the semi 1 results the public only had them at 16th so even they didn't want to send this song through to the finals

I'm surprised so many were doubting Moldova's chances to qualify. I knew Zdob si Zdub would make a great and entertaining show. Was happy they got 2nd in the grand final televote

My favorite NQ of S1 was Latvia 🇱🇻. At first didn’t care for the song, but it grew on me. And after that performance they blew me out of my socks. I love Albania from the start, but the performance was messy ☹️.

I do get why Denmark 🇩🇰 is the last place in the fan poll, but that does not mean that it is not deserved because I freaking love it. It is a perfect masterpiece to me. It is my current fourth place. The song is priceless, love its progression and the vocals were amazing. They just had so much fun on stage and the staging was great. I have always loved the song and I was cheering for the, ever since they were revealed from DMGP. It so deserved to qualify and I was gutted they did not make it. It 100% should have qualified over Iceland 🇮🇸. I want to see them live and meet them possibly so bad, they just seem like such nice people. I love their song and I can’t wait for their new music. I also loved Latvia 🇱🇻 and Slovenia 🇸🇮. Bulgaria 🇧🇬 was really boring but it was at least good vocally but the staging was not good at all. Albania 🇦🇱 and Austria 🇦🇹 were disappointments live and they deserved to NQ tbh although I love the studio versions, the lives just weren’t it. Croatia 🇭🇷 was just too nice, the staging was limp and I also loved that the song had some Croatian in it, I do like it slightly though.

I'm sorry but Latvia deserved to qualify and after seeing the show, I'm more certain they needed to open the show. I've never liked Albania but at least I liked national final performance where she was a warrior. This was too pink and weird About Austria. I was happy that she improved but my husband who saw her for the first time wasn't impressed at all I would gladly kick out Switzerland. Too many sad boys this year and he just passed me by. I'm with televote on this one

Imo none of the non qualifiers were truly robbed except mayyyybeeee Ireland but overall it wasn’t as bad as other years in terms of robbery. Just take out Switzerland and Belgium and add Latvia and something else

My favourite song (generally,not just favourite NQ) was Austria,2nd consecutive year my favourite not qualifies(Roxen in the previous year)

I wasn't expecting to like Moldova, but I really liked it. It was the campy, kooky, wacky act that we all needed this year. Moldova is the Tammie Brown of Eurovision, and I love them for it.

I really don’t get why so many people are surprised Albania NQ, it was just pure mess, shouting, bad staging…I truly loved Ronela before that life performance…

Austria was my biggest disappointment, Latvia was also incredibly sad for me. I think Latvia was hurt by Moldova being in the same semi

Switzerland out without question. I would put any semi 1 non-qualifier through over that song. Personal favorites were Albania and Slovenia but get why neither qualified.

I felt so bad for Ronela 😢

I really think the camera crew let Latvia and Denmark down. Their shots of them didn't seem thought out or structured but instead random and in my view created an impression of chaos and messiness that marred the presence of these two countries. Latvia's fun, cheeky vibe in particular wasn't conveyed nearly as much as it could have been. Austria couldn't stand a chance after Pia Maria began singing, sorry and as for Ireland, imho the vocals/background noise drowned Brooke's voice out partly. You'd hear "That's ri" noisenoisenoise. Switzerland was an underserved qualifier, the song was unoriginal and so so mopey. The Swiss should take notes from the Netherlands and S10 on how to express emotion with some fortitude. No one likes a wallow. And finally imo the secret to Moldova's success was simple: they didn't take themselves too seriously and they invested in that kind of kitch many many people associate with and expect in Eurovision.

Confession: The highlight of the semi's for me, was watching Cinan throwing his dummy out the pram when Ronela failed to qualify. Can't believe those of you who say they never saw it coming - priceless 😂 And yes - it was a mess

Heat 1 NQs: Albania: it took a few listens for me to like, and it was a lot more slow-burn and messy than Slo-Mo or Chains On You, but I was a bit sad that it didn’t qualify. It was very fun and energetic, it was self written and multilingual, it ensured that a notorious reggaeton scene that represents modern Albanian music finally got the ESC entry it deserved and was a change from the predictable stuff Albania usually send, and the revamp was produced by the people who produced Fester Skank by Lethal Bizzle, one of my fave British rap songs. Latvia: the opening line is amazingly funny. It took a few listens for me to like, as it came across like The rapping dog from the titanic movie, but it was excellent fun, and having inappropriate lyrics for a strong and important theme is always fun. Slovenia: my fave heat 1 NQ but I can see why it didn’t qualify. It was just a kind group of A level students having fun and didn’t need to be anything more. It was never going to qualify as it was low impact, but is one of Slovenia’s better entries Bulgaria: good guitar solos but the song lost its way in the bridge, and I can see why it didn’t make it. Croatia: very sweet but not impactful, particularly with other easy listening songs, like Switzerland, Portugal, Iceland and Armenia, qualifying. Surprised this one went so close though even though it was nice. Denmark: not bad, and they were very kind to fanart, but developing the punk-pop parts only 1/3 of the way in was not good, and it came across dated. I hope Denmark return to being a force, but I see why this wasn’t the song with which they would. Austria: I hope they return to the final, in part because of how their 2006, 2008, 2009 and 2010 absences play on the mind, even though Conchita and Cesar have been major successes since, and both got thoroughly deserved results. I also like the Austrian glamour image (and associate it with Conchita’s win, but also with me doing repeated drawings of a sexy fashion model from the country, who has no musical connections, but has sometimes had her makeup done by Conchita’s mentor at fashion awards), and I like how Lum!x and Pia provided an entry that was quite different to what they usually do. The song was very fun and enthusiastic and had a good video, but I think that Lum!X hyping every 30 seconds was the performance’s biggest problem rather than Pia’s inexperience and the staging could have utilised some of the video’s imagery.

100% Albania 🇦🇱 Loved the song the first time I heard it and now am a big Ronela fan! Can I say she was robbed? She was robbed! Ronela deserved to be in the Grand Final.

I can still remember this Semi-Final as the SF in which a large portion of my top 10 went through, and I was very happy.

I'd trade Switzerland and Armenia for Albania and Latvia. I really missed Citi Zeni and Ronela's energy during the Grand Final.

Ronela was a mess in the semi - but even as a mess deserved much more a spot in the final than many of them- on the other hand better than Ronela didn't qualify than to be like sone in the final with 2-3-5 points.

While Albania is still one of mt favorite songs of the year, I'm going to equate Ronela's performance to Lesley Roy's (Ireland 2021) performance - it was too physically demanding for the stamina of the performer. Ronela was out of breath half way through the performance. The sensual nature of the act might have turned off some jury members but Spain was every bit as sexual and scored well with juries.

Moldova/Ukraine qualification was maybe nice but bc of the Diaspora and Name of the country. Again if Austrian/Croatian or Albanian song was represented by Ukraine or Moldova it would have been in the final for sure …+ i would add more juries and not only 5 … also why we dont have young juries in the competition? Majority is older juries, young juries saved Zena in 2019 and i am pretty sure they would have save Austria too this year. Something needs to change, and i am happy that overatted Ukraine is not going to host:) saving life and helping people is more than hosting esc in Ukraine …

Personally I think all the NQ from SF1 deserved to stay in the SF. The others were weak vocally and Austria’s live performance has put me off the studio version of Halo (those vocals 🫣).

In this semi final i loved Albania and Austria. I also liked Latvia and Denmark too. And if i were to kick out someone then i would no doubt kick out Switzerland and put in Albania instead. I would also kick out Iceland or Lithuania (even if i like these songs a lot) and put in Austria instead because i love it more

All these people who deny Ronela Hajati's vocal ablities... You have no idea what she means in Albania as an artist, SHE NEVER NEEDED EUROVISION, believe me! OKAY, she didn't sing perfectly, she had far better nights than that night! She had a better performance in FIK, I agree with this as well, but some of you really wanna deny everything that happened in Eurovision this year: Ronela's performance wasn't the only controversial one, this year generic, old-fashioned and lame entries like Switzerland and Iceland qualified, the kind of entries we've been seeing in Eurovision for years, NOTHING SPECIAL... In the second semi, CYPRUS with an incredible song and staging didn't qualify, Romania got 18th place in the final when WRS had I think the 5th most viewed performance from the Grand Final, trending in Romania and Spain. And of course, the cherry on top, Ukraine winning it all over FAR BETTER entries like UK, Spain or Sweden. Not to mention the voting controversies in the final which were extremely pathetic and made on purpose... As a lifelong Eurovision fan, the 2022 edition was the weakest one in the last 5-10 years, honestly!! There were always political voting and controversies in this contest, but never so obvious and unnecesary ones like this year, honestly... If some of you still wanna believe Eurovision is 100% real, when we've had so many examples that small countries will never win or consistently do well in this competition (Cyprus, Albania, Romania, Malta etc.), it's your choice to believe so. :D
