I was 16 years old in 1996 when I switched schools and end up at Prost's son school in Switzerland. I have always been a fan of Prost, played Geoff Crammond GP sims series and would not miss a GP on TV. On day after school, Prost came to pick up his son. No one dare or wanted to salute him because in Switzerland there is high respect for privacy and also because some rich families (mine is not wealthy) feel that they are too superior to bow in front of another family. I did not care and could not believe my eyes, he was there, this amazing and clever 4 times world champion. I had a binder with 50 blank sheets of paper and I approach Alain for an autograph. He smelled alcohol that day :-) (maybe the champagne from another life victory). He was very kind, signed my paper and the moment I finished shaking hands all the kids around came to ask for an autograph and my 50 blank sheets binder was emptied :-) I lost the autograph, but I hope one day I will meet him again now that I also do F3 in a club for fun. The greatest racing driver of all time in terms of race craft, car set-up, tyre/fuel management and tactical acumen. And also up there in terms of raw pace... his elegance behind the wheel meant he could drive at the slowest possible speed to win. In his early days, his raw speed was clear but his early experiences changed his racing philosophy, he didn't need to qualify first every time because he could race to first.

Thanks for this video. When it comes to discussions about the best GP driver ever Prost rarely comes into the conversation, but that's because people confuse "the best" with "the most exciting and wild". Despite being older and already a double World Champion Prost was at least as fast, if not quicker, in race trim than Senna (except in heavy rain). Some people confuse Senna's desperation to risk it all in qualifying as some sort of proof that he was better than Prost but that is wrong. Prost operated on the basic principle that points are only awarded in the race, something he learnt from Lauda in 1984. This Top Ten covers the matter well.

I'm not saying they are wrong but I'm saying that IF Senna is the greatest then Prost is in the same conversation. Hamilton is a video game driver in a bullet-proof car so isn't in the game and Schumacher was a gifted but dirty driver who was in the right place at the right time (Jordan 1991, Benneton 1994, Ferrari 2000-2004).

Cue the absolute noobs who never watched Prost other than in the abject "Senna" movie. I saw them in their prime and huge fan of both, although I really started to appreciated Prost's style as I grew older. It's also worth mentioning that Prost was terribly affected by Pironi's accident in the rain (the latter crashed onto him, went flying and finally lost his legs), that's why he became more cautious in adverse conditions. Both Prost and Senna were dicks, both were all time greats in their very own way and gave us one of the greatest sport rivalries we ever seen. Sad that some people can't just appreciate that.

Hungary '88 is a worthy mention, after a poor start he was down in the midfield, loosing time stuck behind the slower cars, after systematically making his way up the order, he went on to set lap records lap after lap to catch up to Senna and fight for the lead in the closing laps, finishing a hare's breath behind him.
