I get a lot of questions about making an automatic DIY/homemade hooksetter that is sensitive enough for trout and panfish. After searching Amazon I found a hooksetter that might work. Here I show you how to make the DIY Trout Hooksetter, how it works and I take it to a trout pond to test it out. The results were pretty encouraging.

3/32 TIG wire (welding rod) works fantastic and doesn’t rust or corrode.

I think it's worth a shot on any shy biting fish. As long as they get the hook in their mouth when they bite they should get hooked.

There really good for dead sticking oce fishing good for pan fish and trout nothing to big tho unless u go up in wire size

Now that is has been about a year since you made this device, can you post an updated video about how well is has been working and any modifications you would suggest.

I haven't changed anything. I think it the right situation it works pretty well. I've mostly used it for shy biting fish like trout. The only modification I would suggest is to adapt the wire strength for your purpose. If you want a harder hook set use stiffer wire and vice versa. I'm thinking about trying it for ice fishing (making an over the hole tip up using this as a trigger) and/or use it in a survival situation in a creek setting (dangling it from a tree with line hanging in the water etc.).

I am going to try is for pan fish this summer. I think maybe I mentioned trying to make it out of clothes hanger wire but it is not springy enough. The piece was 15 1/2 inches and it turned out kind of small. What are the dimensions of your final piece, if you could share that here please.

Well, of course i'm going to make one. But I wonder if that won't work well for ice fishing, too...

Maybe I will have to give it a shot through the ice. It should work I think as long as your hole is wide enough that the trap can fit through after it opens up.

I'm not sure. Check your local regs. It's legal in my state but I'm not sure in Ontario. My guess is that this might fall into a grey area for some people.

When you first start using it it's a good idea to make a few test casts to see how far you need to slide the swivel up the connecting hook to keep it from popping. Once you adjust it a few times you'll get an idea for how it needs to be set in order to be both sensitive yet not able to set off on the cast.
