Could never blame him, after the atrocities he saw commited against demons his whole worldview was shattered, making him question who the real demons of the story were
Oh its worse. In the manga, it's shown koima 's dad was actually the one causing all the issues. Abducting low rank demons, brainwashing them and releasing them in human world.
Oh its definitely humans. Togashi reminds us consistently, even with the side story with the girls trying to fucked up their neighbour "friend" with using fake fingertips or bizarre noises.
If Sensui had never met Itsuki, then the Vice Feast party wouldn't have broken him, because Sensui would still have his narrow view on demons. Kurama was right when he said Itsuki was at the root of Sensui's wickedness.
Very well put. Toguro struggled with physical aspects of human life and couldn't accept aging and death. Sensui was traumatized mentally when he saw what he saw and couldn't cope with it up until the very end. And Yomi lost and then regained his fighting spirit thanks to his son, kurama, and yusuke.
That's cap. The Three Kings don't represent anything, they were mostly written as fan service. To show how cool the yokai world is, while showing us kickass fights. We couldn't see the full potential of the final season because the writer was sick. The entire show represents spirituality.
Sensui is in all honesty my favorite villain of all time. I love everything about him, his design, his psychology, his backstory, his dynamic with Yusuke, it’s all incredible. I don’t agree with him at all like some try to claim, but that makes him an even better villain in my opinion. He’s just the best.
Well, I guess Cersei has surpassed him but since we read through her POV I tend to forget she’s 100% a villain. Lol, but Sensui is definitely my favorite in manga history and still top 2 of all time.
Dark tournament is definitely peak and deserves all the praise and hype it receives. This is a shonen after all. Now that ive gone through chapter black several times I think that its severely underrated. It’s interesting that Togashi was burnt out and ready to go but produced this stroke of genius. Territories, the moral dilemmas, the introspection the themes and ideas of this arc creates…. Truly brilliant. Really well done dissection bro! 🙏🏼 I hope we get more from you sooner than later 👊🏼
Many many reasons. Togashi was depressed at this time and Shonen Jump wouldn’t give him creative control since Sensui wanted to deconstruct his characters in the Sensui and demon world arc.
Sensui is my favorite villain in Shonen. I find his design, his character, his motivations, and his aura throughout the arc to be overall outstanding. He is my favorite character in the series after Kurama and Kuwabara
@@riz2093LOL did you actually compared togashi to oda? As someone who enjoys one piece, oda is not a deep writer at all. His characters are one dimensional but fun. His fight scenes are predictable and have no suspense. Having massive appeal doesn't make you a goat. Togashi is able to add a human element to all his creation, even villians like meruem. He made what felt like a filler arc (ant arc) into one of the most incredible arc of the anime. This man is a genius
When I see this arc it just humors me to notice how inspired Kubo Tite was when developing the Fullbringer arc. They both share the same thematical narrative. Sensui/Ginjo become disenfranchised by the organization they were working for humans/Shinigami and both recruit humans with supernatural talents to fulfil their objective. I always wonder if Kubo had planned to do more with that arc because there is a point in the story where it felt like it was cut short especially the flashback we never fully see from Kubo's PoV with Ginjo in his Shinigami garbs comforting a scared younger Tsukishima. Would of been nice to get at least one chapter expanding on that flashback.
Yeah I had rewatched this a year or so ago and I noticed all the similarities between Bleach's Fullbring Arc and this. They even had a videogame game dude like Yukio from Bleach. When I saw that it all clicked for me.
I loved Sensui as a villain, how he viewed demons and their world and his multi personalities he suffered made him more complex and his fight with Yusuke was my favorite fight in the series.
I just love Sensui. It’s amazing how Togashi was able to give birth to such a villain character. I’d love to know who’s the inspiration behind Sensui, his design and character. He has this very enigmatic charisma, immensely strong yet gentle aura about him.
I remember they said he watched a forbidden tape showing all the wickedness of mankind. These days he would have broke sooner simply by going on social media.
Blown away..I haven’t enjoyed a video like this in some time. This was such a thorough and complete breakdown down of the character and story, tying every loose end. You’ve earned a subscriber as well as a fan. Looking forward to combing through all of your content!
4:48- Also the existence of demons like Chu, Risho, Toya, Ringo, and to a lesser extent, Shishiwamaru and the "Beautiful" Suzuki brings to question just how evil demons were- given how naturally affable they were compared to up to that point, irredeemable monsters. Kurama, Yukina, and Hiei being the exceptions- the former only adapting to humanity initially out of pragmatism before coming to love one of them to change his character, Yukina being a sweet innocent, yet wanting the deaths of her own kin for how they treated her brother, and the other gradually softening as a character while initially being a morally grey character initially portrayed just as vile as his contemporaries. The existence of such demons really challenged the notion that being a demon equalled being evil and hinted that maybe evil depends on who you are rather than what you are.
Beautifully done. All very well said. I just had the thought the other day of how much Chrollo and Sensui had in common. Would make for some fly fan art
It can't be said how much of an outstanding villain Sensui is. He's clearly a better villain than Toguro to me. Not only was he stronger than Toguro by a mile but he got into Yusuke's head effectively (and in others' heads apparently), mastered all martial arts to make his own, was able to kill Yusuke and was a Spirit Detective before him. Togashi really outdone himself here
I think Sensui is the template for characters like Pain Chrollo and Meruem. A lot of modern series use this type of villain but the original does not get enough credit. I thin Sensui is the best character Togashi has written but toguro is the best villain
Chrollo I very much believe is supposed to be a continuation of Sensui, elaborating on the themes and concepts of the character dynamic he just couldnt explore in YuYu Hakusho.
I’ll gain more respect to Sensui if he had only become a vigilante. He’ll kill all the evil human and demons without working for the Spiritual World. But no, he decided to resort in the worst form of possible genocide. He had seen 2% evil vs 98% whom he had to protect from evil to the most pessimistic way. He didn’t think of the vulnerable and those who needed him.
Sensui was cool and interesting but the dread Toguro brought, twisted honor, and then later his regret/death wish was peak Yyh for me. Funny how sensui didnt cross paths with Genkai or Toguro and werent mentioned. Im mixed on the split personality at times.
because he lay low, and his existence kept in the dark untill the black chapter he saw opportunity to open the gate for demon world (which Sakyo want to open it freely)
great video and I agree with most of the points raised, was astonishing to watch these arcs as a kid leading to sensui because the battle mechanics was different, not the typical shonen way.
I love Sensui, he's my fave Yu Yu Hakusho character. thank you for the video on him!! as I feel like sharing, my top five YYH characters are: 1 - Sensui 2 - Mukuro 3 - Sakyo 4 - Keiko 5 - Hiei I'd love videos on the three antagonists of the Three Kings arc c:
I never liked the fact that S has multiple personality disorder. It makes sense for his character but having that introduced near the end of the arc I thought was a desperate attempt to make S more of a challenge. If your going to use a character with muliple personality disorder its best to tell the auidence that as soon as possible so it doesn't feel like it came out of nowhere.
@@coolguy1905 That seemed more like a retcon to fit the idea of multiple personalities. Remember, when Murota read Sensui's mind then the code names of each member of his group, his own Black Angel included, went through his mind when he thought the word 'seven'.
One thing ppl often don’t know is how the author wanted to end the series specifically when yuske died but kept going cuz of contract which ruined the ending and upcoming arc…
I enjoy your videos and your analysis on the series I really want to join you on a video to have a in depth discussion on the series as a whole it’s literally my favorite series of all time keep up the good content man
Manga wise, Spirit World are the true villains and have through the centuries, manipulated lower level demons to commit atrocities and crimes in the human world, both to give Spirit World a purpose and authority over the human world, as well as keep demons at a lower class Koenma uncovers this and his faction oust his father.
Bro, Sensui and Chrollo are the exact same character.. Both developed a twisted mind because of the Black Book in (YYH) and Black Tape in (HXH).. Both have teams of their own..
Please make a video on the Three Kings Saga. I did not enjoy it the first time in the anime. But it felt a little better paced and explained in the manga. I would love to hear your thoughts on it. Thank you. Also great video! Sensui, Toguro, and the show as a whole is amazing! Edit: I reread the ending of the manga and WOAH. It was not AT ALL what I remembered! Did my memory mix it up with the anime. I'm so confused! haha But I still would enjoy hearing your thoughts.
best villan other than Griffith. a man pushed to his limit with the darkness of the world. for DID study Sybil. she had 9 personality's and was diagnosed and had late adult onset. facinating, as she was able to conceed 6 personalities down and has 3 today. Sybil may have even inspired Togashi, as she was diagnosed in the 70's early 80's if i remember right
Sensui is my number 1 villain of all time in all fiction, but Griffith, Johan Liebert and Shishio Makoto come pretty close, with Toguro being one level below them
I wish Sensui hadn't died tho ! It would have been awesome to see Sensui carry on in the story. I love this video btw. I appreciate you very much bruv 🙏🖤💯💯💯♠️
he s my favorite villain of all time in all of fiction... but he had to die, him surviving and turn good would have been atrocious for his character, and he s not really dead since the soul is still trapped in his body, he is sleeping in itsuki's arms in that dimension still, and that s the best ending he could have had
@@unknown9zz0 I mean I get that he had to die n im not saying he necessarily had to turn good I just wish he had lived on and came back up in the story cuz he is one of my favorite villains as well
@@carlzombie6722 well, i can understand that and i wish he had a little bit more screen time, but him coming back is not that good of a decision.. if you overuse a character then he doesnt have the same magic about him anymore, he inevitably becomes cliche at some point, you have to know when to put an end.. and again, i think his departure was masterfully done, i'm glad you like him as well btw, he s a hidden gem :
imagine, if you have this kind of character with little (screen) time and it is immediate favorite among YYH fans? yea...compared to Toguro, he is no 1 for me
As great of a villain Toguro is, I still think that Sensui was a better villain, even if by a slight margin. Sensui was more powerful than Toguro while arguably being a more tactical villain. He was in an arc with larger stakes, and ultimately and technically couldn't be defeated by Yusuke and his team, as despite Yusuke gaining the power to match Sensui, he still couldn't defeat Sensui, and Raizen had to interfere, otherwise Yusuke would most likely have died in this battle. I even found Sensui's character to be as complex as Toguro's simply by his former as spirit detective, his fall, how his multiple personalities were a coping mechanism to deal with the contradiction to what he believed, and his reasons for wanting to go to the demon world.
Liked the video off that first statement. As someon who loves Villains more than any other type of characters. Togashi is one of the best to ever do it specially in the shonen sphere.
I tried watching Hunter x Hunter and I gave up on it around episode 50. I feel like the story tried way to hard to the anti-shonen and that made me unhappy with how a lot of events ended. Writers needed to understand subverting expectations is nessessary to keep a story unique but subvert expectations too much you end up with a story that's clichie in the fact it attempts to avoid clichies.
@arikadoriyama4724 Thanks for the response, but that's not a great argument since you can apply that to any story. I understand it takes time for a story to find its footing but that doesn't justify a story failing to keep my attention. It's not like Dragon Ball Super where some fans say you can jump ahead to episode 28 since there are better versions of the first 27 episodes excluding filler episodes.
I got to the palace invasion in Hunter x Hunter and it was a waste of time. There were some things I liked but I honestly don't like Togashi's idea of deconstructing shonen tropes in it and it is nowhere near as good as Yu Yu Hakusho.
I would hardly call Hunter X Hunter a deconstruction of Shoenen,it just perfected the formula Togashi started with Yu Yu and it ended up influencing many series after, notably Naruto, not to mention it came out during the late 90s when those tropes were still new.
Can't wait for the dissection of hunter x hunter characters also. Keep up the awesome videos of both please lol but seriously love the videos keep it up you Killin it
Sensui is a great character but I think what ultimately hurts him the most compared to his predecessor is when remembering him the arguably most iconic scene hes in is him getting his ass handed to him at the end of his arc and its kinda a shame because hes really well written and its not the action scenes that he shines in.
Nah, therapy in the 80's was still pretty shit, Especially in Japan. And no Shrink in the universe would be able to handle atrocities of that magnitude.
All these characters made a simple choice based on their experiences and their personal idealist views. The former Spirit detective looked are things from a black and white perspective. Because since he was a youth, he fought demons on the the beliefs they were all evil. When the ugly truth of seeing humans at their worse, his black and white we're broken and he couldn't cope with it. Togrou became stronger because he was afraid of human frailty. Yusuke was a near perfect blend of both cynical and personal honor. Despite how rough he grew up, he still had a measure humanity for loved ones. He was the best worlds. Human, Demon, Spirit.
This is a fresh take I haven't heard before on YYH! Little bit of production input, you gotta get your microphone up on an arm or something, you keep bumping your desk when you emphasize words and it comes through in the audio
Sensui's story reminds me of the meme "are we the baddies?" But seriously he's the most complex character in YYH and elevated the series to new heights. Things aren't always black and white and sometimes the "truth" we come to know are at best fragments of the whole truth and at worst just plain lies
Yup, to be honest you can show how cruel humans are from historical times such as the Roman conquests, Mongol invasions, Viking raids, The Crusades, slave trade, colonialism, etc. humans are just as bad if not worse than Demons.
So wait a minute. If Sensui had never met Itsuki, then Sakyo's Vice Feast Party wouldn't have broken him. Sensui would still have his narrow view on Demons.
Sensui was gay and in love. There's no doubt that his corruption of men and boys was a direct correlation to his closeted sexuality. Another sign was the effeminate personality that handled emotions other than violence and hate. His death and final scene was a result of his inability to reconcile with a world that looked down on his love and his own issues with handling it mentally. To love a demon man as a male spirit detective in the early 80s....crazy concept.
I actually just finished the Chapter Black arc today. I think both it and the Dark Tournament arc are really good, but I think the Dark Tournament beats it out, just by a little.
I like sensui , but the whole black tape being the catalyst seems too sudden and ham fisted. Like how isolated was he? There are literally TONS of documentaries and books that while not give a graphic view of how bad humans can get, it’s there. Hell if he just talked to a damn veteran cop. 🤷🏽like it’s not that surprising, buddy.
I get what you mean. But I always took it as the the Spriit worlds omniscient view of human events. Instead of watching a documentary about the holocaust, your watching the actual genocide take place in real time for example.
I love yu yu hakusho and sensui but frieza is the 🐐 shonen villain shout out to the obvious best frieza voice actor Linda Young who did legendary as genkai too
Sensui is no 1, Toguro no 2 please, set this right Toguro only seeks for power, while Sensui seeks balance, he knows there are good in demon, and bad in human
One piece, hunter hunter, naruto, most animes big or small dont get anywhrre close to telling a great story as YYH. Chapter black saga is just so insane and that arc alone outshines so many other anime stories.
Interestingly enough demon is actually a 100% accurate definition in the context of the anime despite what you just said. The modern default definition is evil being as you said but the original definition to demon just means supernatural being which plays perfectly into this whole philosophical conundrum this show and arc specifically show well. Modern definition of demon meaning evil being perfectly encapsulates how we (specifically western audience) see any otherworldly beings with special powers as abominations that need to be slain. This is also due to the western culture being predominantly monotheistic and only seeing god himself should exclusively wield such powers. But I'll stop here since this is a getting into the real world. The other thing I wanted to comment on was the DID Sensui exhibits. While his development of multiple personality disorder was definitely the most realistic part, it was hilarious the show explains Sensui is absolved of his sins due to his other personalities doing the dirty work for him. The reason multiple personality disorder is now renamed as dissociative identity disorder is because multiple personality disorder is a misnomer, you don't actually develop new personalities, you dissociate the parts you hate about yourself and fragment yourself across each personality so it's still the same person (or soul in this case). And even if that wasn't the case with DID, this is on par with a person's defense of "I didn't kill him, I just ordered an assassin to kill him , outlined the plan, and paid for everything to be set into motion." I think Togashi probably wouldn't have introduced the idea Sensui's main personality is absolved of sins because of his other personalities given what we know of DID now and don't even call it multiple personalities disorder or would at least later retcon/clarify the misconception that Sensui's other personalities are true actual entities of their own rather than just fragments of the greater personality.
I found Sensui pretty underwhelming, he saw a handful of people be mean to demons, and suddenly ALL people are bad. Yu Yu was a fun manga, but Chapter Black was the weakest arc by a mile IMO.
Dont forget that AT that point he already befriend a demon so he was already confuse And if I remember correctly in the manga he didn't wanted to kill all human , He was just thinking " Since there good and Evil people in both side , what the point of a portal separating them. Let make them interact with each other ans decide who worthy to live "
Sensui would have a better ending if he found a psychologist in his life for his PTSD. But since we're talking about Japan, it's understandable he got no one to talk to (even to this day it's a taboo) I guess it's the same feeling as becoming police officer or military recruit just to witness the atrocities they do. Most also forget what was like growing up with vhs - there was this rumor that there was a tape that contained g*ry stuff from wars and other things. I know some of those were fake, I don't know if there was some real ones. I think it could be from that the author drew its inspiration from.
I'm still more of a fan of Toguro than Sensui. His character was too complex for the time he had on screen. For a good villain, you need time to digest how powerful and bad he is, like Toguro did, like Baran did in Dragon Quest, like Bladelord did in Trails of Sky. It's something you have to build up slowly, with Sensui, it was too fast, Yusuke barely met him was already in the final battle.
I think yokais are moral creatures as well sensui was traumatized because he discovered that human morality was a lie. I think the story of sensui is about seeking true justice and fight for a just cause.
I believe that sensui came to the conclusion that he would not be able to find a definitive judgment on his own about whether what he was doing was correct or not.
