Talk about close to home! This crash was just down the street from the shop and it was one of our good customers. Thankfully, no serious injuries. Semi truck with a flatbed trailer loaded with a crane counter-weight and crane mats rolled over, flipped, on an exit ramp. We used our 2015 Peterbilt with Miller Industries Century 1150R and our 2006 Western Star with a Vulcan V70 to upright the combination, then used the rotator to lift and reload the counterweight and mats. We had the ramp closed for just under an hour start to finish!!! Please SLOW DOWN & MOVE OVER!!! Thanks for watching and God bless!!!

@xheralt
@xheralt 3 года назад
(1) With the dogleg shape it has, the top is lighter, so the center of gravity isn't too horribly high (2) it's sitting diagonal across the width of the trailer to spread out its weight across the _trailer's_ load-bearing structure (3) flopping it over would have been a huge shock to the trailer's wooden slats (4) easier to lift on or off in that orientation and (5) the client, a flatbedder who knows better than either of us how loads sit, okayed it. _AFTER_ having the trailer (& load) flip once already!

Not much choice but to haul them upright. The hook points are all on top, the amount of rigging and work to lay them down isn't cost effective. The problem wasn't with the counterweight position, the driver simply took that corner too fast.

Me too, I can only guess that it's actually too big and would hang over the edge of the trailer... Ron is a smart dude and would tell them to lay it down if it was possible. That decking on the trailer though, I'd be ashamed to let my customers see that.
@spaceinvadertoo
@spaceinvadertoo 3 года назад
The counterweight, truck, trailer, crane pads and everything else at the scene belonged to the customer. This is why Ron did not object when he pointedly remarked that Ron had no authority to tell them how to load, secure and care for their property. Otherwise he would be held liable for anything bad that happened after they left the scene. It's their stuff. Let them do with it as they will. Also be sure to include all the services fees that would have been part of any invoices billed to the customer.

Seeing it lift and maneuver that big old weight really underlines how they managed to build a heck of a lot of crane into a quite small package (from the turret rails upwards). It's always impressive when it's working hard like that. Nicely done.

@njovwevnjweV
@njovwevnjweV 3 года назад
It appears to me that there were only 2 pick points on that counter weight. So because of that it just makes it easier for the operators to just set it down on the trailer with the lift points at the top. It’s somewhat safer to load/unload like that probably, but as you can see it made it very dangerous in transport :/
@grimsoul0
@grimsoul0 3 года назад
The points they picked from are the lift points. The other hooks sticking out on the side are where it attaches to the crane. They haul it like that so they can just lift it off the truck and put it straight on the crane.

@RonPratt
@RonPratt 3 года назад
@@stellarproductions8888 The orange strap that I used has a safe WLL of 40,000 lbs vertical at a 5:1 safety factor and the blue strap has a safe WLL of 21,200 lbs vertical at a 5:1 safety factor. So the slings used were capable of safely lifting over double the weight of the counterweight and still have been within their safe working load limits when used together. The winch cable (line) used on the main boom winches have a safe working load limit (WLL) of around 17,000 lbs. I had each line doubled so there were 4 lines to the load, which equals roughly 68,000 lbs safe WLL on the winch lines as they were configured for this lift. Again, capable of safely lifting over double the weight of the crane counterweight. The biggest thing working against me on this lift was the weight of the counterweight at the DISTANCE that it was from the rotator on the initial lift and the "short-jack" that I had to do with the left rear outrigger. This comment/response is not meant in a negative manner. It is meant only to inform and be educational. I hope this was helpful information. Thanks for watching and God bless.

I was thinking "that much in the counterweight should have kept it from flipping," but if it was loaded like it was on the 2nd truck, I can see why it did ... not faulting them for doing that, with that kind of weight you wouldn't want to manipulate it any more than you absolutely had too. How big of a dent did it leave in the ground when it landed there? I don't think the landing would have been pretty if the counterweight had still been solidly chained to the trailer, even with a catch.

RON, Hello, at least no snow, , I guess that crane counterweight, was the reason it tipped on that ramp ,,well you got the rig upright ,,then the rest, it’s 11;34 , as it finished, I had a laugh FRIDAY going for my vaccine, saw 10 feet snow ! It was from clearing a shopping mall, , all others are gone, vwey winday here to day 60 mph winds, some lost power already, God Bless you all Stay Safe. Cheers 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

thats a lot of weight to lift away from the crane thought you might lift the crane off the road with the leverage

Another Master class Ron on “how to do it”. However, if the semi that rolled over was loaded the same way as the rescue trailer, it’s not really a big surprise when it rolled over. The centre of gravity is very high. The weight and wood beams should have gone on a low loader in my humble opinion!!!

And here's shown for all who ask for more usage of the green (drag) winch: You can see why Ron doesn't want to. It's way too resistant and unwilling to unspool....

When the first hydraulics came out and began replacing the old Holmes 750s'the industry thought we had the world by the tail. Sure the brute pulling strength of most of the winches was not that of the outside gear driven Holmes winches (nothing has ever been able to match their effectiveness) but they were easier to use, quicker and safer. Then came the first generation of rotators. Great idea, incorporating the mobile crane and the wrecker in the same chassis .Now we are blessed with these new monster rotators which turns everything into a numbers game, no feel at all through the controls. However ,what a job they can do and in half the time. Too bad they still don't cost around $25,000.00.

Hey Ron, just wondering what cameras you use for all of your videos. We own a towing operation here in Tennessee and I’d like to start videoing some of our jobs. Thanks in advance. And keep up the good work, love your videos! Stay safe

I use GoPro for most of my cameras. I do have an off-brand dash cam. It wasn't too popular. The GoPro Hero 7 & 8 Black have been the best I've used. I tried the Hero 9, but did not have good luck with it. Lost a lot of footage. May have just been a defective camera, but I went back to my Hero 8. Best of luck. Thanks for watching and God bless.
