I'm actually quite glad Ayrton had that '93 season in the underpowered yet nimble McLaren Ford, it inadvertently gave him an opportunity to prove just how great he really was against the likes of Prost who had a superior car. In my view, 1993 was Ayrton's best pure driving year.
@sargatanas88
@sargatanas88 8 лет назад
+azapro911 thats exactly what i thought so many times. and theres is even more: i am glad many races in 93 were wet races: Interlagos, Donington, Imola, Suzuka. Too bad that in Kyalami it began to rain only for the last lap, with a couple more laps Senna could catch the leader Prost and win. Anyway we were were able to see memorable races.

Some of his iconic races were when he was at toleman and lotus, only winning mattered to him but if he had lived maybe he would have appreciated more driving lesser cars because it showed his real talent, any decent F1 driver can drive a great F1 car, but only a great F1 driver can drive a poor car and win.

I wish Schumacher had active suspension in 1993. Personally I thought him the most impressice driver of that year. As soon as Hakkinen was Sennas teamate the gap between them was pretty small, outqualified him in Estoril, was one place behind in Adelaide. He wasnt as consistent as Ayrton but speed wise he was up there.

I can't understand those who say senna never understood the technical side of the car. Of course he did, he spent hours looking at times during practice sessions and figuring out how the car could go faster. If he or his engineer needed to make technical changes to the car then they would do so. Some people treat senna like he's from the stone age.
@setifaast
@setifaast 10 лет назад
they are fools...Senna drove for Lotus in `87 winning the first race with active suspension. But, Senna hated aids. He was a pure driver. The ultimate driver's driver. Today's drivers don't even compare. Senna's cars had more power, less aero and mechanical grip.

If only Ron Dennis had agreed to use the Lamborghini V12 in 1994 instead of the hand grenade Peugeot V10's. Senna might have stayed because he'd actually been very impressed with the Lambo in testing even though it had a poor record in F1 to that point. Power had already been gained with the Lambo during the tests (changes suggested by Senna) bringing it up from 710 bhp to almost the same level as the Renault V10 (750 bhp vs 760), while reliability would have been worked on in the off-season. The MP4/9 of 1994 with a Lambo V12 and Senna driving could have easily won that title.
@mattiaalbera8526
@mattiaalbera8526 4 года назад
The relationship betweet Ron Dennis and Ayrton Senna had deteriorated due to his economic requests. He simply needed to change to another team after six years at McLaren; Williams had the ideal package and the best engine too. Despire all the rumours and most recent speculations, the Lamborghini-Chrysler connection didn't change much: remember that Dennis had to make investments in order to develop that engine; despite it looked promising, it was old technology (according to the book "McLaren: the Cars"). Ron simply could not afford it. Peugeot was seen as a more interesting solution because the Frenchmen would provide their engines for free, despite they had little experience about F1. So, politics prevailed.

Honda lost the juice and reliability in 992. Williams were growing. Renault began dominating. It's the nature of the sport. Senna did a good move going to williams. He was just purely unlucky! :(
@sargatanas88
@sargatanas88 7 лет назад
the move going to Williams was right, McLaren in 1994 was not competitive. Senna in 1993 won 5 races, McLaren in 1994 0. all said. for years McLaren built their superiority on Honda engine and Sennas ability. though the team was not up to date in aerodynamics. Renault was solid in their way developing constantly their V10 while Honda switched from V10 to V12 beliefing Ferraris rise was engine-driven. it wasn't. Ferrari in 90 was very competitive because of their chassis. A V12 had to deliver a lot of more hp's to overcompensate higher weight and space.

matt gill Unfortunately there's not enough institutions for all of them and much thanks to the power of the internet they eventually form a herd that finds strength in numbers. There's only two ways of dealing with them: Ignoring them or ridiculing them. The latter is pretty crude but works the best for people bereft of reason. Motor racing history is full of great drivers who died in accidents. Accidents tend to happen in a sport where the margin for error is very small. Some people just don't want to accept the fact that their idols are mere mortals that can die. So in order to make reality a little more palatable they come up with convoluted and highly unlikely explanations. Scapegoating is common as they find somebody "evil" to blame.

Senna did not move to Williams because of active suspension, but first, because, McLaren had no more visibility on the engine aspect . Honda era was over and Dennis which is a genius in strategy made a big mistake by underestimating the will of Honda to retire and not having retained them with a project, investments . The second point was the car . McLaren had active suspension in 1992 but was unable to put it in race, because it was not efficient at all ( 4 seconds slower and unreliable) and had active suspension in 1993 with decent efficiency although not at the level of Williams and especially , not reliable . For the record, it provoked 2 crashes of Senna at Imola , 1 crash for Andretti, 2 crashes of Senna at Monaco , 1 crash for Andretti, 1 run-off for Senna, 1 run off for Andretti . With impact on performance . It ruins qualifying of Andretti at Magny-Cours, Hockenheim, Spa . Senna made his 3rd time at Barcelona with the right front suspension disconnected ! The main problem of McLaren was engine, and the second problem was that the aerodynamic department was nowhere ! Aerodynamic was more and more important and you can see in a circuit like Silverstone which is mainly a aerodynamic circuit, the gap between the McLaren and the Williams& Benetton . The Mclaren had to carry huge rear wing and a huge roll because on soft suspensions to deal with the lack of grip . Henri Durand was an aerodynamic engineer that arrive at McLaren in 1992 and made the MP4/8 of 1993 a better that its predecessor but aerodynamics was playing a increasing role, so , the lacks in aerodynamics of Mclaren where more and more serious and it required investments in a department that became great when Adrian Newey who's mainly an aerodynamics) came in 1997 . Look at the MP4/6 of 1991 and compare it with other cars , Williams , Tyrell or Jordan . It's look like they are not from the same era . Same thing with the MP4/7 and other cars . McLaren was backward on this aspect of aerodynamics which played a more important role over years and has no engine to reduce to a gap where Senna could make his difference . It was obvious as Silverstone in 1991 where Mansell took over Senna with less than half lap, not because of a far better engine , but the whole package and especially aerodynamics .

None of the cars you mentioned had any electronic driver aids like the ones he is describing. To make those cars successful he still had to rely on pure driving talent. That's why Berger never achieved what Senna could in the same car. Only a talent like Prost could match him. It was all about the driver, unlike 92 and 93, which was all about the electronics. The Williams FW14 had semi-automatic transmission, active suspension, traction control and anti-lock brakes. Any mediocre driver can look like a genius with those tools. Senna's MP4/4, /4 and /6 had none of those tools.

Senna was on a different level to any other driver, totally committed, in all aspects, his driving skills were amazing,, also his technical expertise, knowing the car and engine. If anyone had seen the TV documentary originally on BBC 2, called. MCLAREN A SEASON. Filmed during the 1993 season. On one episode he persuades the mechanics to change an engine, they think is perfect. But when it's striped down, they find a faulty valve, would not lasted the race. So senna was right!!! Senna's sense of "injustice" was perhaps one of his greatest motivations. In 1994 it was widely reported that Ayrton was convinced Benetton were still running some electronic aids on Schumacher's car. If he believed something wasn't right, he wouldn't let it go. As for those who suggest Ayrton didn't understand technical things, then read all the books - Senna's technical ability was unrivalled, he even tested an Indy Car and having never seen it before, suggested improvements.

Electronically this car was more advanced than even the Williams that year (not my opinion but the opinion of several F1 insiders & designers). McLaren's problem in 1993 was reliability, understanding and harnessing the opportunities the new electronic package presented and an underpowered engine compared to the refined, bulletproof Renault in the Williams.

Senna was in extreme polite. Every body knows that the Williams-Renault 1992 was by far 2s more faster than the 2nd car. In 1993 Prost impose a veto over Senna in Williams 1993. He drive for free. But Williams has a contract with Prost. Meanwhile Fittipaldi invite Senna to test a Penske car to go to Indy Car. He was close to sign until McLaren make a offer to him: $1M per race. The McLaren Ford was a crap. The Ford engine has the '92 specs. Benetton has the 93 specs. And the rest was history

Kallo182 watch some videos on Senna some time. Senna was spending hrs at the track learning about the car. He was the 1st driver to learn the technical side of the car.

a great racing game would be a vintage f1 game that runs through the seasons. just like a real life experience. each season you race, you get the next year's car for the team you picked. start off in 1980 and work your way up to the end of the low lines. would be the best racing game ever.

Only thing was, the Lamborghini deal went sour because it hadn't changed in specs (hp, lb-ft etc) since 91/92. Peugeot offered McLaren a full works deal (think Williams with Renault at the time) but we saw how that ended up.

I know people slag off Michael Andretti, but he deserved respect to give it a go. Imagine being Sennas Team mate, driving a new type of car that's completely unusual to him, twitchy, light and having no feel underneath you with electronic suspension, after coming from a car for years that's heavy and lazy, with steel brakes, turbo lag and fully manual transmission. It was a big ask in reality. Michael was much better than his results shown. The year after this, Michael got back in an Indycar and won his first race back. That says a lot when Mansell was also on the grid.

had they been linked with an actual strong team like mclaren, the funding would have gone through the roof and so would have the development by mclarens own mechanics. lamborghinis (or chryslers) boss promised (and delivered!) much improved engines and plans for the seasons ahead but ron dennis alone disbanded it, due to some deals he had already made.

This car was very good, but the Ford engine was not very powerful compared to those of Renault and Ferrari, and Ayrton Senna proved that he was the best driver of all times in Formula 1.

I would have liked to know more about what he meant about the Ford V8 being "radically" different than the Honda V12. Undoubtedly it had less raw power, but it would have been lighter and perhaps torquier? At this time, McLaren was only delivered the standard sprung valve Ford HB, whereas the Benetton works team had the pneumatic valve HB. Eventually, Ford would give McLaren the same engine as Benetton when McLaren became their best chance at challenging Williams for wins.

McLaren used "2:nd line" engines, meaning they used less powerfull and thus less conpetitive engines than Benetton and even more less powerfull than the old Hondas or the Renault Williams used so therefore a lot of frustration was built up in the team. Which unfortunately led to Senna's move to Williams Renault for -94.

+Audioquest56 The Ford Cosworth V8 was less powerful, but lighter and used less fuel. The Honda V12 was just brute-force power, and not really a great engine. When Honda dropped their works F1 engine program after 1992 and gave it to Mugen, Mugen dropped the V12 and went back to developing the V10 that Honda had used in 1989-90. It was a later development of this V10 that Heinz-Harald Frentzen nearly won the championship with in a Jordan in 1999. As far as the McLaren MP4/8 and its Ford Cosworth V8 goes, they eventually got the pneumatic valve version, but didn't get the same support from the factory even then. They actually ran a parallel development program with TAG all season to improve the engine's performance (sort of like Red Bull is apparently going to do with Mario Illien working on a customer Renault in 2016). Ford wanted to take in McLaren as a second factory team, but they needed Flavio Briatore's permission to do that, and he wouldn't allow it. If McLaren had the best version of the engine and the factory support all season, I have always thought he could have at least given Prost a run for his money that season. It was a good engine, and a good car. Senna just never had a fully developed version until the end of the season.

+John Cate i dont't think Honda V12 wasn't great. It was the only V12 after aspirate reintroduction to win a world Championship (1991).When Honda left F1 Ferrari bought the electronic side of that engine and adapted to their V12. anyway i think it was a fault from Honda to believe V12 is better than V10. Ferrari in 1990 was very competitive but the reason was not the engine, but a better Chassis than McLarens MP4/5B. At the beinning of the 90s many constructors made plans for a V12, also Ford. But a V12 has more contras than pros, first of all the weight. Renault was right making their V10 better and better till 1997.
