The coach admitted he was coaching, whether Serena lied about watching him or not, she knows she can’t break her racket without a violation, and called the ref a thief and continued yelling at him, man if I were the ref especially after two violations I would have thrown her out of the game for her yelling at him continuously

The only thing I don’t understand here is why was she so quick to call it a sexism. It might just be directed to her. So if a guy gets the same treatment from the umpire they should shout sexism too? A lot of the women nowadays, especially the influential ones are overusing this. Expected to be treated like a queen, or it’s a sexism.

He's just trying to point out the discrepancies in the way males and females are being treated online for the same things. Again, I'm not defending anyone here; just trying to point out the point of this video. Even though long time has passed, but i still want to say how wrong is Trevor in this talk 1. Coach is not allowed to help during the competition, it's not about coaching in general. This is crystal clear rule for tennis. 2. The referee had made a correct decision by giving a penalty, and Serena should accept it and move on (apparently she didn't). 3. The difference between some man players and Serena in this particular situation is that she kept trash-talking for some long period of time, male players maybe had a short burn-out and that's it. 4. Serena accused referee on being sexist (her opponent was a woman too), liar and thief, whereas the man was just doing his job. 5. I personally believe that in sports like tennis, volleyball, swimming, athletics there is a very important difference that competitors don't have a physical contact with each other, so the only thing that matters for winning is skillset (in basketball, football or hockey happens lot of hard contacts during a match, and many injuries might happen which could affect on result, that's why losing temper there sometimes is reasonable) . This is why Serena should be able to control herself because the only reason that she was losing was that the opponent was outplaying her! PS.. sorry for my mistakes, English isn't my mother tongue

I think Trevor is so wrong here. If there is a rule of not coaching then that rule applies to all players whether male or female. Period. Don't compare Tennis(a non contact game) with likes of Basketball or Football. I mean, chess has different set of rules than Football, I don't see Chess GrandMasters complaining about that. Also, Serena kept going after the umpire for a long time. Called him Liar and Thief, meanwhile that guy is just doing his job. She, before that broke her racquet out of anguish. She just wanted to win after becoming a "mom", disregarding the fact that the young girl who she was playing against also put hard work into her play. The worst part was when Osaka cried and apologised for winning. Serena as a mom failed to show millions of daughters to be supportive of other women's victory. I mean, the Beauty pageant win where Miss Nigeria didn't win but was so happy that other black woman did, is a way better show of support than what Serena did. It's understandable what Serena did because she wanted to prove her haters wrong and felt that pressure of victory. But, it's not acceptable what her action led to a situation where the victor was humiliated by the the audience because they wanted to show support to Serena. Also, not acceptable when influential people like Trevor talk about women only from Serena's perspective and not from a new player Osaka's standpoint, who ironically is also a woman. A wrong is a wrong, whether it comes from a man or woman, whether it happened at the expense of another man or woman.

Serena Williams is not new to the sport of tennis. She should know better. I do find the coaching rule dumb, but it is a rule. It is obvious players should not break/abuse the racket. As for the verbal abuse. Even I got sick of it. Serena kept bad mouthing the umpire after the point penalty. Trevor, I think you’ve got this one wrong. I’ve played and watched tennis all my life and three warnings lead to a game deduction. It’s part of the rules. Regardless of how you think not coaching is a dumb rule or not, it is a rule. That’s irrelevant to the argument. In total if you get three code violations, which Serena did for coaching, breaking a racket, and then throwing a tantrum at the umpire, you lose a game. That particular umpire has been consistent, albeit strict, across the men’s and women’s game. If you look at his history, he’s harshly penalised Djokovic and Nadal too for coaching and racket smashes in history. Other umpires are more chill, but this guy isn’t and you should know that going into a match. The argument was that he’s somehow sexist for enforcing the rules on Serena. Serena stated that she was a mother and argued purely based on her feelings, instead of specifically calling out the code violations and the rules. She accused the umpire of being sexist. Her approach was to play the discrimination card when there was absolutely no evidence to base it on. That was unsportsmanlike and misguided. If every marginalized person argues on feelings, and we can’t do anything to them, that’s victimization and all sense goes out the window. That’s dangerous to society. The point penalty is nothing really. She just started with 0-15 instead of 0-0in the next service... in soccer for example you receive a yellow if you remove your t-shirt when celebrating for a goal. 2 of these and you are out and your team plays at 10vs11... The broken racket alone justified the punishment she had. Then during the pause she went to insult the referee... She is not a junior player. She knows what she is doing and the risks involved by acting like that. And then she had a real punishment and had a game penalty. That's quite hard but it was the next level after the first one that wasn't obviously enough... Again in soccer you usually get a yellow for that and after the first one you are out. Then she called officials to try to make them undo what the referee decided but this is stupid. The referee is the only one deciding on a court. If you start cancelling their decisions they loose all authority. During all that time the poor Osaka lost here concentration and when the match started again Serena won a game easily. So basically she had a game punishment too... The worst part is calling that sexisme. When you are speeding and receive a fine for that, maybe you see other persons speeding too but the cop is occupied giving you the fine and these people go unpunished. It's unfair! It's not because other people acting badly can go away that the fine you receive is unjustified... and trying to use sexism to justify your bad behavior is just lame. This is really the worst part of it. She had been a pro for 20 years and can't deal with a referee decision? It was just selfishness and she ruined Osaka's victory (the first Japanese wining btw, man or woman) After the end Serena realized that she acted badly and changed here behavior but for me it's too late. You can't act badly and then just say let's be friend again and act like nothing happened.

@GLInick
@GLInick 5 лет назад
Jay Varner, there is uneven application of the rules (cornet shirt change v. shirtless novak, rafa getting medical break when loosing), but the argument that male players are given more leeway is completely without basis. The stats bear it out that men are penalized 4:1. If you don't know the rules in tennis you can't expect to come into the sport after reading the headlines and evaluate what went wrong here, and what didn't. I've been playing tennis for years, and I don't want it to loosen up, not in the way you seem to suggest. If anything, we need more umps like this one to stop some of the BS that still goes on, despite the years we had to endure with a-holes like McEnroe, etc. Trevor Noah has morphed from a great comedian willing to make good fun of everything and anything to a shill that trolls anything that might be remotely related to racism, or sexism. He knows NOTHING about tennis. He can't make any coherent argument about racism or sexism based on this incident. But, as we all see, informed opinion is so yesterday. Seriously, the number of comments that say TN is clueless about tennis, many of them women, and people from SA ... where do you think that is coming from, sexism? You should look up how "sexist" the tennis world was to Serena when she felt it appropriate to REPEATEDLY threaten a FEMALE line judge in 2009. No, Trevor. What Serena did was wrong. Carlos Ramos is a fair umpire and a stickler for the rules. He's given court violations to Nadal, Djokovic and Andy Murray. For Andy, he gave the violation for calling him "a stupid umpire" This is not an isolated incident. Last year, he gave two court violations to Nadal for serving slow. It's not as if he targeted Serena. Yes, all coaches coach players in Tennis matches, but her coach was actually caught on camera and admitted as such. He was caught on camera and thus, he was penalised. That's all. It's not as if Carlos turned himself and saw what her coach was doing. And you can't judge McEnroe by today's standards. Personally I do not think that this has much to do with men and women being treated differently, but much more with the tolerance of the specific umpire. During the 2012 US Open final, Umpire Eva Asteraki accepted to be called "unattractive inside" and other insults by Serena, probably because she did not want to interfere with play. On the other hand, Umpire Carlos Ramos is known not to take any shit from players. A couple of years back (I think in 2017) he gave an official warning to Novak Djokovic for a hand gesture. Most umpires would probably let him get away with it, but Carlos Ramos would not. Taking this into account, I think it is fair to say that this umpire actually does treat men and women equally. I don't want t to deny that there are a lot of areas (also within professional sports) where there absolutely is a problem concerning unequal treatment of men and women, but taking this umpire's action as an example for gender inequality is utter nonsense in my eyes.

Her coach made a mild violation. He was caught. Serena took it weirdly personally saying some really strange shit like "I'd rather lose than cheat, I'm a mother". She broke a racquet, thus committing a second violation. Finally, she insulted and threatened the umpire's job accusing him of being a thief. Everything is on her and she was treated fairly. It happens in a player's career to have a bad moment like that. The army that stood up to defend her just because she's popular is plain wrong, and Trevor is sadly part of that army.

5) Serena's coach revealed that his hand motions were telling her to move up to the net. Within 3 points of his coaching, Serena moves up to the net when she has not done so the entire of the match. Its more than fair to get the first warning. 6) The statistic from this 2018 US open is 23 code violations for men and 9 for women, if i am not wrong. So who is being sexist? What you told is not what happened. Serena was given 2 warnings (that is 1 point penalty) for breaking the rules twice. Your story is a joke; your are in bad faith.

Serena was so passionate, she used her child as a trump card to justify her victimhood and played the female card in a match against a female. Such immeasurable passion; only the likes of Trevor Noah, who's probably just as passionate, can understand and fathom.

I don't watch tennis, but I'm assuming men get in situations like this and it doesn't make headlines, right? In most American sports, it's not headlining news for someone to yell at the empire/ref so it just seems odd that when Serena does it, the media makes it a leading story.

Sorry, Trevor, probably the first time I disagree with you here. The coaching issue here is deeper. Roger Federer nailed it - tennis is very much a contest between just the two players. In-game coaching is not allowed. Also, every player does not have access to the same resources, and if in-game coaching was allowed, it could cause imbalance. Singles is truly a contest between the two players themselves for that game. I think that is apt.

@pierrez8570

I can't believe what I'm seeing here. I guess the main issue is that people are so ignorant about tennis, and just watch it when the US Open is on (in America, as French would only watch tennis when the French Open is on). In tennis we don't want people smashing rackets or talking shit to the umpire (by the way, in what world do we live today if we advocate for blatantly disrespecting other people and shouting at them...?). Tennis is a sport based on the curtesy of the players to each other and to the umpire. Second, Serena knows the rules. She has been playing since forever. After getting the first warning - whether the warning was justified or not - she should have kept her cool and kept on playing, well knowing that breaking a racket would mean automatically losing a point. She has been known to return situations that were way worse (in terms of her being dominated by the opponent in the match) in her career, so she definitely has the grit and the nerves to keep her head cool in such situations. Instead of doing that, she went on and called the umpire a thief - which, by the way, no male or female tennis player does - and completely disrupted the match. This reminds me of the likes of Connor and McEnroe who were deliberately creating chaos on court in order to disrupt their opponents when they were behind in score. Third, the sexism card. The referee, who has an exceptional track record as a great umpire in tennis, by the way, is also known to give no free pass to big tennis stars (no matter their gender). Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal have both been warned and punished by this umpire for breaking the rules. None of them made a scene or a fuss out of it. It is not a case of sexism. It is a case of a star that wants a free pass because usually it works. In tennis it's not about gender, it's more about your star status. Usually works (and it worked for Serena despite uttering death threats to umpires in 2009 and 2011) but not with this specific umpire. Not to mention Serena participating in a sexist and homophobic commercial against Amélie Mauresmo a couple years ago (great example of fighting for women rights). I think her attitude was disgraceful and she spoiled the party for Naomi Osaka, who was idolizing her in the past. Fortunately she tried to make amend at the end and that is the only moment where she conducted herself like a true champion, something she should always do if she truly wants to be a role model.

I am a tennis fan and in this case the ref did just what he would do in any other match with male players. Tennis isn't any other sport, tennis isn't the NBA, it has its own rules that ARE more strict and players (men and women) do get penalized more for behavior like breaking a racket and insulting a ref. That's normal. That's tennis. So no, in this case this has absolutely nothing to do with gender or a sexist ref and the discussion about it is very silly for everyone that only knows a little bit about tennis. It's important that gender-issues are discussed. But unfair attacks like this that are made without knowing the facts aren't helping, they are helping the other side.

And I feel like tennis is a sport where there's some class to be expected on the court, I mean there are some outbursts of course, that's not what I mean. But I know that players sometimes get penalties for shouting to distract an opponent. I feel like it's a sport where rules are there for a reason - to focus on the game and to have it look professional. if there's no coaching rule, then there's no coaching rule. Plus tennis is a mental game, if you're losing and you can't stay focused, you won't be able to win. And she just lost it completely there. Like, one penalty in the final match and she's absolutely distracted! And now she's the victim?? No.

@Viqala Sexism part seems more like the reaction to Serena Williams who is angry over a stupid rule just like every other player which lots of people let male players rage slide. Serena should be suspended until making a public appology both to the umpire and the adversary. As for Trevor's show, I love him but in this case he was ill informed and I dont agree with his assessment. Serena was not a victim, coaching is a penalty in tennis and is in the rules, she was point penalized on the third warning for berating the umpire and calling him a "thief" and a "liar" while she threw a tantrum. Serena was at fault here. Carlos Ramos is clearly the victim here. Think of it this way. Had it been a woman umpire and a male player would you draw the same conclusion? Ramos did his job. He did his job earlier this year when he penalized Djokovic for bouncing his racket (He didn't even break the racket). To people who are saying he should have offered soft warnings, I say this. The rulebook has a provision for soft warnings. That's why there are 3 stages of violations. The 1st one a warning, the 2nd one a warning and a point, and the 3rd one a game point. The punishment for consecutive violations get progressively harsh, which I think is fair. Her coach admitted to coaching her from the stands so she got the 1st warning. The 2nd warning and a point loss she got for breaking her racket, which again was a fair call. Now, the 3rd violation. Ramos could have announced that when Serena said "You are never going to be on my court ever again" (That's a threat, she is actually threatening to jeoperdize his career). He didn't. He could have awarded the 3rd violation when she said you are a "liar". He didn't. He could have done that when she agressively demanded that he apologized. He didn't. He announced the 3rd violation and the game when she called him a "thief". That's completely fair and for him to be painted a sexist for doing his job is a clear example of how some people twist these very serious words to their advantage.

@Dolan Dark's child a rule often ignored by players and judges alike and concidered by many to be a silly rule, probably because its a silly rule. Cant use the "rules are rules" argument because what argument calls for is equal treatement for all based on rules, and this was clearly not that (as equal treatement would mean disqualifying all the other players who got coached during their games, a regular occurence). Your all riding the high horse pretending to be paragons of justice and law, when really you just wanna shit on someone succesfull and tell everyone how you have more patience and decorum than a professional athlete. Tennis is an individual sport, which is about mentality as much as physicality. You have to be on your own, figuring out ways to get out of troubles, ways to tear down and attack the weakness of your opponent. On court, all by yourself. It’s the beauty of the game. Also, Federer once said if coaching is allowed, rich players who have more financial ability can hire better coach, which is unfair. And Federer is the richest of them all...

It's the same for fencing, but it's not technically against the rules for your instructor to be saying things. Everything that happens during then is the fruit you reap from your hard work, or lack thereof.

The thing about tennis in coaching is that you cannot coach MID-MATCH as it gives players a unfair advantage as the coach gets a broader strategic view of things and can shift match into favor not using the players own intuition. This does not mean the coach does not coach outside of matches hence why they are called coaches. Also if you have played tennis having a coach give the other team strategy is seemingly unfair as they can figure people out easily most of the time. Also tennis has a certain ettiquite in which I sometimes interfere with but smashing a racquet is the epitome of poor class in the sport, which made it seem she actually lost it. Also guys do get penalized just as women do, racquet abuse is a regular penalty. And lastly Osaka was overshadowed by Serenas controversy in her first grandslam which is just sad, as we don't know if she was crying because of grief or happiness at times.

From my perspective, honestly she was in the wrong. She got a minor penalty for her coach using signals, which he admitted to later. It doesn't matter if she looked or not, it's still against the rules, and it was a very minor penalty. Smashing your racket into the ground is where the first big penalty came into play; you don't do that. Other men have done it, and guess what, got the same penalty. People all the time yell and treat the officials/refs like crap. But it came off to where instead of using profanity she instead called him a liar and a thief. He literally was letting her treat him like shit and piss and moan until she said those things and had enough of it, and penalized her for it. He criticizes Trump more but who wouldn't. As for Serena Trevor may be biases just because he likes Serena and not just because she's black. The whole US Open crowd was behind her and agreeded with her and there were very few blacks there. Other tennis players agreed with her. Why can't it be because she is Serena and not just because she is black. Early in Serena's career whenever she played at the US open the crowd cheered for the opposing players. Press from other countries used to say stuff like ' This is different from our country. The crowd at the French Open would be cheering for the French players.

I don't agree. You can't compare tennis to football or to basketball. First of all, you're a single player. Second of all, every sport has its own rules. And if you would have informed yourself you would have known that in tennis you have to behave and keep calm. Players who break things are considered to be disrespectful. There are certain rules you have to respect. And most importantly, you have to accept when your opponent plays better. You can't say that because in judo, players enter the scene by bowing down, football players have to bow down too before every game. Sometimes we should let the experts do their job without analyzing every single move or decision.

What many people are inaccurately doing, including you Trevor Noah, is comparing Serena’s third violation to men’s first violation. A first violation, regardless of what it is (verbal abuse, racket throwing, illegal coaching), is only a warning. Any violation after that is essentially a repeat offender and thus given a harsher sentence. So comparing Serena’s third violation, which any third violation is harsh, to men’s first violation is illogical. Love your show but those that are wanting gender equality, including myself, probably should not hang their hat on this incident as an example. Furthermore, if you look at Ramos, the umpire, he has a history (i.e. consistent) of meticulously following the rules.

Take this incident - I can be pro gender equality, pro Serena Williams, even pro motherhood (which has nothing to do with receiving a tennis violation), and still disagree with Serena by using logical reasoning.
