In this video I'll show you the easiest (and free) way to send audio from your DAW to OBS (free broadcasting software) when using a Mac. This will allow you to use all the plugins and effects found in your DAW (reverb, delay, EQ, compression). Using your DAW will also make it easier to mix multiple microphones, allowing you to perform with multiple musicians during your live streams. You'll need to download and install a free audio driver called Soundflower (github.com/mattingalls/Soundf...) or alternatively BlackHole (github.com/ExistentialAudio/B.... I suggest using BlackHole as there are no longer any updates being released for Soundflower.
If you have any questions please leave them in the comments, and I will be happy to answer them.

I can't thank you enough for this video. I spent way too many hours trying to figure out why OBS wasn't picking up line three from my interface. Once I figured out that OBS couldn't pick up beyond two channels, and I needed to utilize Ableton Live (or any DAW) to capture and have that system "talk" to OBS, the missing link was an audio driver and your video!

Great tutorial! Question: How do you capture the audio from your mic while simultaneously capturing the audio from Logic? The only 2 ways I know to do this are: 1. Create a track within the Logic session and set it to input monitor (the drawback to this method is that once the Logic session is closed, the mic signal is also gone) 2. Set up the mic to run straight to OBS (the drawback to this is the latency - too much latency to monitor the mic this way) Is there another method you use? Thanks !!
@knuckledustermusic
@knuckledustermusic 2 года назад
It depends a little bit on what you're trying to achieve. If you're streaming an online performance, then I'd use Logic to mix all my mics and inputs. In that case, yes I'd add an audio track in Logic and have input monitoring on or record enable the track. If you wanted to use your mic outside of your DAW you could add it directly in OBS like you mentioned, but (if your audio interface allows) use direct monitoring from your interface instead of monitoring through OBS to avoid latency. I hope that helps. -Georges

Hi Congrats on this great tutorial firstly. This could end up being a lifesaver for me, if I can fit the missing piece of the jigsaw into place. I've followed your guide on my MacBook, and I'm using a USB mixer instead of an audio interface. I can see the audio bar going up in OBS when I play a track in cubase, but I can't hear it through my headphones connected to my mixer, plus I can hear my mic through the headphones, so there's something I'm not doing right here. Any idea on what I've done wrong please ? Thanks in advance
@knuckledustermusic
@knuckledustermusic Год назад
Hi Pete, it sounds like everything is routed correctly to OBS. I would look to the monitoring on your USB mixer. There's usually a button or setting (assign to main mix or something similar) on most mixers that you'll need to engage in order to hear audio from your DAW or computer. Hopefully that does it for you. Cheers Georges

@knuckledustermusic

Are you able to select independent inputs/outputs in Pro Tools? Keep the input as your audio interface and set the output to the multi-output device. Also make sure that you didn't create an aggregate device by accident instead of a multi-output device. I hope that helps. Cheers Georges

Hi! Thank you for this video very clear, i use loopback and Ableton and it works with what you said. The main problem i have is the Latency and CPU, do you have an advice to fix this issue ? Thanks in advance!!
@knuckledustermusic
@knuckledustermusic 2 года назад
Hi Anjaya, the amount of latency you get will depends on both your computer speed and your audio buffer settings. Go to your audio preferences in Ableton and try reducing your buffer size to 128 samples (lower number=less latency, but your CPU has to work harder as well which can cause some digital artifacts). If you're still having a lot of latency, then you should reduce the amount of plugins you're using in your DAW (especially on your master bus). I hope that helps! -Georges

@knuckledustermusic
@knuckledustermusic 2 года назад
@@anjayaofficial it kind of depends on what you're doing. If you're running a big DAW session with lots of tracks and plugins then spreading the load over two machines can certainly help things run smoother. But on the other hand if you're just doing a solo performance with a few tracks then two machines likely isn't needed. Cheers -Georges

Hey Dawkins, how do you have your mic hooked up at the moment and what kind of mic is it? The simplest solution would be to use a USB mic (like the shure MV7) for your voice going directly to you Mac. That way in OBS you'd have two separate audio inputs. One for the capture card, and one for your microphone. Cheers Georges

It sounds like your input in Ecamm Live is set to your Presonus mixer rather than Blackhole 2Ch. I'm assuming you're trying to set it up so that you're feeding Logic Pro with 32 channels from the Presonus, mixing in Logic Pro, and then sending the mixed Logic Pro stereo output to Ecamm? If that's the case then in Logic Pro audio preferences your input should be set to "Presonus Studio Live", output set to "the BlackHole Multi-Output Device you created", and then in Ecamm set your microphone to "BlackHole 2Ch". I hope that helps. Cheers Georges

@@ilyahohenstein692 yes I'd recommend you go with the 2ch option of Blackhole. A few things about latency, you want to be monitoring through your DAW and not OBS. If you're still getting too much latency you can lower your buffer size in your DAW preferences, and limit the amount of plugins you're using (especially on your master bus). Hi Brandon, it's a bit tough to troubleshoot these things without seeing your setup, but I'd suggest first making sure that your interface is indeed working properly. If it is then you can move on. Next change your audio output to the multi-output device you created. Your input source shouldn't change, so your interface inputs should still work. If you are seeing signal, but not hearing anything then you'll know that the issue is with multi-output device. Make sure it is sending audio to both your interface and to either soundflower or blackhole. I hope that helps. Cheers Georges

@knuckledustermusic
@knuckledustermusic Год назад
Are you wanting to stream using OBS and be on Zoom at the same time? Or just use OBS as a virtual camera to feed Zoom? If you set your mic in Zoom as "BlackHole or Soundflower" then it'll receive everything from your DAW the same way OBS would. If you're playing additional audio/media in OBS that you want fed to Zoom, then you'll need to change your monitoring setting in OBS to the "Multi-Output Device" you created. You'll also need to make sure each audio source in OBS is set to "Output and Monitor". Cheers Georges

Anyone know how to get around this or if I missed a step? Thanks.
@knuckledustermusic
@knuckledustermusic 2 года назад
Hey Dire Peril, I'm not a Reaper user, so I can't say for sure, but there's a chance that Reaper won't let you set independent audio input and output devices. Is that what's happening? StudioOne has the same issue. If that's the case this method won't work exactly like I've shown. The workaround would be to create an "Aggregate Device" instead of a "Multi-Output Device". Make sure to select both your audio interface and Blackhole. The problem with doing it this way is that your audio interface will be outputting from outs 1+2 and Blackhole from outs 3+4 (or vice versa), so you'll need to send all the tracks from your DAW to both sets of stereos outs. I hope that makes sense. Cheers Georges
