Sequential Prophet-10 rev 4 first impressions from INIT patch. No talking!

I received my Sequential Prophet-10 rev 4 (caps removed) yesterday, and within an hour, I made this video. I wanted to see what sounds I could get to on my first impression. This is how I judge a synthesizer.
There's a shortage of videos for the new Prophet showing patch creation and raw unprocessed sound. Most videos have been a scroll thru of presets and playing classic songs and riffs. Not this one! IMHO, that doesn't show off what a synthesizer is capable of. So in this one, I hit the INIT and just wander around from there, covering as many features as possible while listening to the raw output. Based on other videos, I was skeptical, but the results were surprising.
Like all my videos, there is only the raw unprocessed sound, straight from the mono output into my Speck mixer at unity and into the RME soundcard.

The sound that starts happening around 20:04 is awesome! So many possibilities in such a “simple” synth.

Agreed. I've owned almost all Dave Smith synths, and while this is the "simplest" in architecture, I find it the most immediate for tone. I wasn't expecting that.

Frick the raw sounds so good, just the oscillators and filters are so fricken amazing

I agree. I was instantly shocked at how this just jumps out of the speakers. I have lots of other synths; none have shocked me like this with their immediacy. Its like there's something magic about the imprecise VCO's through VCF's and VCA's--- all in Mono

@@Manmademadman that’s how I judge synths . Straight up raw sound. VCOs->VCFs-> VCAs , mind you I heard the rev 4s have digital envelopes. But I don’t care. I have one on order already. I have an original prophet 10 with the two tiers and an obxa, and a minimoog, those are my “big” synths, then a prophet 6, OB6 and I have to say , the raw sound of this rev4 prophet 10, is different than mine, but in a good way. Not as dull. What type of synths do you have?

@@synthdude7664 too damn many, but mostly analog! This is weird to say, but I've owned most every synth except a Prophet-5. Today I have a Moog One 16v, Grandmother, Matriarch, Minimoog, Sequential Pro-2, Rev2, OB-6, Oberheim Two Voice Pro, Xpander, Roland Jupiter-X and System-8, Virus TI2, Cwejman S1 mk2, Nord Grand and Modular, Kurzweils (obviously) and MFB Dominion I, and tons of Eurorack. Over the summer I sold a CS-80 and ARP2600, both amazing unicorn vintage pieces that I couldn't justify keeping. I've owned and sold two Prophet-6's, which were great, but didn't inspire me like the new P10. I feel like the ones that I keep make me make music each in different ways. I might have a problem.

@@synthdude7664 Haha. Love it, obviously. While having two of the same mono synths might be a PITA for some, i like the idea. I have it almost always on the same-ish sound, then panned for stereo. Its another synth that jumps out of the speakers. I use it like nothing else I own, making a new sound for every song. The SEM brightness helps it howl, I suspect.

Awesome. I hope it helped you decide. No one does Synth demo's like this, so I do it for people to hear what it sounds like minus opinion and without being drowned in compression/eq/reverb

yeah wow some really interesting and fresh tones coming out of this..you touched upon many unique aspects that I did not know about..like the stepping on the frequency pots! You got some very digital type sounds out of it too... Special synth indeed...

Love this demo! Couldn't agree with you more, RAW and unprocessed is how a demo should be so we know what the beast really sounds like when dialing it in. THE GOOD, THE BAD, THE UGLY! Had SN's #88 & #518 of the P5s. Both are similar to his with a light color. Would love to see someone stain theirs dark and see the outcome.

I agree. There is no reason I can think of to chase the older versions; this replaces them all, and then some with added MIDI, both filters, and upgraded power supply.

Lovely tone... really sounds just like a Prophet 5. Do you find yourself leaning towards one filter type more than another? And where do you find yourself setting the vintage knob?

Its a tough question. After the first 24 hours with it, I find the v3 filter to be brighter and crispier, while the v1/2 is more guttural and deep. Both overdrive in interesting ways, as you can hear. I mostly have the oscillators at 10, as with most of my synths. It just ends up punchier and has more dynamic range. Also, I find the resonance has a different response on each type, and while they are similar, they aren't exactly the same. Flipping between filters shows this pretty quickly.

Vintage knob: for now, its right in the middle, straight up, between 2 and 3... Its rarely at either extreme 1 or 4.

Hey do you hear that staticky noise when playing low notes with the filter closed? I can hear it on your unit and mine sounds the same. I think it’s just the analog noise but curious if you’ve noticed it. Once the filter opens up a bit it goes away

@@Manmademadman @5:24 in your vid. It’s not bad at all but sometimes on my unit when playing low pads with similar filter cutoff it’s pretty prominent especially with long releases where the noise rings out

It’s definitely something I can live with but wanted to see if other units had it. My sub37 has a similar noise when playing low filtered notes. Just the sound of the amp I believe

@@HorrorCue Yeah, this is the VCA being triggered, opening, then closing quickly. We hear it because everything else gets filtered out but the transients in the first milliseconds.

Is the Prophet 10 worth the extra money over the 5?

Its a legitimate topic. I have the 10, so I don't know what its like to "only" have 5 voices, but on long pads and strings, the envelopes don't die off with normal playing. If you are using the P5 for staccato basslines, arps, and tite percussion, I would imagine you could never tell the difference. So far the music I've used this on hasn't "needed" the extra 5 voices, but I notice it with sounds with long decay/releases. There is some argument on the forums about a voice mode to limit the p10 to 5 voices so that they intentionally cut off, but that has yet to be responded to. Also, it would be great to use the p10 bi-timbrally like the original p10; no word from Dave about that yet.

Great demo and sounds! I'm going to respectfully disagree that all demos should be recorded clean though. Clean is necessary in order to hear the tone/timbre for comparison purposes, but to engage the listener you need to add some reverb/delay/etc and get the synth (and passion) moving.
