For the past several years, our Director of College Counseling, Ms. Lisa Sohmer, has written a poem, or in this case an ode, to the senior class and recited it at the annual Senior Dinner.
Here is...
Ode to the Class of 2016
By Lisa Sohmer, Director of College Counseling
Senior dinner tonight, you know what that means
Graduation’s approaching, not much time in between
You went to the prom, you danced and had fun
And missed three days of school by the time you were done
You’ve shared every minute, you’ve shared all the years
You’ve shared all the usual laughter and tears
You work hard and play hard -- you go to great lengths
But let’s admit that attendance is not everyone’s strength.
You’ve Instagrammed, texted, Snapchatted and phoned
No conversation was ever postponed
You’re all so connected - you’re practically one
And high school? Well, it’s practically done.
You’ve been through upper division and lower for some
And in just two weeks, you’ll all be alums
And what happens next? Where to find you next fall?
You’re starting a journey, graduates all.
Most of our grads will stay close to home
Only a few have chosen to roam
Caitlin will take Quebec and Bishop’s by storm
She’ll need her passport to get to her dorm.
College is a place to explore what you like
For Cheyenne that’s LaGuardia and studying psych.
Valentina is sure to start off with a bang
When she gets to the New School and Eugene Lang
Michael has talent and Michael works hard
So he’ll join the conservatory at Juilliard.
Tina has already chosen her path
By enrolling at Queens where she'll study math.
LIU Brooklyn is suddenly hot
They visited Garden, admitted kids on the spot
With two of our best, they’ll never be sorry
To have Zachery Lynch and Alex Anwary
Kaila's on track for a Hunter BA
She's already found the Starbucks a few blocks away
Charles took the final place in your class
Now he’s heading to Boston to enroll at UMass
William loved CUNY and it’s Baruch he has chosen
Plattsburgh for Angelika, where her feet will be frozen.
Nathan wants Med school so he'll go by the book
With chem and biology at Stony Brook
Antonio's future also holds an MD
But first stop is Hofstra to earn his degree
St. John’s always clamors for our Garden grads
They’ll get three this year, so they should be glad
Cesar might run for freshman class prez
Annie wants business, at least that's what she says
Charlie favors art, he likes color and form
Three Garden alums will join the Red Storm.
Now I wrote the poem, but I speak for us all
Who’ve watched you grow up, some since you were small
Your teachers, your coaches, your mentors and friends
Applaud you tonight as you come to the end
But it’s not the end, is it? I’ve reason to guess
You’ll come back to visit with tales of success.
I started these poems in 2009
And finish this year, the end of the line
This poem is long, but it had to be so
Sixteen grads and the places you’ll go
You know that we’ll miss you, there’s just one thing to do
Class of Two Thousand Sixteen - congratulations to you!
