If you need to make quick, cost effective bed rails to help keep a senior from falling out of bed, our SeniorSafetyAdvice.com Occupational Therapist shows you how to make a set for under $10 - using pool noodles, duct tape and scissors. TIP: the closed captioning covers a lot of the demonstration, so just left click on the text box and drag it out of the way, like you would for a window. Sorry to make you do this, but we felt like the captioning needed to be on the video. :)
There are many factors that contribute to elderly people falling out of bed: medication, restless sleep, and physical concerns like dementia, stroke, etc. Bed rails, wedges, or bed alarms may be needed to help seniors safety stay in bed.
Note: We only recommend using pool noodles as a fall prevention device if the senior is cognitively aware enough to understand that they are meant to be a reminder that the person should not get out of bed without assistance.
