... And Sam was worried about her Mother's reaction to becoming a grandmother. Well, this episode AND SOMETHING MAKES THREE proves she would he very glad to become a grandmother. BUT, when Endora found out that Tabitha was a witch in NOBODY'S PERFECT, she became a doting grandmother. 😀 She can't stop teaching Tabitha witchcraft, which drives Darrin nuts. And when Adam asks his dad if he'd like to see him fly? That was like a punch in the gut. 😀 But that's where Sam stepped in and pointed out that it's important to nurture a child's talents. She also pointed out to Darrin that a witchlet can be trained when to use or not to use her abilities. That's a mother speaking and Sam and Liz were/are wonderful mothers.
@@moxie96 no, Darrin’s mom asked Serena if she was Sam’s cousin on her mother’s or father’s side and Serena said “her father’s.” Arthur is Endora’s brother.
I believe Samantha AND Serena were still expecting Elizabeth's son when they made this episode, so Serena, of course, must keep herself draped in a big mink coat ...
Interesting that Samantha and Serena act like they haven't seen each other since they were children here, yet in later episodes Serena pops in with stunning regularity.
Also it's interesting that, as witches, they grew up and aged at all. Because if you live forever, as is implied in the series, do you get incredibly old and decrepit over time?
I have several cousins that I haven't seen in 40 years, and a cousin or 2 that I haven't seen in at least 20 years but are now a bit closer. Life happens.
Serena was Elizabeth Montgomery's idea and it gave her a chance to spice things up. Did it ever! For me, something else that was a hoot, and key to the series, for people who couldn't stand "what's his name", except Aunt Clara and maybe Uncle Arthur, they sure hung out at their house a lot. Sam brought up the subject that, being married to her did bring its own problems with her family. Despite that, as Sam told her mother, on multiple occasions, that nothing she does is going to break them up. Endora never took the advice of the ancient warlock of the mountain who warned, It doesn't pay to interfere with ones in-laws." How true. 🙂
In the "Bewitched" book by Herbie J. Pilato, the inspiration for Serena came from EM, who stated that she was getting a little bothered with Samantha being so nice all the time - she reportedly loved all the episodes featuring Serena, because she was so wild and loose, and EM could have more fun playing her as well-
@@02chevyguy Serena would flirt with Larry but the real "fun" was between Montgomery and her husband William Asher (the show's producer) who reportedly checked into a hotel after a day of filming with Montgomery still wearing Serena's wig.
@@dannycarrington1601 The year before Bewitched debuted, Asher and Sidney Sheldon co-created "The Patty Duke Show". So Bill may have had a thing for identical cousins who were different as night and day.
This was "Serena's" first appearance in the series [1/12/66]. She's more "sedate", and quite different than the "hippie" she'd eventually become by 1968 (more exaggerated and "freaky"). Eve Arden's guest appearance as the nurse was more than a year before starring in her third series, "THE MOTHERS-IN-LAW" (1967-'69).
Barry...I loved Serena being outlandish...the more sedate doesn't really suit her personality. The "groovy" Serena was more exagerated for the times this was written for.
@@02chevyguy I always thought Eve Arden was a lot like a girl that I went to school with, same wisecracks, not the girl everyone followed around, but one of the more visible hanger-on types. Unfortunately, when I saw her at our 20 years high school reunion I found she had met and married a really obnoxious guy...or at least that was how he presented himself there. He, and another husband of a classmate, had a running disagreement with the management at the restaurant where we ate dinner. Her husband didn't like having to get up every time he wanted a beer so he hoarded unopened bottles under their table. I always enjoy seeing Eve's name in the credits at the start of a movie, I know that I will probably stay with the film to the end.
Do yourself a favour: watch Mildred Pierce. Eve Arden almost steals the film. Then, read the book. Eve Arden's role is a portmanteau of two characters from the book. The film is fantastic, but, thanks to the Code, the book is better. There is also another Joan Crawford film "Goodby My Fancy" co-staring Eve, which is a great film for a rainy Sunday afternoon, if not quite up to Mildred Pierce.
Yes, it's Eve Arden, she made a career of playing wise-cracking sidekicks in films including "Mildred Pierce" before starring in the film and TV series "Our Miss Brooks". Arden also had a short-lived sitcom in the 60's with Kaye Ballard: "The Mothers-in-Law".
Jason G sure is just before she did the mother’s in law tv show and after our miss brooks tv show. Eve Arden was a big movie and tv star back in the day. May she Rest In Peace
They say crying is good for them was an old fashioned WRONG belief and gave many babies a bad start. I went with INSTINCT and fed my 2nd child whenever he cried and he was the happiest most placid baby, that never cried unless there was a good reason. What ridiculous lies they used to ram down our throats with terrible results. 😢
It’s so funny that all they did was use a stand-in with a wig for back-of-the-head shots, but at the time we were all so impressed by it 😂 When The Parent Trap came out a few years earlier it had one single two-shot of the twins, and otherwise just a bunch of this, and everyone acted like it was so cutting edge, practically magic. We were all so credulous and easily impressed back then
My favorite episode has to be the one where Dick York thinks that Samantha is pregnant, but it was actually Louise Tate. I believe it was season two (black and white). Very funny and entertaining! After season 4 I think the show lost its charm.
My favorite episode of Bewitched (and reportedly EM's favorite as well) is "Sisters At Heart" telecast on December 24, 1970 - the entire message in that episode reflected what EM wanted Bewitched to be about-
Oh how I loved Bewitched there was another series like it called Geinie or something. Bewitched was a pure escapist break. It gave so much pleasure to so many I wish there could be another similar series. Coffee, bicckies n half hour blissful fantasy. X
Actually Serena debuted on Bewitched on the 2nd season then a few years later I Dream of Jeanie introduced Jeanie's older sister who had the same name.
My apologies... I had forgotten the scene and researched but unfortunately responded too soon. Eve Arden is/was always wonderful. Again...my sincere apologies to you.
Her biggest break was when she played Connie Brooks in a radio, later TV show called “Our Miss Brooks”. And she also played the Principal McGee in “Grease” and “Grease 2”
What's his name Darwin sucks. Such a bossy twerp and honestly abusive taking things out on Sam all day every day for real. He sucks. Dariwn sucks. But it's onky for a couple days in their time. They live hundreds and hundreds if years. I feel like that's how she was able to live with him.
Serena is not so bad she brought flowers. My Dad's nurse said my dad was falling into a deep sleep and he wouldn't wake up from it because his eye's were 'fixed and diiolated' he was sent home on home hospice from the hospital because his blood pressure was too low and there was no cure for it. I grabbed his hand and he woke up. and he said what time is it? I said it is 2:30 in the morning. He grabed him a cigerette and started smoking i said i love you dad. my sisters were there too i said now it is your turn so they said they loved him. Then he went back to snoring and died at 8:30 AM in his sleep. The nurse said she never seen that in her 20 years she has only heard of a few times from other peoples stories. Well you gotta try i am an Rh A Negative blood type so is my dad we are born a bit differnt kinda witchy. lol.
Just because Darrin was human didn't mean he has to keep Samatha not to use her power which is normal to her. I never could get that concept of Darrin being so negative of her power.
I like when Samantha's evil twin cousin Serena visits Samantha in the hospital after she had Tabitha & Samantha tells Serena that her husband is mortal & I love that Serena showed Samantha she turned the nurse into a frog in bewitched season 2
ajmittendorf I was so confused as child watching this. I was convinced that was Elizabeth Montgomery and when I saw the “Pandora Spocks” in the credit, I made up a story in my head that EM had a real life twin sister named Pandora Spocks. We didn’t have the internet back then for me to verify lol
@BroodingARTist And she had two of her own TV shows - "Our Miss Brooks" in the 50s (she played a schoolteacher) and "the Mothers-in-Law" in the 60s... "Our Miss Brooks" was EXTREMELY popular; "the Mothers-in-Law" less so...
Kinda weird how you can almost see the double's (Melody Thomas) face in a couple shots -- they did it much better in later episodes, like Double Double Toil and Trouble, my personal fave.
What kind of hospital is this? Samantha and her baby are on lockdown. No visitors - no flowers - you can't hold your own baby. Your mother can't stay with you. Very odd.
Depending on when she gave birth. Women used to treating very weirdly in maternity wards. They knocked them out for labor and delivery and it took several days to be strong enough to hold the baby etc.
During this pandemic, these are exactly the rules maternity wards are using ( although they may allow flowers but not even husbands in the delivery rooms)! Crazy, right!
It's quite typical of the way maternity units were run back then. Husbands were not allowed to be present for the birth, and certainly no other "support person" allowed. Women didn't know much about labour and delivery and were discouraged from asking questions, breastfeeding wasn't encouraged, babies went to the nursery ( which were behind locked doors ) and were brought to their mothers once every 4 hours for a feed and then taken back to the nursery while women remained in bed for a week "recovering". Flowers were thought to deprive the room of oxygen which was why there were limits on those. Sometimes they were taken out of the rooms overnight then given back in the morning. It does all indeed sound quite crazy now lol
@@oodles_of_noodles. Which is why I would prefer to give birth at home or in a birthing center-more freedom and control that way, and I can bond with my baby immediately without the unnecessary interference of coldhearted maternity nurses
@@harperstacey9604 Sadly, no. In person she was actually humble and did community playhouse. My cousin was able to play act with her. She was great and had conversations with the audience for a couple hours afterwards talking about all kinds of personal struggles.
Yes, in the 1965 episode "That Was No Witch, That Was My Wife", Sam does don a black wig (and a different "persona") to see if Darrin would "fall for another woman". That was probably the genesis for this episode. However, as we all know, Serena wouldn't appear again until the beginning of season three...and then slowly "morphed" into a "hip", "kooky" character by the end of 1968.
That episode, combined with the episode where Endora turns into Samantha for a dress fitting and starts dating Darrin’s friend Bob Frazier, is also an inspiration.
