It's been a pleasure to speak to 4 x F1 World Champion Alain Prost. He shared insights on his rivalry with Ayrton Senna and the behind the scenes of the team setup back then as well as the crash Senna vs. Prost. The pressure was extremely high back then and Alain shares some crazy moments and how he handled difficult situations. There's been many F1 battles and Senna vs Prost was definitely one of the biggest. Many insights to prepare to this year's F1 Season Finale at the Abu Dhabi GP 2021 - it will be a spectacle: Hamilton vs. Verstappen.

When Prost showed up in Brazil and carried Ayrton's coffin he dispelled the old rivalry, that has slowly turned into respect for this great driver, from a nation that loved to hate him. 🇧🇷

yes because the nation of Brazil is especially good- and warm hearted! Lewis also succeeded to get be liked by Brazilians, by now (after 2008/Felipe unluck), also because of his unconditional admiration to Senna. this interview reminded me the hard moments watching him sitting without a slight little head movement, but then NO movement in his car in Imola 1994 then waiting for the news from the radio :( i will never forget that! im Hungarian, living very close to the hospital Felipe was carried after the accident in Hungaroring Quali 2009, we went there to support him I met his dad hurrying to Felipe's room accompanied by the Ferrari boss, and hoped that he would be OK soon. also Michael Schumi ran - flew- to Budapest and visited Felipe in the hospital,rented a car at the airport then went back. But we can also hear that after an incident everyone else is asking first if the drivers effected by the accident are OK... As Alain and Nico say the humanity shall win and remain in the end of the day between pple in general, and between today s drivers too. (especially after that happened to the championship decider finale yesterday- was shocking and heartbreaking to see both of them and their families )

I couldn't stand him at the time but looking back and taking a step back - I doubt Senna would have hit the sheer heights he did without Prost. Having the natural talent is one thing but having a fierce competetor like Prost on your tail made him achieve remarkable things. When he told Prost he missed him on the radio and wished he'd come back, I believe he really meant it.

A lot of people say Senna would have been the biggest goat in F1 if he didn't pass.. as a Brazilian, I give this man a lot of credit for being one of the main reasons why Senna was so good. He pushed Senna over his limits. Prost created a racing monster. Best duo ever in the sport

Agreed. I've learned to really like and respect Alain. Like you, I'm a Senna fan, but am thinking that Alain might actually be the better driver. . Jim Clark is my best, tho.

Senna really wanted Alain to reconsider his decision to retire at the end of 1993. As he knew that Prost brought out his competitive side a lot more. Especially with Mansell and Piquet not being there either. I think Prost was testing for Ligier in the winter of 1993 and there was talk of him driving for them in 1994, but that fell through.

Alain. An absolute TITAN of F1. Had Ayrton lived, he would not have tolerated a single bad word against Prost. I know this much. I am maybe the biggest Senna fan. But I love Alain. He is the greatest F1 driver alive.

Im not 100% sure I agree that in the eyes of real F1 fans he is underrated. It is true what Dunky above me has said though, Senna's mystique has only grown over the years because of the potential lost because of his death. However, from what we did get to see, and the rivalry with Alain, it is clear to see why they should be regarded very highly, the both of them!!

He is a horrible interviewer. Constantly interrupting and making personal notes. He is not and will never be a journalist. But this video features Prost, so Nico is ok as an "interviewer".

When they talk about Senna's personality, I'm betting my ass that he's projecting in his mind how he is "the Prost" of his own story, against the talented and loved "Senna" who is Hamilton, especially the part where they talk about the press and how Senna was able to convince everyone that he was right lol

My same exact thoughts. He didn't start to talk about himself at any point. Those are called good manners and I think it comes from his home. Finnish people are typically really polite and Nico is half Finn. I've always concidered him as a Finn even most of my countryman don't agree cause he doesn't talk it. Well, it's not an easy language. My sister lives in England and has raises his older son (now 6) years old and talking him only finnish when they were alone. He talked it quite well when he was 3 to 4 years old, but now he is starting to forget much cause he is in a age of getting friends, school etc and none of them talks finnish.

When Senna was fighting against Prost, I was a huge Prost fan; I always have been fascinated by the "Professor" approach to car setup, race and driving technique. This was until Australia '93. After Alain's retirement I suddenly realized that Ayrton was the only remaining guy from my beloved F1 world, with less electronics and pure mechanics and driving skills. Then I started to appreciate Senna in his battle with Schumacher, just because I would not admit that those great times were over...after '94 1st May I have lost 90% of interest in F1. Something broke up that day. I miss those guys, period.

I watched almost all races from 1997 till 2017, until I feel it of love with modern F1 purely due to stupid decisions of FIA and fom (who saw that coming...). That being said, Alain has and always will be one of my favourite F1 drivers of all time.

I will always remember one thing from the tragic race in 94: Ayrton Senna used to do a lap for the french TV, the morning of every race, commenting the turns, etc... And that very day he started talking about Alain and said "I miss you Alain". A few hours later, he was dead...

Prost is not "incredibly underrated!" Anyone fan of F1 with any intelligence knows how brilliant he was, and is most certainly on the top step with very few of the GOAT. In my opinion, as great as Senna was in a lot of respects, he was flawed, desparate, deceiving, un-sporting, thereby will always be at the lower spectrum of GOAT.

Underrated? He's considered one of the greatest F1 drivers of all time, and rightly so. He was the man to beat for the first half of the 1980s.

Alain did not elaborate much about his relationship with the daSilva family, which is a shame. He was actually very close friends with Ayrton's father, Milton, even during and before their heated rivalry on track. So the relationship between Prost and Senna is much deeper and more complex than most know, because Alain had connections to Aryton's family, independent of Ayrton.

Alain Prost was a real Champion. As a Senna Fan i must say, that it was a pleasure to watch him drive. The Rivalry between Senna and him have maked so much fun to watch. yes... that s true.however both Alain and Lewis have been more spiritual,instinct guys, feeling the tracks with their instincts, first, then with the brain/cognition - and then in the Mercedes team both drivers had to share all the knowledge with the other driver and mechanics team, i think Lewis did not fancy it at all to share this positive tricks after their relationship wrecked, because after that Nico was usually immediately faster and got the poles. sorry, Nico i might not be right.

No, that is Nelson Piquet. 3 world titles and his legacy is practically forgotten, at least compared to Prost/Mansell/Senna.

@@BlueSkyCrystals that is true. Although i recently rewarched every race (full races, not highlights) since 1981 till 1989 so far, and there is honestly nothing that remarkable about him. I went into this thinkin "damn how is Piquets legacy so overlooked despite winning 3 titles" and I actually even like him a lot for his honesty and everything, but I understand now without actually understanding it, if you know what I mean. I can recall many good moments including watching Rosberg drive, Lauda calculating during the race, Prost, Senna and a lot of other actually, but when I think of Piquet, mostly his biggest mistakes come to my mind as he often crashed for no reason at all (mainly during his Brabham days, not so much later). It is weird how despite him winning 3 out of the 9 seasons I watched, I can barely remember his good moments.

Brazilian people are very smart and they have big hearts. Ayrton was a god to them and his death was a national tragedy, but they understand the dinamic between him and Alain and they can see the real Alain. This interview was very enlightening to me personally and I have a new respect for Alain. He was always the victim of a press that painted him as the bad guy just to make a story where there was none. The press made a lot of wrong assumptions back in the day. Great interview Nico. Thanks for giving a much maligned man a chance to put the record straight and lets hope he starts to get the respect he deserves.

There was no Senna without Prost ... The most amazing rivalry in sports of all times .... If Senna was alive they would be nice friends....

I know many think Nico was talking about the 2014 Monaco qualifying as the moment the relationship between him and Lewis began to spiral. However since he refers to something minor the engineer(s) pointed out, I wonder if he was referencing the engine map mode incident at Bahrain in 2014. Nico and Lewis had a great wheel to wheel battle on track. Lewis came out on top, but it was revealed later Nico was using a engine map mode that supposedly both teams had agreed not to use. This allowed Nico to really challenge Lewis in the late stages of the race. Maybe the engine mode change was an accident, or not communicated clearly between the teams regarding if/when it could be used against each other. However it happened Lewis believed it was intentional, or was told so by his engineers. Thus Lewis used the same tactic against Nico at Spain after it had been clearly defined it would not be used against a teammate. This began the drift into what Nico calls the “Gray” area where the teams were now divided with engineers/drivers on both sides accusing each other of foul play. Of course this is all speculation on my part based on articles I’ve read along with several interviews and videos I’ve watched. The only thing I know for certain is the engine map mode issue in 2014 did happen, whether or not it’s the minor thing Nico talks about, I have no idea. Hopefully someday Nico and Lewis can sit down as friends once again and share their stories as teammates with the world.

What happened was basically Nico's crew wanting to beat Lewis' crew. They weren't supposed to use engine overtaking mode against each other, just against other teams. They were supposed to race each other fairly using the same mode. Near the end of the race Nico's engineer told him to use overtaking mode to pass Lewis, and he did. Lewis' crew heard it over the radio and told him to use it as well, and he did. In hindsight it truly was a minor thing. Hopefully after Lewis retires the two can do a show together. Lewis isn't close to many people but Nico was a good guy

I loved the moment when Alain said, 'everything that Senna did in his life pointed him straight to me.' I am glad they drove together and made history. Man I remember Nico modifying his glove clutch finger to get a better feel and he pipped Lewis at the start until Lewis discovered the gloves and then got them made as well. I also remember Nico losing muscle mass in Japan to be lighter, but this one about the paint being 80 grams, wow man it just shows you how competitive. Nico share more of these stories please!

To think that some of Ayrton's last words were "We miss you Alain." Still hurts. We miss you Ayrton. Must say I never realised how much Alain had to deal with. I was a Senna fan, but I never hated Alain, and always respected him as a driver. So did Ayrton. I just wanted him to lose. Sorry Alain, much respect though. Needed nerves of steel in those days, and balls the size of planets, (excuse my French). Glad you made it. Fascinating interview, could have been longer though.

So great to hear from Prost, I'm french and I was 17 when he won his first title in 85, I was a huge fan. I had no idea his relationship with the french press and people of France was so bad, I remember when he moved to Switzerland, it was in the news but everybody said it was to evade the high taxes in France. Never thought much of it, others had made the move to Switzerland, like tennis player Henri Leconte. In this podcast Prost depict a very different picture, I was blown away. Still, Mr. Prost thanks for the memories!!!

They don't hold back, they give it to you raw, and there's also the many years of wisdom they have added to the lessons they've learned. I wish Ayrton would have been around these days. I always thought Alain won as much as he did because he was smart, calculated yet kinda boring. But then I saw some old races, how he would powerslide the turbo cars out of some corners. So actually, he wasn't just the professor; he was also incredibly fast when he needed to be.

Little trivia from Steve Nichols, chief engineer at McLaren from 1987 to 1989, then moved to Ferrari in 1990: Prost was meticulously testing his red F-641/2 while Mansell would only show up, burn some tires and go back to golfing, in a nutshell. One day, Mansell did exactly that and his had the fastest lap. Nichols approached Alain, who was interested in testing the car thoroughly and certainly not in signing the fastest lap, and told him that it was important for the boys so they can focus. Prost got changed, jumped in his car, best Mansell's time and asked if they could now do some valuable work. Look at Ferrari's result 5 years before and five years after Prost joined them, and see the difference for yourself. The guy is a magician. And, yes, Prost could be the fastest when he wanted to. 33 poles and 41fastest laps attest to his ability for speed.

Let me say something, I'm Brazilian, but I've always admired Prost, either for the person, or for his quality as a pilot, or as a "professeur". But my admiration for him was consolidated when even insecure - he said - he decided to come to Brazil at Senna's funeral. As a Brazilian I felt honored.

The part where Nico talks about being booed like that by a child is so impactful. Its a shame that a talented driver has to be treated like this by toxic "fans" and biased media. I mean how terrible of a human do you have to be to teach your child that someone is evil just becuase he is against the driver you like. I imagine this is how Prost felt going up against angry Brazilian fans. Not many people today recognize how much Prost is a legendary driver because of this, and becuase the media still glorifies Senna and dish on Prost. This is what Verstappen is going through now too. Its wrong it is just wrong man.

@@chienfuzan Yet Hamilton with a dominant car which got 1-2 in 5 of the last 8 years hasn't won 13 races and 9 races in a row like Seb did in 2013. Has he? Or 15 Pole Positions in a season like Seb did in 2011 has he? When the car was to his liking hardly anyone was as good as Vettel. And Red Bull wasn't as dominant as Mercedes was. They have never gotten 1-2 in the championship. And even after Red Bull at Ferrari he was one of only 2 drivers to even challenge the Mercedes dominance along with Verstappen(Okay Verstappen did it better but). So it's a bit ridiculous to say Vettel is only half as good as Prost. It's very hard to even compare with Prost and Senna being in a different era to even Schumacher. Schumacher was just starting it out when Prost retired and Senna died.

@@chamindujanith6337 All the statistics you are quoting is attributed to Vettel in a Newey designed car which was arguably more dominant as a single driver/car combo during 2010-13 than Mercedes in the hybrid era. You might disagree... Objectively speaking Vettel didn't achieve all that much after he is no longer in the best car. 1st we all should remember that Alan was the driver which Senna admire the most!! As Prost fan since 1979, I never saw such a genuine, humble & open interview with Alan! That's thank to you Nico - because of your humble personality, because of you both are F1 racing drivers and because you both had a great rivalry with a very sneaky teamate which creates his own truth by the media which support him..! I personally was a young guy at the time of Prost & Senna rivalry and I could tell since than that Alan is a man of truth!! That's one of the reasons I likes him very, very much add that to his reputation as a the Professor and as one greatest drivers ever in F1! and above all as a gentleman!! The 1989 Suzuki crash was blamed fifty/fifty on each driver but a year later it was clear that Senna deliberately drove into Prost with catastrophic damage to both cars. At least in 1989 the impact was so slight that Senna was able to get going again.

Great conversation with The Professor. Interesting insights into Prost’s challenges in his teams against team mates and the fans. The tricks he used were clever too. As a teen In UK, I watched Prost win his 4 world championships and I always thought what an amazing driver. I loved watching how he won the championships. He was often very fast but not always the fastest so he became known as The Professor because he would think how to win the championship. He had his eyes on the main prize not each individual race win but consistently scoring good points in every race to become world champion. He would outsmart his rivals. He was the first F1 driver to win 4 championships since Fangio won 5 in the 1950’s. Well done Alain and Nico

As a Senna-fan, I know, it was Prost who extracted every last inch of talent and determination out of Senna and that there is no other duell that is so representative on the two "extremes" of driver types - "the professor" and "the magician"; if racing guys like Jenson Button and Kimi Raikkonen, Senna would not have become the icon he is. Only thing where I do not 100% believe Alain is when he talks about politics - he somehow conveys Ayrton being "the politician". Alain is way too smart and calculated not to be a politician in an enviroment like Formula 1 (and yes, politics existend already then even if it was not such a shitshow like today). As being a Senna-fan, Ayrton is of course number 1 in my perception, but I would place Alain also in front of Schumacher and Hamilton. Just look at the era he raced in and the guys he raced against. Many of the guys racing then would have accumulated more titles if they started racing in the late 90s and 00s instead of Turbo era until late 80s/early 90s.

Alain is a great driver and seems like a very nice person too, but he can also convince himself of some inaccuracies to feel better: In the Monaco 1988 Qualifying, Ayrton beat him not by "2 or 3 tenths" as he says, but by an unbelievable 1.427 sec! over a ~87 sec lap. This was a monumental moment and maybe this is why the press accepted Ayrton's explanation, there was no alternative explanation to such a gap from another great driver in an identical car.

Prost is such an incredible human being to have this outlook after what all of us regular people perceived to be the case and dynamic between these two. I learned a lot from this interview....

Probably the one person i personally want to hear the most. specially coming up to Abu Dhabi gp where max is battling with lewis, because alain himself had at least 5 times or even more that his championship title or the years he's contending, the title is decided in the final race. 1983 with nelson piquet, 84 against the late great Niki Lauda, 85 where he won against piquet, 86 where mansell had tyre blowout and piquet semi blunder spin in Adelaide and prost won that championship. 1987 is also very tight if i remember correctly. then 1988 the rivalry with ayrton begins then 1989 we all know what happened in suzuka, 1990 also in suzuka. i can't really imagine how alain coup with that amount of pressure the last 8 years from 83-90. with the title almost all the time decided in the final race of the season

In 1985 Alain had wrapped up the title before the final race and in 1987 he was not in contention as Williams were too dominant

Yes add to that the legendary rivals he faced and beat regularly, Lauda, Piquet, Mansell, Hill, Villnueve, Senna, Roseberg and on and on. Now thats a great champion!

That intense battle is far more political then in the time Prost was racing. Nowadays, there's the FIA that are simply not impartial and a world that favours the socalled "minority" guy, with his "We race as one" and rainbow helmet.. Too many times this year it's been obvious double standards were used to judge these two great drivers.

Max is a dirty driver. He also whines more than Lewis. Clearly he doesn’t let Lewis pass. Yet he says thats what happens when you don’t leave space. Max is second and always will be. He will have his time after Lewis retires

I am a huge Lewis fan and he’s my favorite driver but I also love you Nico! Keep doing what you do and you will continue to grow. Your maturity and understanding of psychology is rarely matched in retired drivers. You’re a huge role model of mine and just so inspirational. Keep doing you Nico!

I was a boing person myself, but now I understand that it is such a stupid atitute towards the athletes on the other side. I remember hating Prost in the 90's, but today when I think about the reason I hated him, it was just because he was Senna's rival. Now I see that this is not even close to be an excuse for hating someone, and I recognize the greatness of Alain and all the achievements of his career. F1 became such a passion and today I can say I enjoy the spectacle not hating anyone. You are history! It was a really nice interview!

Dear Nico, thanks a lot for interviewing such a legend. Since the childhood I was a Senna fan, but when I hit 30 and got much more involved into autosport and a grown up life in general, I come to think that being a good human is in general is a harder way of life, but more rewarding in the end. Alain is really great person and super sportsman.

We love Alain. Ayrton was Senna because of Alain. He wanted to be the best and to be the best you got to beat the best. Alain helps to keep the memory of Senna alive. This is a great intervies, congrats Nico!

I guess many brazilians don´t like Prost, but for me, lived and watched some races by that time, Prost is one of the best drivers F-1 ever saw. Everyone has that prefered driver, but hate his opponent is absolutely stupid on my perspective. Anyway, thank you Nico for giving us this lovely podcast with Prost! Cheers from Brazil!

After being involved in F1 and working for the top teams, including making your Turbo Nico, that propelled you to the championship, I can honestly say, for the guys in the factory making all the parts and prototyping experimental ideas, theres no greater moral lift than the drivers coming around to each department and connecting with the guys doing the endless late nights shedding blood sweat and tears. In my experience, 14 yrs of it. This happened ONCE !

Alan always shows his humanity is far beyond his ego. Great guy, and a masterclass pilot and competitor. Senna had to develop all his skills to beat him, including fabricate an aura of god for himself. Senna was born rich, but came from a poor and needy country and became their (our) natural hero, but Prost felt he wasn't loved by his own people, but fought against the world to be their first champion in F1. Reality sometimes is unbelievable.
