Welcome to Sensible Secondhand Classics, the series where we take a sensible classic car worth between £1000 and £5000 and put it through its paces in a very straightforward manner! This time we test a 1989 Alfa Romeo 164 3.0 V6, which may be one of the most attractive cars we have ever had on the channel. Join us as we experience torque steer, get the button wrong for the glovebox, find out what incorrectly set up coilovers feel like, talk about gravel rash, get enthused about brochures and generally experience little of any consequence at all. Nothing untoward then!

Alfa Romeo 164 3.0 V6 Lusso - that is the full name. I am proud to say I owned, used and loved this car. Mine was same color - a fully loaded 1991 American spec with brown leather interior. I dotted over it until I had to move on. I miss it now!

Many thanks Joseph for another entertaining video. It made me think about the demise of the car brochure, having been an avid collector as a child in the 60's and 70's, and then as a car buying adult. I remember being taken to the 1967 Motor Show as a 9 year old and coming home with several large plastic bags of brochures to pour over for months and months afterwards....the interweb isn't the same!

In some ways the original 164 was the nicest. The early cars had the Twin Spark inherited from the 75 (1962cc/ 148bhp- incidentally also designed by Busso) ) but switched transversely for the FWD and the single cam per bank V6 rated at 188bhp. The later cars had switchable suspension , but an opinion shared by other Alfa enthusiasts, the “ soft “ setting was a little too soft , whereas the “hard “ setting a little to hard. The original car was somewhere in between the two settings but better for it with a better handling /ride compromise. The 1st Cloverleaf V6 was updated to 210 bhp still with a single cam per bank with add on modifications to bodywork then the series 2 models had a 4 cam 24 valve V6 rated at 210 bhp for the standard model or 230 bhp for the Cloverleaf. Nice example on here.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 2 года назад
Thank you for watching and commenting, was a joy to drive this, even if was the least powerful V6 which the 164 had, the torque steer was still ridiculous. I have confirmed with the owner that the suspension was not in the correct setting, and he is going to have the coilovers adjusted so it does not feel so bouncy. Incredible to drive, and lovely sound, the originality of this car was exceptional.
@markonmotoring
@markonmotoring 2 года назад
There is no sound better than a Busso sound. Even in 12V form it still looks as wonderful as it sounds. Nice to see some cassette tapes for the unlikely occasion where you don't want to hear the engine. The 164 is a very elegant car with its two tone design and stylish interior. It must have really looked like something special.back in 1989. Perhaps this car having less gadgets than higher spec cars has worked in its favour after more than three decades. I wouldn't like to be searching for some of the more unique parts for one of those such as the climate control unit.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 2 года назад
Yes sir, we like those tapes, but the 164 did bring its own music as well. The sound of the Busso is extremely wonderful... This would indeed have looked very elegant indeed 33 years ago when it was new. The interior trim parts are probably quite rare now, not sure if the cars with climate control are more common or not....

I had one of these back in 1998, almost the same as that one. It was the base V6 in Afa red on a H plate. It came with the fog lamps fitted. I still think the earlier 12 valve engine sounds better than the later 24v unit. It is also arguably more reliable and better on fuel.

@@lloydvehicleconsulting the autobox is supposed to be quite good, but it's got to be a manual in an Alfa 😁. You might get lucky though, I see many more facelifts for sale than pre facelifts these days! From what I understand, the facelift model is a little more Germanic and more refined, again, the raw unfiltered driving experience is more what classic Alfa Romeo is all about and having owned a 12 Valve 164 and the "ultimate" version of the 24 valve in a 147 GTA I must say the earlier engine is the sweeter unit! With regards to torque steer these early ones are famous for it! But the fact that it's probably still on its original control arm bushings will not help as they are over 30 years old at this point. I had similar before I started restoring mine, I could accelerate to overtake and I wouldn't actually have to steer onto the other side of the road, it would just pull me over there 🤣.

A lovely design, the best looking of the Type 4 group. A far more interesting alternative to a BMW 530i and definitely a car to drive rather than be driven in. One to take out for enjoyment as much as transport from A to B. Good boot, great seats, space and a Busso, the package is fabulous. Ford released a 3.5 V6 twin turbo engine in their American Trucks as an alternative to traditional V8s . It is Indeed very powerful and fast but, unfortunately, beside a Coyote V8 it sounds terrible. This Alfa Romeo Busso V6, on the other hand, sounds better than many V8s. Alfa at its beautiful best and a Classic that is at least still priced sensibly. Thank you Sir.

I believe that the Fiat Takeover happened in late 1986 or early 1987, hence the Alfa Romeo withdrawal from F1 racing at the time, to avoid conflicts of interest with Ferrari. Funnily enough Alfa then went Indycar racing using an engine that was based on that of an aborted Ferrari Indycar prototype.
