Sephiroth Changes The Past!? | My Big Insane Final Fantasy 7 Remake Theory (Part 2 / Rebirth)

This is my complete, insane, all in Theory for what I believe will happy in Final Fantasy 7 Remake, or as I have a theory they will call it: Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. The rebirth of our characters by Sephiroth using the power of destiny and the planet to rewrite new angles of our beloved characters backstorys. From witnessing a Red XIII / Seto invasion of the Gi tribe. Marlene dying before Barrett can reach her. Aerith walking in the shoes of her Cetra ancestors. Hojo and Vincent battling for the outcome of Sephiroth great plan. Cloud attempting to save his mother Claudia and Aerith from their fates. A nightmare begins theory where Sephiroth has the power to walk into these past moments, moments set in stone by OG and tempt our characters with false hope of salvation. Of all the Peasant theory vids for FF7 Remake, I love this theory because it would keep the story, lore and ending beats of OG FF7 all in place. While allowing Zack lives, or Biggs, Jessie alive 'what if' scenarios to play, without jeopardizing the overall story. This is my best guess for what Square Enix have in store for us in part 2 and I feel would really fit the theme of the Nibelheim section of the story. The reaction from fans would be another terrified mixed bag but I feel the theme of Vincent / chaos nightmare walking from his coffin, to counter the new power of Sephiroth. Could build up to an amazing, trippy showdown that would be a great ending for part 2 or 'rebirth'. Or Temple of the Ancients for an epic Aerith vs Sephiroth ideology battle about the Cetra. Square Enix really opened the floodgates on the FF7 Remake story, could this be the kinda direction they commit to going forward? God damn I'm thirst for a part 2 trailer to get some semblance of clue here! XD

I’ve always felt so bad for Sephiroth. That DOES NOT MEAN I excuse what he did... but it does mean that I understand and sympathize with him... If he ever returns in the future of the series I hope he has a change of heart... I have a lot of love and care for his type of character... He is literally human Mewtwo, and nothing can change my mind.

I don't believe the outcome will be changed at all, but I do believe everything else about this comment is 100% true. The outcome in terms of who lives/ dies, the fate of the planet, and the mythos around the game meta-textually will still be exactly the same, I expect. Aerith still dies, the fate of the planet is uncertain, and the ambiguity of what happened will be a source of speculation and contention for for years to come.

I love how everyone thinks that Sephiroth wants the story to pan out the same way that it did in the past. You know with him getting killed over and over again because of a blonde chocobo that is struggling just as much as he is. I find it interesting that when me and a few people on Facebook discussed theories everyone was surprised when I brought this up: Sephiroth opens the Crossroads of Destiny for us, he even cuts down a few whispers...so I asked them if he wants the game to play out the same way why does he keep interfering with the Whispers when all he has to do is sit back and let the Whispers keep interfering. At the Edge of Creation when Cloud was having a Jenova attack why did Sephiroth take his arm and stop the attack instead of letting Jenova have her way with Cloud's mind mold him for Reunion. It seems to me that Sephiroth is trying to make a change to the flow of destiny...he knows Cloud has a better chance of changing things then anyone else because he cherishes everything (he said so in Advent Children). Cloud also told Sephiroth that he looked up to him once and Sephiroth kind of threw it off with a humph like you fool but he was still listening. Cloud looked up to him before he fell, wanted to be like him...and the more I played the Dissidia the more I felt Sephiroth's words were always to guide Cloud to, help him because no offense to Cloud but he is not a people person at all...honestly someone needs to count over all the canon material where Cloud has a regular conversation with someone that is more than a few words and I bet you will find that he talks with Sephiroth even more than he talks with all his friends and allies.

Hey Pez, just finished a Japanese playthrough of the game. Probably the biggest shift for me was when Aerith says, "And you, you're wrong." The word is more like mistaken. Not like he shouldn't exist. As for where the next game could end I'm hoping Nibelhiem flashback to Nibelhiem proper. I'd also be okay with Junon or the boat ride to Costa Del Sol if they add like Modeohiem or something to the map. Ultimately, I hope they take their time and give us a good, segmented world and then spoil us when we get the Highwind by giving us access to all those segments, connected in an open world.

This idea might suck, but I was inspired by your theory on expanded player choice, and just had to throw this out there: You know how Remake has an invisible relationship counter that changes certain scenes and team compositions based on the players' interactions with other characters? What if, rather than reward the player, a future installment punishes the player by hurting (or perhaps even killing off) party members that have the highest karmic standing/highest point value with Cloud? I realize this would probably be a nightmare to implement, but it would be a fresh way to surprise the player and bring out similar emotions to Aerith dying in the OG. Again, I realize this probably would be too ambitious, but I just had to get it out there.

Actually, this could be possible in the final part of the Remake if it were done say in the final battle. Different Characters are sacrificed or give their lives based on Clouds affinity with them. This would only change the final cut scenes which could possibly be doable and definitely be a shock to all players.

You know, having a 4 hours shoot could mean different things: 1. it could be a batch of different scenes with Sephiroth, but not continual. 2. it could only be a 10 min scripts, but shooting it with differents actor's play and redoing the shot could amount ot a 4h shoots. 3. Everything technical, if the actors needs to play with the environements, do several takes could also amount to a 4h shoot.

Actual translation of Sephiroth's words at edge of creation. "Careful now, from this moment the future does not yet exist." Description of arbiter... basically tells us this isn't a remake but a sequel. The world preview tells us that the entire compilation happened, zack died, etc. Then.. things changed. You changed things. Zack is alive, people survived the plate fall despite 2015's "the kids are alright" definitively tells us nobody survived it, it was completely crushed (but we know it isn't completely crushed it didn't land flat), etc. We also have sephiroth jumping months into the future to absorb meteor...which he hasn't summoned yet... to regain memories and essence that he hasn't yet sacrificed....etc.
@Koniving
@Koniving 3 года назад
Far as the past, if you pay attention to how the whispers do things across dirge, crisis, the books, and remake... they interact directly. Look for coincidences, amazing conveniences, mentions of howls or cries of the planet, and direct references to disembodied whispering. Now, take note where the whispers are. If they're making sure Zack does they'd be surrounding him. They are instead within the forces against him, traveling around and through them. Furthermore, with brazen evidence of two separate and conflicting Sephiroth's at play, what would you need to stop an even more powerful threat? A real hero. Cloud, the imitation, is no longer sufficient. We also had sephiroth-cloud throughout remake rather than Zack Cloud. "Cloud, you're scaring me." Cloud's eyes become more green during events when he is acting less like cloud, such as trying to kill Johnny and Reno.

Pez's idea about playing the past for the characters and changing the past is interesting but I don't see how Sephy can do that. I mean it would make sense him making Cloud relive it and making Cloud think he changed at least the part of his mother dying, but the others I don't see how Sephy could do it to them because the difference between Cloud and the others is Sephy's cells. Cloud has them but the others don't. The part where it looks like Zack's fate being changed could more be that of the Whispers being affected by Sephy. But that's not him sending anyone back into the past. Now I know someone might pointed out that Sephy might've sent himself into the past which is why we have remake, but Sephy has Genova cells and he's spend a lot of time in the lifestream. Two things that no one else has. Next you might point out that Aerith seems to be acting like she's from the future too. But my counter to that is that one. She's and ancient and two. there's a chance that future Aerith is more working through her past self by sending memories back, not her actual self. Sephy and Aerith are two very different people from the rest of the cast. They both have a thing that could make sending themselves back in some form possible while the rest don't have such things. Now Seph could still use this trick on Cloud by making him relive the past and think that he's changed things only for Cloud to later find out it's all a lie, thus pushing him into despair and making him more moldable for Sephy. But like I said, outside of this working on Cloud I don't see how Sephy could send the others back in time to those moments in their lives to get them to try to change things. Also in the case of Cid, given the fact that we know he loves her, I would more believe that Cid would get Shera into that area of the rocket to fix the thing that she realized needed fixing rather than just going "Fuck that woman! Space here I come!" because present day Cid, although upset about not getting to space has grown to love her and that would keep him from actually doing anything that would make her die in the past.
@LindsayTotty
@LindsayTotty 3 года назад
What if Sephiroth doesn't actually send the rest of the cast to the past but just shows them illusions that make them think they're in the past? He lulls them into a state of believing they (and by extension the player) can change the past so that we ensure Aerith lives and allows Sephiroth's plan to succeed?
@darkoraclegirl4570
@darkoraclegirl4570 3 года назад
@@LindsayTotty Interesting but we are still left with the question of how he could do this. It's one thing to project his image over the failed copies of him but another entirely for him to create full illusion for the others? To say nothing of the question of how Sephy would know about their past enough to create a realistic illusion for each of them that their minds would accept it and actually think they were in the past? Outside of Cloud and Tifa Sephy wasn't there for any of the others worst moments. Hell Vincent's happened before he was even born. Your idea is very interesting though raises some questions on how it could be possible. We know Jenova can access the memories of people, as she did with the Ancients when she was killing them off, but in order to do so she must first infect them with her cells. So if Sephy were to do this he would first have to infect the others with Jenova cells. Though I must admit, that idea does prove thought provoking and open new paths for Sephy to go after the group.

From Tifa’s perspective it’s been 7 years since she saw Cloud, which is when he left to join Soldier. So that’s why Tifa responds with “huh?” when Cloud says it’s been 5 years.

He says after “Time enough for you, perhaps” or something which leads me to believe Cloud will be put in a situation in the future where He and two others are in a predicament in which they have 7 seconds to escape. That is time enough for Cloud to escape and probably enough time for him to save one other person (Tifa maybe), leaving the other person to die (could be a new spin of Aerith’s death).

I get so emotional watching this theory with the music in the background and I get so many ideas of my own! I like your theories, great job :) The way you gone about it doesn't invalidate the original storyline, since that happened and now it is changing, because Sephiroth somehow... can, I like it a lot. So I wonder if the story takes us through Crisis Core, FF7, AC and Dirge of Cerberus and after that final scene that forever will bug me, when Genesis gets Weiss' body, could it be that this actually leads to what is happening in the FF7 Remake? Just an idea I would really love somehow... though I wouldn't know how that happens or what they are doing... I also can imagine that the story will explore all those hardships and the need to change it, the need to make it best for everyone with the final result that Cloud, or maybe Aerith as a new protagonist ends up alone, because everyone has their happy lifes and no reason to fight Sephiroth or to restore the original timeline that is tragic but necessary. Maybe it's not that they try to change it and it just goes worse (classic butterfly effect - though I really like both ideas), but it is fine and they just stay in their happy new timeline and it's about them breaking free, breaking out of that perfect happy ending for them, to achieve a greater goal, namely saving the planet. And it's really us that questioned the past, why does Aerith have to die, why Zack? We don't want that but... it is what we have to make happen in the end and it's going to be emotional, maybe we have to kill Aerith with our own hands in the end, or at least watch her die, because it has to be, instead of not letting her go all alone, instead of rushing after her to be in time to save her. Accepting loss will probably be a major theme and maybe even Vincent, after two games and one film and I don't know how many years can finally let go of Lucrecia. (And maybe she can stop apologizing too ;) ) And as a final note to invalidate my seriousness: I just realized... Vincent being with Lucrecia would kiiinda be bad for Sephiroth, because that would mean he eventually never got born? He's like, oh yeah, change it to your happy endi--- wait, no, nonono *fades out*

I could almost picture a controller cheat code like they had in OG for the chocobo race, hold R1, R2, L1, L2 and never run out of energy.

I'll arrange my theories in descending order of certainty, using some speculation from Pez and more from my impression of the story. Certain= 1) Anything that looks like it has been changed for the better, Sephiroth will revert or make worse. He's bringing Cloud despair in hopes of making him an ally. "See how hopeless it is and how much of a failure you are?" 2) Aerith still dies, but this happens after the player is given false hope she can be saved. 3) Most everything is done in the Remake canon to make the same things happening a second time seem surprising to old fans. What happened to Zack? What happened in Nibelheim? What's Sephiroth after? What does the ending mean? Etc. But some new changes will be made- minor changes- to cause doubt and uncertainty in the player. Mostly Certain= 1) The party will encounter old characters who don't remember them. 2) Dyne is alive and looking for his daughter in Remake Part 2. Barret will have mixed feelings about this. 3) The Nibelheim incident will be made into something controversial in the world of the game. Some will swear that Sephiroth is a hero who went missing in action. Many will believe (falsely) that Wutai instigated a conspiracy or was somehow behind the disaster. Suspicious= 1) Players will be made uncertain about whether Sephiroth is a good or bad guy. 2) Cloud's mom is alive, because: 3) Instead of a memory, the Nibelheim incident will unfold in the present day, with Cloud under the impression things can be changed. The same result will occur, therefore the intention of the scene is to foreshadow the false hope the player feels for improving the game's ending. Ultimately, everything you can expect in the next games is, as Kitase said, going to be the same as it was. The only differences now are going to be in how we arrive at that conclusion. The goal of the changes is to make the game more exciting (as I believe they have) for old and new player alike. So every time you read on a bit of speculation about a change, I think you can reasonably expect said change to somehow always have the same result as before. The first game was like this, only the suspicion of things having changed is the fuel for all these new emotions and theories. I personally really like the approach.

When I try to make sense of it all in my head I sort of picture the tesseract from Interstellar. A little different because the events in that movie all happened due to the ending of the movie itself, but the concept of that 4th incomprehensible dimension is what I imagine when I think of Sephiroth bouncing up and down the timeline. It's as easy as walking down the street for him.

Ahahah Pez! This was an amazing video with so many great ideas... But if they are gonna make everything you just said I will turn 120 years old before seeing the end of it!!! The idea I love the most is to have multiple endings depending on the choices we will make during the game. I feel that if they do that it will still follow the OG kinda structure and it will give tons of possibilities to new gameplays. The only big problem I see in that is if the Remake is going to have more than 2 parts, how can they link all your choices together? Maybe it will be something that we will have only in the last part?

Then corridor style section up to Gold Saucer, and story skip straight to Temple of the Ancients. Leaving Vincent and Cid to Part 3 with even more open world travel including vehicles.

Also fun. 2 years later: In the ultimania for remake, at creation's edge, it literally says Sephiroth has frozen time 7 seconds before the planet dies, and is using Jenova's power to manipulate memories to manipulate those of the planet itself. In other words, Sephiroth is specifically manipulating the planet's memories which effectively rewrites history itself. Given that Jenova is an allegory for false gods and capitalism, Midgar is an allegory for western influences on Japan, and Sephiroth represents the Japanese government slowly corrupting under the influence of capitalism, it's interesting that between the original game and the start of remake, the Japanese government was caught lying about and rewriting history to hide a lot of atrocities in World War II; something the West also spent a lot of time covering up and sheltering the imperial family from while selecting scapegoats to take the fall. One such scapegoat was a lover of poetry, and another was a general obsessed with honor and who was bestowed with the dream one day all the asian continents would become a single country; a task he was specifically given by the emperor, but that dream was quickly eroded due to the way the soldiers were raised (in Bushido, those who surrender forfeit their honor; in imperial Japan, the emperor was a God, and the Chinese had no God Emperor, so they were inferior; this culminated in theJapanese Holocaust) and no matter how he tried, the soldiers and their commanders completely ignored him and held no respect because he had little to no combat experience. Any attempts to persuade them to reign their soldiers in so that they don't bring further dishonor was fruitless and eventually he and the other took the sole blame for all that was done. Also from the same period of real life history, there was a research division kept underground that performed all kinds of inhumane experiments on volunteers, prisoners, and even each other when they somehow became infected. These seem awfully familiar, don't they? Sephiroth is rewriting history. There were two soldiers in Sephiroth's shadow, one obsessed with poetry and the other refusing to use his sword while obsessing about dreams and honor. The man Angeal represents, however, was treated much better in Crisis Core as something to aspire to for a new generation; someone who tried to do right. He tried to reign Genesis in. Though he still failed. (If they went more literal, the general was laughed at as he tried to plead and even cried to get them to see reason when anger and commands weren't enough.).

I've been saying since they released the remake and I beat it that I feel like they are going to make the game have more SERIOUS choices in the game instead of who you get to date. This ending for the remake made it a reality that it could either go forward as a huge red herring and fate can never be changed blah blah or they could give us the reigns to make fate ours and make our reality the truth but in turn make multiple endings to the series.

1:40 I agree. *Spoilers for original ff7 just in case* I think the best course of action would be to play through to Vincent have him be the final boss and then him join us in the ending credits. Have red 13 playable throughout and we stop by costa del sol and corel and have a Barrett arc and make yuffie playable in the 2nd half of the game, then we should go to wutai. I think meeting bugenhagen and cosmo canyon should wait for the 3rd game but going there will be on reds mind in the 2nd game.That way everybody will have a significant story arc in the game, while introducing new playable and non playable characters.

I know theyve talked about "bitesized" chunks. But unless we are getting a game every 2-3 years, I think they really need to expand the length of the games. I think its poor for the video game industry to put out 5 different 35 hour games. I enjoyed FF7R for the most part, but it felt too short to me. Id like to see them push the main story, no guides, blind playthrough time to 55-60 hours. This doesnt feel unreasonable when many other JRPGs (DQ11, Trails, Persona, etc) are all putting out games that take 120 hours for the same price. Obviously I know the graphics affect this, but I dont think being HALF as long is too much to ask.

And the other thing is like this could be longer then a trilogy, because assuming they don’t just murder Zach in the beginning of the second game, we still have stuff that they may make us do with him, since he’s not cloud he wouldn’t do the things exactly like him, so there’s plenty of things that could flesh out about 1 game worth of content of just Zack stuff sprinkled throughout the next 2-3 parts, just a thought and obviously it’s dependent on what they do with that but still I think it’s worth mentioning.

After playing the FFVII Remake, I got the feeling that Sephiroth somehow after the events of Advent Children managed to somehow send his consciousness into the past manipulating events to change history. We all saw those shadows trying to keep the flow of time from changing but I believe Sephiroth managed to trick Cloud and team into destroying the keepers of the timeline now allowing Sephiroth to move forward with his plans with nothing to stand in his way. As unlikely as it is, I'm still holding up hope that, after the ending twist, they'll give us a DLC for part one that involves the opening mission playing as Zack with certain details warped due to the alternate timeline. Since they're almost definitely going to touch on Zack's survival in part 2 I think it would help plant seeds for when it comes out without having to play full-price for an entire game especially since they could reuse most of their assets from Part 1.

Holy shit. Someone has to stop this mad man! If Nomura see this video, imagin the cluster f**k he would come up with. (+ I believe Nomura doesn't even speak english, so he would need a translator, which would inevetably lead to translation errors!) But seriously, there are some very interesting thoughts in this. Dunno if I want some of them come true, though. Need to reflect more on this. However, I somewhat am getting the feeling of a greater "evil" approaching. The way how sephiroth talked to cloud at the end of part 1 was... confusing at the very least. How he grabed his hand in order to make his pain stop and how he looked at him afterwards. There was no despise, superiority or joy in his eyes. (Btw. the sound effect of Clouds "pain", in this scene, is the same that the geostigma inflicts on him in Advent Children, if I'm not mistaken. But this time, Seph isn't the one causing it, but stopping it) What does he mean with "Our world will become a part of "it"... one day."? Is he reffering to a cycle that will come to an end? Everyone becoming a part of the life stream? (Why using "world" here? And remember, in OG he actually tries to destory/absorb the world...) Look how he turns away from Cloud to look into space/edge of creation and his facial expression. Like he somewhat cares for Cloud, beyond that of a puppet or tool he still needs. Almost like he views him diffrently now. Like a friendly rival or something? (Could still be some twisted care/love relation) Also, the way how he asks Cloud to join him... Seph doesn't even seriously fights against Cloud once he refuses. It seems more like that Seph realizes that the point of asking him for help isn't there yet. Does he need Cloud to see "it" first? In japanese, Sephiroths last words are quite diffrent from the english translation. Here is a video with a more direct translation: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KbM0Gi5SKTc.html But then again, Aerith says "There's no greater threat to the planet than him". Maybe it's just Nojima/Toriyama/Sephiroth getting in my head. But Sephiroths behaviour felt really weird.

Jokes aside, if they really are going this route of Sephiroth changing everyone's fates, I feel like the biggest plot twist the devs could possibly pull at this point is if he becomes the one who "saves" Aerith. The last thing he'd want is to lead down the same path where Aerith takes over the Lifestream against him. I think that's the widest curve that the writers could pull without drifting too far from the inital story beats.

There are some interesting ideas. The parts I disagree with is that we have not seen Sephiroth with the ability to change memories. He can do illusions of the past which he did to show Cloud bits of what happened but that presentation was in the present. Every memory or premonition we have seen from Cloud is 100% accurate to the OG events (what they saw of Zack was cannon, they didn't see what came after). Sephiroth has ACCESS to Clouds memories because future Sephiroth appears before Cloud every time Cloud has a past memory of him. I predict Cloud will remember Nibelheim similar to the original. The twist could be when they visit Nibelheim in the present, it might be changed due to the past being changed. I don't think Roche is the extra soldier from Nibelheim. I think it is the cloaked man with the 2 on his arm. After their encounter with him, one of the kids says that his dad told him that man used to be a member of Soldier. This fits with the survivors of the Nibelheim incident being turned into cloaked men aka failed Sephiroth clones. I heard somewhere, not sure from one of your videos or somewhere else that the Chapter Select screen could be meta in and of itself. Choosing which Chapter to visit and redo could be the same way Sephiroth and Aerith access the past. Like a nonlinear book. I would love if we got more scenes from Aerith or Sephiroth's POV because we only experience them through Clouds interactions with them. My husband blew my mind when I was telling him your video where you pointed out the visual differences of Nibelheim when Cloud is hovering over it. I didn't consider that remake itself is the alt reality. I wonder if the crew went through a portal to the OG reality where tech is worse and the population is smaller? As for endings. The OG ending IS humanity being wiped out. It might be good to fight against that but there needs to be consequences. Wanting a sugary sweet ending for ff7 is like wanting Game of Thrones to never kill Ned and the Starks live happily ever after. Boo! FF7 was like the Game of Thrones in video games where the deaths were HARSH and unexpected. The remake needs to keep that theme even if it's handled differently. If Aerith dies I want Cloud to be the one to do it (Sephiroth mind control actually worked this time). If she survives I want it to because the future Sephiroth stops the present Sephiroth because the outcome does not work out well for him.
