Serena really turned her year around after winning the Canadian Open that year. She lost so many matches in 2001 after being way up (e.g. against Hingis at the Australian Open, against Capriati at Wimbledon, against Seles at Los Angeles). Although she didn't win the U.S Open here since Venus was too good, you can see here how she would develop into one of the greatest of all time. What's funny for me is that I saw this side of her back in 1999. She then had a poor year (for her standards anyways) in 2000. And when she started to choke away matches in 2001, I thought that maybe I was wrong about her. But boy was I wrong about that. She became almost unstoppable starting in 2002 and onwards.

I agree on everything except for Venus being too good, I think Serena let the tension get the better of her. She played better than Venus in the Semis

Spot on with your assessment… There was no stopping Venus at the 2001 US Open

Serena didn't miss a 1st serve in the 2nd set and serve 87% for the match. 10 aces and no double faults. She was in the zone.

Yes, Serena has the best serve of all time in women's tennis. Even Federer and Djokovic say so.

Back in the day Puma used to have Serena in the same outfit for the entire season. Thank God Nike came along

These are the kind of matches that drove Hingis into retirement. The game was going into a different direction. Serena destroyed Hingis again in 2002 Miami open 6-4 6-0.

no she had injuries..she was still a finalist in the following AO.

What are you talking about, she's a great player and retired due to the injuries.
@marfu1119
@marfu1119 Год назад
@@geralddiaz4539 Yes she was injured but injuries is not the only reasons she retired as mentioned before. By making the AO final shows you if it wasn't for players like the William sisters Hingis would of never retire in 2003 but instead using injuries as an excuse for her retirement. But tennis experts knew the real reasons Hingis retired so young. She was the best for a long time but by 2002 at her very best she was just a top 10 player the game was evolving.

@@malikfo1941 No one said Hingis is not a great player but she was not the best anymore. The game was moving on. Hingis even said herself in an interview she was burnt out and needed a break. She was getting destroyed by Serena 2001-2002 injuries alone is not the only reasons she retired the game was getting too physical for her so she walked away at just 22 years old. She did came back in 2006 when the William sisters were not dominating anymore. There was a video made about it in 2006 when Hingis first came out of retirement by Mary Carrilo on how there was a shift in women tennis how the William sisters and other power hitters drove Hingis out of the game. Was a very insightful video tells you the story how easy it was for Hingis when she first came out but the game change and she walked away according to the video which I believe is true. Injuries was probally part of it but was just an excuse she needed something to say why she was retiring.

i remember in Tennis magazine seeing a stat that said Serena won 100% of points on her second serve....or she got 100% of her second serves in, meaning no double faults.

Serena overpowered Hingis these days. I think Hingis had it in her to fight back. But in my opinion she did not want to do the hard work, athletics and so on. That's why she failed and had to retire

Hingis got exposed in 21 set century when power players finally took game to next level. Her fans use excuses but fact is she couldnt win grandslams anymore and spammed other tournaments

I think that if she had Worked hard enough to get stronger and improved the areas in her game that were being repeatedly taken advantage of, she might have won another major... But the truth is she never really put in that level of work and by the time she came back after a few years away from the game, things had changed even more... She got pushed around the court too much in matches like this to impose her game...

Bueno ella llegó a finales del G. Slam todos los años, y Australia 2002 lo tenía ganado. Es verdad que la fuerza se impuso y había más rivalidad, pero en mi opinión fue más una cuestión mental que tenistica.

Fact of the matter is that Hingis never recovered from her 1999 F.O debacle against Steffi. In fact Hingis records against power players is not that bad actually. Vs Serena 6-7 Vs Venus 11-10 (winning h2h) Vs Capriati 5-4 (winning h2h) Vs Davenport 11-14 Vs Seles 15-5 ( although Seles past her prime a bit but still a fantastic record) In fact Hingis really struggle against Steffi with 2-7 h2h. Even a past prime Steffi in 1998-99 beating peak Hingis multiple times.
