Preventing separation anxiety is critical to your AussieDoodle Puppy’s development. We can’t be with our dogs 24/7; however, we can help them be more comfortable during the times when we’re not not with them. Here are some do’s and don’ts to prevent separation anxiety.
Many breeds, especially Poodles, have been bred to be loyal companions. They stick to their family at all times. If you’ve done your homework, you already know that most Aussie Doodles, SheepaDoodles and BerneDoodles suffer from separation anxiety to some degree. Many poodles, especially mini sized, can suffer from separation Anxiety. To get a Doodle to be happy to be locked in a crate, while you wander off, will take a ton of counter conditioning. You’ll have to un-do what has been bred into these dogs for hundreds of years. And remember, your puppy has never been alone. It’s been with it’s litter mates and us humans all the time. Leaving them alone in the crate, can put them into a panic, to a point they won’t ever want to be in the crate again.
The good news is that you can help your puppy though this scary time, and in the end, you’ll have a dog who sticks to their family like glue. Many of our AussieDoodle owners tell us they can walk their dog off leash by the age of one - two years old.
Watch this video to see how professional dog trainer, Wendy Taylor from “Life of Riley”, helps me condition Humphrey to go into his crate on his own. Before this session, Humphrey would not go into his crate without being pushed in, and would not settle when the door was closed. He barks incessantly, and his bark is quite piercing to the ears. OUCH! This is just the first of many training sessions that Humphrey will need, but you can see how quickly Wendy gets results. Reading articles, watching videos, and following Wendy’s techniques below, will certainly help you teach your puppy to be comfortable in the crate. But if you’re not successful, you should have your own dog trainer help you. Professional dog trainers do this day in and day out. They know all the tricks. But remember, you’re the one who must do the work to shape your puppy’s behavior into the perfect dog.

If you socialise dogs every week (or have a pair of animals, and do this from when they are puppies, and., don't foster and project a neurotic dependency onto the dog you won't see separation anxiety

The idea of high value treats is an important point. Owner/trainers should use this idea to their advantage. My go-to treats are healthy; my high value treats, maybe not so much :)

I've watched this so many times. And STILL get excited when Humphrey offers to go into the crate the first time hahaha.

Thank you for another Awesome pursuit! The education you offer is outstanding for owners of Aussiedoodles or any other breed. This lesson is so important, for even puppies that don't have separation anxiety! I think crate training is often misunderstood. For separation anxiety issues in particular, you tried to make it clear, but it's really important that viewers understand that this process requires constant and consistant reenforcement for the duration, i.e., however long it takes for your puppy to relax into it. Speaking from experience, it takes days, if not weeks, but it is so worth it in the long run. Understanding the puppy's point of view is paramount, and patience is everything :)

Did you ever do a follow up of this video? If not, how did you achieve your goal of actually leaving? Thanks.

No I never did another video. But more of the same training and Hump did great. I start by leaving the room for short periods of time and coming back just before I think he's going to break. Extend from there.

I just adopted an Aussie doodle yesterday, and he really has separation anxiety and I’m definitely going to try this. Mine is 10 months old

Great Lesson- Do you crate your dogs every time you leave the house? I got my dog at 6 years old, and he wasn’t mat trained. I was told he was crate trained, but he had a large travel crate and would still do his business in the crate. Then walk in it- Ugh- TY

Joy to you and me yes they have to be in the crate when they are unsupervised, up until the time they can be completely trusted . We don't leave a puppy for very long. If your 6 year old dog poops in the crate, that means he was probably forced to do so before you got him.

So what happens if you for some reason don't have any treats?

I have seen most trainers also use gushing verbal praise along with treat and clicker. Most dogs really want approval. I have seen service dogs being rewarded with toy play for doing tasks. They will use treats and whatever toy (often a ball) and celebratory praise (YES! or Good boy!) to reward.

Why the clicker?
@biljanas7931
@biljanas7931 3 года назад
yes, what is the benefit of it - although I must say I was expecting and looking forward to hear click after a while, liked the sound of it :) lol or I got trained well

He will learn that the clicker is a positive reward for doing what is asked of him. It's in gradual steps. Clicker combined with treats, then gradually and intermittantly, he may get just clicker.
