In the complementizing phrase, we describe complementizer or complementizing conjunction. But in the relative clause, we describe the relative pronoun as N or NP.
I feel that in the sentence " I read the book that John gave" the word "that" is really relative pronoun and it joins the two Clauses. The clause behind the "that" modify the word "book".
