When the facts came out about the My Lai Massacre it went to trial, but only one Soldier was sentenced and hardly did any time. Many of the Soldiers were said to have just been following orders, not supposed to be a viable defense but stood up. For the officers there was conflicting testimony, some saying they ordered everyone killed but others remembering that order was just for enemy fighters. In the end only LT William Calley would be convicted but would see his life sentence reduced to 20 years and eventually only spent 3.5 years on house arrest before being paroled.
