Keep in mind that we typically don't see a sonata performance until the third stage of the competition. Meanwhile this is only the second stage and my guy is already slaying the sonata so that he can go on to dominate the 24 Preludes in the third stage (which is the only alternative to playing a sonata during that stage). The way he designed his programme is pure badass.
+bachadmirer he has no fear and can play all the hard passage so relax. that alone should make the other pianists afraid of him. they know he will be play his best all the time.
+Liu Cheang I must agree with that Liu, He is very passionate and an excellent pianist! He plays from the heart and has remarkable technical Ability. This Artist has a future in Classical Music... no doubt about it! I like his style! However I do prefer Aimi Kobayashi's renditions to his.
I was astonished as I found myself so deeply moved by his funeral march: it was not only beautiful and artistic but feels like the profound philosophy also. Sublime. Dignity. True aspect of humanity and cosmos. Wow.
The way he interprets music is so true and sincere, not too overindulgent and not too stiff, just in service of the music. No exaggerated movements, just movements for musical effects. His touch is very sensitive and rooted. Stable technique. I love his playing so much.
Great performance! Magnificent creativity and emotional transmission... He plays totally from the heart. This is so evident in his stance and touch. Wonderful sonata Mr. Seong. Beautifully done, Bravo!
I think no one on the podium in 2021 came close to SJC nor Eric Lu. They all sounded very similar... I loved Cateen but he was excluded on the semifinal
It feels like he's playing to pay tribute to Chopin's life and music, not just to participate in a competition. I wonder what drives him to embody the music so totally.
When I first heard Chopin's second sonata, I was really terrified of this because it resembles death a lot and it scares me. But his playing made me realize this is beautiful after all. Chopin turned the pain and sadness of losing someone into a piece of music. Such a depth and control, Cho! The marching section is smooth and soft, if this was played on a funeral, I think it would please a human soul for such a beautiful farewell. My comment on this is, a bit terrifying but a beautiful one. Expressing the love and remembrance for someone, great masterpiece of a genius!
15:50 good memories fade away, your dream comes to an end and you wake up to the reality. The finale part is what the person who's dead wakes up to. Magnificent and very visual performance.
If you listen to this without watching it, you won't believe that he is a just 21!!! I love Chopin, thus I have listen to many great pianists' playing like you guys here. Well, judging from the fact that he is just 21, I can clearly see him as one of legendary pianists. He made a history!!! Huge Congrats!!! :) :) :) (He a lso made me leave comments- it's my very first time to do that!! )
Every piece of music he selected for this competition was for the winning strategy I am sure that is plus to be a winner. Interpretation and skill and God given talent shows everything.
I'm amazed that I have to agree with Basswood just below. Like many here I've studied and PLAYED the piece very well. And I too have heard many hundreds of fine performances of the work but this is the most sensitive, deeply expressive and stunningly virtuosic rendition I've ever heard. Every detail of every phrase is finely-wrought, and played with complete control, loving care and the greatest of ease. That said, there were NO "bad" pianists in this competition. ALL are wonderful, and ALL have something unique and marvelous to share. The judges might as well have blindfolded themselves and played "eeny meeny miny mo" before swooping down blindly with a pin on the list of contestants. But THIS is extraordinarily good, and remarkably TOUCHING. These dear children show much greater UNDERSTANDING than let of the Old Boys ever did.
People get more knowledge of these pieces as time goes by, there are always new young interpreters, and too many interpretations. I hope I grow up to be a good musician
wow, just wow... the third movement was absolutely beautiful! In my opinion the third movement is one of Chopin's most beautiful works and is the best movement in this sonata. This interpretation is so so good, I can imagine this is exactly how Chopin would have played it. Well done :)
i think it's absolutely amazing what raw power and beauty he is able to get out of the Steinway (i had the same impression with his prelude cycle) - for me, this is the way a piano should sound, when you can almost hear what it's physically made of, the metal strings and the wood
He plays with all his heart, all his soul. Amazing that people can love this music also on the opposite side of the world. The final concert was even better...
+basswood100 Then clearly there are some important ones you have never heard. It is good playing, no question. But atleast say who you have heard before making such a statement. But you are not alone, so many people make statements like this. And Horowitz, Rachmaninoff, Michelangeli (live), and just a few others would likely be ones that this pianist himself would agree he looks up to. Yes, this is a very fine performance - but whenever anyone says "best" or "best I've heard" - their background of which performances they have heard or previously liked should be cited.
+basswood100 ...you ever heard where? if in 2015 Chopin Competition maybe (maybe) I could be agree with you. If you are talking in absolute terms, I would advice you to listen to Rachmaninoff and/or Michelangeli interpretations (for example) or Pollini playing the same Sonata at Chopin 1960.. But usually people who shot statements like your is uncultured (musically speaking, no offence).
+sirdicaudore your comment is very smart instead, uh? your comparisons do not hold up: what you are talking about is referring to personal tastes. They change from people to people, of course. I think +classicalalways comment is correct (and polite, understand?)
Bravo! He's shown awesome performance in all rounds including priliminary session. To me,but this is one of his best and shows why he's winner. Thank you for your intense concentration which creates beautiful and almost perfect music Now you gain a tremendous fame when yong. Hope you march your rest of your life ever faithfully as you have, so that every world can listen to your music for long.
On gra całym sercem, całą duszą...
There are healing power, convincing communication, traction of thought, challenging in conflict, emotional support & encouragement, comfort, and relaxation in Seong-Jin Cho's performance.
Clearly superior to the other competitors, no one of them reached such level of technical skill and expressive ability. P.D. It's been 6 years and another Chopin Competition, but this and other performances by Seong-Jin Cho are still the best.
@Konstantin Ridaya well, She could get 3rd due to the standing ovation even with several annoying mistakes in her concerto. She was kinda wonky in many parts, actually. But her expressivities were getting better and lively in later part. So,that's fair enough for her. Not scandalous at all!Every participants could expect Cho to be the winner from the first round,Iv heard. So, I think you can face the music now!😊
There are so many ways to play the presto. So many ways to accentuate. It's hard to tell which interpretation is the best. But sure, with this peace Chopin was 100 years in front.
Congratulations your victory ! As a Korean, I'm very proud of you . I'm moved to your expression. You are the best👍🏻
GENIUS OF THE PIANO !!! Dokladnie tak !!! To nie tylko jakze inna interpretacja Chopina, Cho rozumie wspaniale instrument, to prawdziwy dar u pianistow !!! Naprawde, to wole go solo. Cho jest za dobry aby go orkiestra zagluszala. Hahahaha.... Ogolnie to wole Kate i Charlsa w Chopinie. Oni graja Chopina bardziej po polsku, po slowacku !!! Cho zrobil cos zupelnie innego i wygral konkurs swoja perfekcja pianisty !!!! Nieprawdopodobny TALENT !!! REPLY
