This should silence, indeed stagger, pianophiles who consign Cho to a lower tier of Warsaw winners than Argerich, Pollini or Cho’s mentor Zimerman. Take just one Prelude - not the 24th, that erupts under Cho’s transcendental technique, but the “easy” 4th in e minor. Have you ever heard this piece played more beautifully? Even by Cherkassky, Cortot or Novaes at New York’s Town Hall. Cho turns the two minute Prelude into a Pushkin novel of loss and bewilderment as pure and poetic as a Lensky - or a Seong-Jin Cho. Zimerman spotted a winner even before the judges’ verdict. Thanks for posting.

Well said. Couldn't agree more. The 4th isn't technically demanding but so challenging to express fully and in a controlled manner. This is why Cho's interpretation stands out.

Summary: You were deeply moved! Apologies but I'm not inclined towards the endless ranking of geniuses. Seems pointless to me. The most sublime of arts goes beyond this. Koreans would love your analysis to a man. As do many from the various nations as regards their fellow countryman but this entirely misses the point of this art which of all the arts points towards transcendence of such nonsense as microscopic matters such as ethnicity and race in the midst of a vast mysterious universe. Listen to the music folks and leave aside your deeply engrained materialism.

@@profelimofficial...En mi opinión, pienso que no me atrajo su enfoque. Rebuscado! Nada espontáneo! Un preludio ideal para un pianista de jazz tipo Bill Evans! @@ShadowShinobi108 I think Dang Thai Son's ending is clearer. I also like his dynamics better than Cho's tbh. I still really like and enjoy his rendition. Cho ended it with some of the notes in the run sustained together with the accented D making it sound like a thunder. It just sounds different to others'. An incredible journey into the heart of Chopin, somewhat like the Winterreise from Schubert. Such an immense variety of emotions, of colours. I love Cho's rendering, full of subtlety and finesse. His phrasing is quite personal with a lot of rubato, but he never sounds of ill taste. On the contrary he conjures an almost 20th century atmosphere with all the dissonances highlighted. A milestone performance.

One could spend hours in any one of these interpretations, liquid, effervescent, and at times vanishing into thin air, leaving you breathless. And while each interpretation is decidedly uncommon, like the near dissonance of the second prelude, Cho pulls you into the music, allows you to join him in exploring anew a Chopin you thought you knew. Brilliant and gifted, a refreshing thoughtful talent that brings even deeper grace to and already graceful Chopin repertoire.

Yes. he sometimes slows down for rubatos more than I wouòd do, but this is I accept because he wants to give a particular significance to the notes he èlays, he rtecreates the work in his own mind and this is what an interpreter should do.
