Although hidden I think there was some excellent "push and pull" steering going on through the slalom. Excellent video as per use!
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 2 года назад
That steering was about four to five turns lock to lock. Add that to the surprisingly low amount of torque from the engine and this car was a bit of a handful at lower speeds. According to Mr Coleman, they are much better out on the open road!

The good old Ford Sierra of yesteryears!!!! These were very great reliable vehicles during their time and they were the most reliable Ford around back then, even as Ford had a reputation of being unreliable cars. My brother had a B reg Ford Sierra 2.0 back in the 1990s and i think it was a GL model which were more loaded, heavier and had bigger engines than the LX which were mainly 1.6 and 1.8 engines. I don't think I ever remember seeing diesel Ford Sierras back in the 1990s. Most of the I remember where petrol. The Sierras where such reliable cars and could very well handle motorway journeys effortlessly. The only thing l did not like about the Sierras were the larger than normal big sized headlights😎
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 2 года назад
With something like a Pinto engine, I gather these can be very reliable, not sure about these later DOHC N9 engines. The rust on them was quite bad, but then again that was the same for absolutely loads of contemporary models. I checked with a couple of former Sierra owners, and the issues I found with low speed manoeuvring were not just my incompetence (which would have been the most predictable outcome), apparently they are all like that!

Oh Sir. My brother's car. My younger brother is an MOT Tester. In 1995 he bought a Red 1989 Ford Sierra Sapphire 2.0 litre GLS with the Twin Cam. It came with a full Ford Dealer Service history from new. It had the patented heated windscreen and air conditioning because it was an ex police vehicle. Beautiful to drive so comfortable, great visibility and such a long legged engine with plenty of power. I have heard since that this wasn't the best engine but this version was great, very smooth and a good strong gearbox the MT 75 . We discovered that the slots in the roof of my 1995 Vauxhall Astra were identical to the slots on the Sapphire so we invested in some Paddy Hopkirk locking roof bars and a big Karrite Roof Box for camping trips. The Astra averaged 50mpg and only dropped to 45mpg at 75 on the motorway with the box on top. The Sapphire GLS's poise was unaffected by the box as was its mpg which stayed constant at about 30 to 33. Very very like a Mk3 Granada, just a little smaller. The 2.9 V6 Ghia Estate was the one to have in that Gold shade like Mr Coleman's. Such memories of proper cars.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 2 года назад
Yes, the suspension layout underneath is extremely similar to a Mark III Granada, from what I understand. Mr Coleman says that the MT75 gearboxes are OK once you get used to them, I didn't find it too bad, it was more the engine's lack of torque and possibly the gearing itself which made this a bit of a handful through those cones, which was an absolute breeze in the Mark I Astra. No air conditioning or heated front screen in this one, sadly....
@seancooke7332
@seancooke7332 2 года назад
@@lloydvehicleconsulting I think that it was a heavier version of the MT 75 that was in Transits and I found them to be very tough, very positive and easy to use. We enjoyed the Sierra Sapphire GLS while we had her, especially for long trips which she seemed born for. Sadly to use the performance, she liked a drink so someone else got to enjoy her because she was replaced by a 1994 Vauxhall Cavalier Envoy Saloon, ( can't be discussed, Sir) . Really enjoyed this. You should try other engines and trims because the Sierra was a great car. The 1.8 LX was most popular and that beautiful 2000 E Sapphire was very special indeed.

Love a Sierra. When I was 21 in 1997 I bought myself a 1992 2.0i GT hatchback in outstanding, low mileage, one owner condition in what I believe was a unique to the model metallic blue (forget the colour name) This was when my friends were running about in 1.2 corsa’s & 1.1 fiesta’s, I thought I was the bee’s knees! 🤣 I adored that car, had it for 5 years & then sold it to my now wife’s uncle (I always regretted selling) & he kept it until he finished driving in 2014 but it’s now scrapped unfortunately. My car had the same engine & gearbox as you’re test car & I had no performance complaints, always thought it had plenty of grunt & it was very reliable. Changed the oil every 5000 miles, plugs & filters etc every 10000 & it never missed a beat. I really must look at booking myself a drive in that car, to bring back some memories. Great review as always 👍🏻

I think that the faster you went with these 2.0 Sierras, the better they seem to get. Definitely felt that even at modest speeds around the test route.... The 2.0 GT must have been a rare model, I don't recall ever seeing one. Yes, very different from the 1.1 Fiestas and 1.2 Corsas/Novas of the time. Shame it ended up being scrapped.

An old work friend about 20 years ago.shared a sapphire 1.8 LX with his dad. I've always like the Sierra, more so than other Ford's for some reason. The 2.0 GLS will be a nice spec car. I love the dash layout. They were always a very conflicted car with the then futuristic aerodynamic styling but tradition front engined, rear wheel drive set up. The late cars look very nice with smoked tail lamps and all models then having wrap around front indicators.
@lloydvehicleconsulting

Yes, the post 1990 facelift cars were very smart, especially the high specification models with two tone paint. I have always liked the design of the Sapphire more than other Sierras for some reason. The fact that the car was in production for over ten years suggests that the styling actually was very forward thinking, and certainly it fitted in far better in the latter stages of the cars life than at the start.

Thanks, that brought back some memories because I bought a used white Sapphire 2.0 GLS (reg G758NEC) in March 1992. I always had an internal chuckle when asked what car I drove as the time because it must have been one of the most longwinded titles of it's time (Ford Sierra Sapphire 2 litre GLSi, not forgetting that very important 'i' 🤣, being the 125bhp version). I was very happy with it and don't recall any issues with low torque or low speed handling. One thing I do remember though was it's appetite for front disks & pads (or maybe I drove it hard) lasting less than 20,000 miles, it seemed like I was constantly replacing them but then with a daily commute of 110-120 miles after my job was relocated from less than half a mile away to about 55 miles that would have been approximately every 6 months with my other trips included.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 2 года назад
Yes, a very long-winded name for some reason, this is technically the same too as it is an EFi (even if I imagined it was a carb engined car initially, since the "i" is not present on the boot lid) with the same power. It was a significantly more difficult car to drive through those cones than a Mark I Astra, for example, even if the Astra had no power steering, as it needed to go into first otherwise the engine would labour, and the steering required far more effort, and from having spoken to other former Sierra owners, it was not just my imagination either, which I thought it was initially (it wouldn't be the first time). What I did notice, however, is that the faster it went, the better it was to drive, and I imagine this would be an excellent motorway car, particularly this trim level with all its extra equipment.

An interesting review, you seem fixated on the rust issue when the Montego and indeed the Maestro faired far worse in this area. Family used to own a second hand car dealership in the 90s and early 00s and the Maestros and Montegos were rusting at 3 years old with every panel was pretty susceptible. Sierras used to wear cams out with a knock but were cheap and easy to replace (along with valve stem seals). The Vauxhalls used to go through gearboxes and later Ecotec ones used to always return with running issues. People used to come and look at Montegos and would comment on the fragility (doors closed with a weird ting and handles would snap) and go for either the Sierra or Cavalier. The 405 was the best in class but the buyers liked Ford or Vauxhall. That brought back a lot of memories, great car and one of my favourites. The Twin Cam was indeed better on the open road for motorway and A road work. The 1.6 best avoided but strong.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 2 года назад
Well, many other people in the comments section seem to have backed me up with stories with stories of six year old rusty Sierras, so I can't just be my bad memory from the time. I don't deny that the Austin Rover stuff from the era was bad in this respect as well, in fact it could have been even worse, but I am only going on what I remember to be true, and it seems that it is from what others are saying. Having driven an SD3 Rover 213 (also chronic rust issues at the time), two Montegos, a Mark III Cavalier and three Maestros on the channel this year, I have got a fairly reasonable idea as to what the Escort (I drove a Mark III last year and a Mark Vb this year) were up against, and I did enjoy the Sierra, although I found the Mark III Cavalier easier to handle at lower speeds. As you say, much more of a cruiser, and it is a shame that the test drive didn't include some faster roads for this car. The 1.6 Cavalier Mark III I drove was quite underpowered, so I can only imagine that the 1.6 Pinto in a Sierra would be a bit slow too.
@davidjames543
@davidjames543 2 года назад
@@lloydvehicleconsulting Sorry, should have been a little clearer, apologies, the Sierra could indeed rust, I guess what i was highlighting is that the Sierra wasn't as bad as the Montego and Maestro, but your reviews on those cars seems to go easier on them in this regard ( I suspect because of your fondness for them). As for the rivals, at the time, the Austin brand was seen as a step below the Ford and Vauxhall and only those that wanted to buy British tended to buy them, heck, even Rover didn't want to put their badge on them! This was the view of the trade and buying public at the time. Anyway, that Sierra is a great example and brings back a lot of memories.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 2 года назад
@@davidjames543, I think that we have all have things that we prefer, and in my case I really love Maestros and Montegos. They were in the family until around 2001. I am sure that the rust issues were bad, most of the examples I have driven have a bit of rust on them, but I just find them quite charming. The 2.0 Montegos in particular drive very well. In their period they never sold as well as the Fords and Vauxhalls as the products of a series of companies continually short on investment and you can tell this in many of the details, but it doesn't mean that I don't like them. The fact that we have different tastes in these older cars makes the classic car scene much more interesting.

The 1.8 was a very popular choice or at least seemed to be the most common choice on examples that I remember that were around where I lived. Generally a very good car but Ford had pitched an ultra modern car, to a largely conservative market. The mark 2 Cavalier came with a saloon as well as a hatch from launch, where the Sierra didn't. As the 80's went on the hatchback was widely accepted. But then the Mark 3 Cavalier came out and was an even nicer shape. Certainly as a company car driver you had a tough choice between the Sierra and Cavalier. Thanks for another excellent review sir.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 2 года назад
No problem at all, sir! The Cavalier was often more popular than the Sierra in the early years, but then the Sierra was improved a lot during its very long production run. The Mark III Cavalier is definitely easier to drive for low speed manoeuvring, but this Sierra looks as if would be very comfortable on long journeys with plenty of space. It was indeed a tough choice at the time.

A former work colleague from a weekend job I had 25 years ago had a gold Sapphire, I think it was a D or E reg GL spec so around 8 or 9 years old at the time. It had some serious rust creeping through but he did live near the coast iirc. In spring 1997 I bought a silica gold D reg Escort mark 4 GL. It had the same seat trim as this.

Ahh yes the Ford Sierra Saphire, booted version of the Sierra hatch, I remember these very well, as much as I remember that puff of blue smoke on startup and the camshaft noise. Yes initially the Sierra wasn’t a hit as people didn’t like the new “Jellymould” styling, and to this day a lot of people still prefer the 3 box style of a saloon which certainly the case with BMW’s. This Sierra looks a nice one, I used to work with somebody who had an identical car, even down to the alloys, or is that wheel trims? Yes they did rust, sills, outer wheel arches etc. My favourite version of the Sierra were the last ones on a G-K reg with the smoked rear lenses. Great review Mr Lloyd as always, thanks.👍
@lloydvehicleconsulting

You are correct, sir, these are actually wheel trims which even fooled me! Purchased an early 2.0GL Sierra KPU 586Y 2nd hand to replace a written off mk 5 Cortina in 1986. It was fitted with the warning light panel below the centre vents. This monitored brake / coolant / washer / engine oil levels. Always seemed odd having a wiring harness connected to the dipstick. The car was a great improvement over the Cortina with better seats, rear centre arm rest and generally more 'plush'. It did develop the not wanting to select 2nd gear when cold, but I used to go from 1st to 3rd until it warmed up. It was fitted with a hinged rear parcel shelf which I always thought was a good idea. Not sure when this was changed, as it was not fitted to the next 1990 Sierra that I owned.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 2 года назад
Yes, the Sapphires were only made after the 1987 facelift, and by that time I think the warning panel had been removed from most Sierras. Electronic dipsticks are fitted to quite a number of cars these days, but would have been rare at the time of the Sierra's launch. This GLS certainly was quite plush, and seemed very comfortable.

Beauty lays in the eye of the beholder of course, but to my eye the Sierra Sapphire is a very stylish vehicle indeed, and for once I must (respectfully) disagree with Joseph because I'd have one over a contemporary Cavalier or Montego in a heartbeat. They have aged well and arguably look better today then when they first came out IMO. In my time I've owned many different types of Ford Cortina and Mondeo but for some unnacountable reason missed out on the Sierra. It would seem that Sierra ownership has passed me by alas as a decent survivor is around the £5k mark now - if you can find one. As for the prices your wealthy fast Ford aficionado will pay for any generation of Sierra Cosworth ... well that's just stupid money.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 2 года назад
Well sir, the rust on these could be pretty bad, and they were disposable cars for a very long time, which probably explains their rarity and nostalgia is making prices for decent ones rise now. It wasn't the way the car looked particularly or the interior, it was simply the lack of torque in the engine and difficulty with low speed manoeuvring (which is what they are all like, apparently) which makes me prefer things like the Mark III Cavalier and Montego, as I found those both much easier to drive, and prices tend to be lower as well. The Cosworths are all completely stupid money, as you say!
