-A new piece of rare, vintage Mike And The Mad Dog surfaces! This is from barely one year in their time together and they are filling in for Howie Rose on the "Mets Extra" program, something they would certainly never have done in later years. The Mets are in a rain delay, so Bob Murphy throws it to them for over 40 minutes of filler until the game was finally called that evening.
-Mike and Chris interview ex-Mets broadcaster Gary Thorne (there to cover the game for ESPN) and Mets beat writer Howard Blatt. A lot of talk about the Mets fading chances in the NL East race and some VERY inaccurate predictions regarding the eventual World Champion Cincinnati Reds!

LOL, how Thorne described Reds Manager Lou Pinella as the reason why the Reds wont do well in the postseason, basically saying that hes the most nervous person in that Reds club and that its affecting the Reds player. Unreal how Pinella's reputation as a manager changed since he won with the Reds and then with the success he had with the Mariners To be fair, the Reds did struggle in the final month, going 16-16, while the Pirates played great in September and Oakland won 100 games Reds were great in April and May, but then from June till the end of the regular season, they were just a .500 team

Mets lost both games of the doubleheader to the Expos on September 20 at Shea. They also lost the first game of the series to the Expos on September 18. So the Mets got 3-game-swept by the Expos. Mets lost the first game on September 18 when Julio Franco allowed a run in the top of the 9th inning, after the Mets scored 3 runs in the bottom of the 8th inning, to tie the game on a Strawberry 3-run-home-run. Mets lost 4-3 On the first game of the doubleheader against the Expos on September 20, Frank Viola, who won 20 games in 1990, was pitching nicely with the lead heading into the 8th inning, and then he melted down and the Expos scored 4 runs in the inning to take the lead and then win the game. The next Mets pitcher to win 20+ games in a season will be RA Dickey in 2012, which is the season he won the NL Cy Young On the second game of the doubleheader against the Expos, Expos rookie Chris Nabholz pitched a complete-game-one-hitter-shut-out-gem, and the Mets got swept. Mets were still very much in the NL East race after September 20; they were just 2 games behind the Pirates in the loss column, and they also would play the Pirates in the final 3 games of the regular season. But the Pirates just played great in September, winning 20 games And unreal to think that Frank Viola in 1990, and RA Dickey in 2012, are the last two Mets pitchers to win 20+ games in a season (as of the end of the 2022 season). And with the way pitchers are handled in today's game, maybe the last Mets ever to win 20+ games

Thorne, Mike and Chris really nailed the Red's having no chance to win the WS.

I’m a lifelong Reds fan that World Series was awesome. True story Game 1 my buddies there they go to their seats & they see 1990 Astros manager Art Howe sitting seat next to them. So of course they said hello & my buddies weren’t sure they said “Art what do you think of the Reds chances.” I swear Howe looked them & said “love their chances they’ve been the best team all year & I believe they will beat the A’s.

Mets were .5 games behind the pirates at the time of this game. Mets were in the middle of a 5 game losing streak where they would go from .5 to 3.5 games out and they would never recover.

Sadly, Mets from 1984 to 1990 frustrated me alot with their second places finish, asides from 86 and 88

Sadly, Mets from 1984 to 1990 mostly finished second in their division, asides from 86 and 88. And it would feel meh to make playoffs in 1990 without Keith and Carter

@hmhm856
@hmhm856 Год назад
To be fair, they faced the Bonds-Pirates team and the LaRussa-Athletics teams, and those teams really underperformed in the postseason in their "era". Reds would have been done if they had faced the Mets in the NLCS or the RSOX in the WS.
@PrinceTron1
@PrinceTron1 Год назад
@@hmhm856 I'm not a Reds fan. But how can you say that the Reds would have been done if they faced a Mets team that underperformed winning the NL.East over the Pirates? How do you know whether any of the key Mets wouldn't have underperformed in an NLCS against the Reds or any other team? The bottom line is we'll never know, the Reds beat the Pirates and beat the A's to win it all that season.
@patrickgray5633
@patrickgray5633 5 месяцев назад
@PrinceTron1 as a Reds fan thank you can't assume anything. True story 2 of my buddies were at Reds A's Game 1 1990 World Series. By pure luck Astros manager Art Howe had seats next to them. In pregame they said "Art do the Reds have a chance." Howe told them both "Watch the Reds are gonna shock the world & win this series."

So Tony Peña was starting some drama in the RSOX clubhouse to try to spice things up. RSOX and BlueJays were tied with each other after September 18 for the AL East
