Welcome to Sensible Secondhand Reviews, the series where we take a sensible secondhand car worth between £1000 and £5000 and put it through its paces in a very straightforward manner! This time, we look at a Volkswagen Golf Mark VI, having previously had the Mark V and Mark VII versions on the channel before, and experience very little of any consequence at all. Nothing untoward, then!

I'm pleasantly surprised with this Golf. From a distance I would automatically assume it was a GTi. Looks very well equipped inside too. Rear seat passengers seem well catered for with the rear armrest and air vents.

It's quite spacious for a three door car, and although it is not a GTi, it is quite well specified for one of these. It's not the most unusual car, but it isn't bad, really.

Interesting video! Very popular in New Zealand, although being a 'luxury' European brand, insurance costs would be quite high. However the Golfs acclaimed safety ratings have contributed to them being highly regarded in our motoring circles.

Yes, not really a luxury brand at all over here! They probably appeal to a similar demographic profile as they do in America, whereas everyone has them over here.

Forbidden fuel vehicles are now forbidden in the US due to the VAG scandal! I cannot recall when 3 door versions stopped being imported as it is only available as a 5 door, which I believe includes the GTI. I also believe the 2.0 litre is only available in the US. If you're up for basic transportation than this could be for you! Thank you very much for the review on this particular Golf!

Yes, there was a 2.0 available, but it was in the GTi and R, I believe. The three doors are around here, but they are less common than the five door versions. The three doors are not sold any more, of course. It is pretty much just everyday transport, nothing fancy, but by no means a bad car, of course.

Excellent video sir. The very dark and gloomy interior reminds me of a 2001 Polo 1.4 that I owned many years ago. Even the switch for the lights was the same minus the auto lights option. I felt much the same about the Polo. It didn't ever do anything wrong, but it was all a bit meh. I couldn't fall in love with it.

Yes, I grew up in a Volkswagen family and have owned several Volkswagen Group products myself, but these days I can't seem to get particularly excited about them. Probably a few parts from the Mark III facelift Polo as you say.

Having driven a Mk6 (can't discuss it) and commuted as a passenger in Mk 8s both 3 and 5 doors (can't discuss these either) I can confirm perfect build quality and great rear leg and headroom. Comfort in the rear is particularly good in the sculpted rear seats in the R Line. Very quiet at speed. Also have commuted in a 1999 MK4 GTI and a 2008 Mk6 GTI and both were very quiet and comfortable as well as having an abundance of acceleration in reserve for overtaking. Overall a bit boring compared to a Focus, Megane or Astra but there is certainly no better way to travel short or long distances than any Golf since 1995.

Yes sir, we had better avoid discussions of the forbidden fuel Mark VI and Mark VIIIs on this channel... You seem to have had quite a few Golfs, sir! It's a very competent car, but I couldn't get very excited about this one, sadly.

@@lloydvehicleconsulting none of these belonged to me Sir they were the preferred transport of two work colleagues in two separate car pools. The car pools also used 2 Astra H, 1 Astra J, 2009 and 2013 Passats, 2006 VW Bora SE, both of my Volvo V70s and my Audi A8, a 2011 Nissan Qashqui and a 2006 Nissan Primera. As I am only 5 foot 4 inches all of the above vehicles were absolutely fine for me to travel in. My only comment would be that the Bora was a bit tight for three in the back whereas the Mk 4 Golf seemed fine. Strange.

stuck between this car and the mk5 gti, any opinions on the gti?

I haven't tried a GTi from either of those generations of Golf, unfortunately, but this Mark VI does seem better made than either of the Mark Vs I tried on the channel last year.

I had a Mk6 Golf TDI 10 years ago & the build quality and solidity felt like it was made of granite, it replaced a flimsy feeling Peugeot 308 10 years on I've now owned a couple of new VW's one of which I currently own, but these days the modern VW's now feel cheap by comparison and no better than the Peugeot's I used to own. How time's have changed
@lloydvehicleconsulting

Well sir, we can't talk about your Mark VI Golf on this channel, but we can talk about some of the others. I remember those first generation Peugeot 308s... I agree, some of the current Volkswagens don't necessarily have the greatest build quality for some reason.

Interesting dub, however it doesn’t have the edge the 5 did, now that was a car, tartan seats in the GTI like the Mk 1 - this had softer looks, I’ve never driven the 6 but I have driven the equivalent Caddy Diesel for many years on and off.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 2 года назад
Thank you, sir! Yes, a bit different from the Mark V, although many similar components. This was a better car than the Mark Vs I drove last year, can't common on the GTis, sadly (would have been more fun)!

Almost forgotten the MK6, some say its a MK5.5 Reminds me of the 997, incrementally better than the 996 but underneath , oh so similar, dressing up, body and trim and diff engines, same backbone So mechanical step on change, no great new model. Was hard buy sell when around 8k and quickly became 5k and was never loved, even at 2999 for higher middle ish mileage ones don't fly away !!!!!!

Well, sir, we did test a Mark VII on the channel and two Mark Vs in one video in 2021 (although we don't talk about that)! The links to both are in the video description. This is definitely a much better car than a Mark V, but I didn't really find much to get excited about, which is probably not much of a surprise. They are actually fairly good cars, but so are many of its rivals, which I think is the problem...

Ubiquitous ! A million times better than the current Golf .

Yes, very strong seller even then, not the most notable car I have ever reviewed, but certainly one which sets the standard in the class.

how many times have your secret mission documents actually fitted in the glovebox..................not many i presume?!
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 2 года назад
Well sir, the Mark I Kia Cee'd certainly fits them, so does a Mark IV Seat Toledo, pre-facelift MG3, MG ZS (depending on which version) and BMW 5-Series F10. Probably more, but I can't remember now

Not a bad looking car MR Lloyd, much better and improved over the ill fated MK 5 Golf.

Yes, a much better car than the Mark V, I know you probably saw the No Budget Reviews episode where I drove two of them, but we can't talk about it.

I think I agree with you…. Competent but a bit meh. Even the GTi which looks great by itself but on group tests the opponents tend to look better. Even not actually being better. I’ve always been been a bit confused why the Octavia is considered to be in the same class as the Golf. It’s too big, it may be on a Golf platform but it is much closer in size, boot capacity etc… to a Passat. Most Golf sized hatches these days are around 4.3m long, the Octavia hatch is 4.6m (longer, just, than a Golf estate). Size wise, the Rapid and the Rapid Spaceback are Golf sized although they weren’t out when the Mk6 Golf was available.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 2 года назад
Yes, even Skoda themselves were always at pains to point out that the Octavia was a rival to the Focus and not the Mondeo, even if they definitely were always closer in size to the Mondeo. I have absolutely no idea why. This Mark VI was a perfectly good car, but I found it hard to have any emotion stirred up inside me about it.
