Here's my 2011 staging of Balanchine's enduring masterpiece, SERENADE for the Sacramento Ballet.. This was the first ballet he choreographed in America, and it was for his students at his (and Lincoln Kirstien's) new SCHOOL of AMERICAN BALLET in New York City. Choreographed in 1934 to "teach the students how to be on stage," according to Balanchine, this ballet has gone through many changes, including costumes, decor, order of the music, and even the number of soloists...and yet...this ballet has remained true to his original intent ("Dancers dancing in the moonlight") and is still, SERENADE. When he was choreographing this he said he never knew who would turn up for rehearsals, so he just choreographed for the number of dancers who showed up. This rather haphazard approached has morphed into a genuine masterpiece of dance and loved internationally, and is in the repertory of every major (and minor) ballet company in the world. The lead dancers in this video are Alexandra Cunningham, ("Waltz") Amanda Porter, ("Russian") Ava Chatterson, ("Dark Angel") Oliver-Paul Adams, ("Waltz") and Rick Porter, ("Elegie"). I've now staged this ballet for over 30 years; for co's ranging from the Paris Opera Ballet to the Milwaukee Ballet, and from the Beijing Dance Academy to Goucher College...and it is always a grand success. Like so many of Balanchine's ballets, it's virtually indestructable.

I loved Serenade when I saw it for the first time by the New York City Ballet many years ago. By that time I didn't know I would be one of the dancers participating in Serenade! Watching this beautiful performance memories come back and I feel happy and sad at the same time, because I can still feel the movemens inside but I cannot be part of it anymore: I am 81! Thanks for sharing the dance and the music!

I saw this live during dress rehearsal at the sacrament community center theater. My professor Nolan T’sani(former soloist with NYCB) got me in. The performance was so breath taking. I later bought tickets to see it bc I just had to see it again. I took years of ballet but never saw it live before that time. Wow, I can’t believe, I found this!!!

I love the lighting at the ending. I've never seen it that way. That may be how it turns out on the screen, but it's exquisite. On a less exquisite note, I once saw Merrill Ashley in rehearsal bend over backwards...and fall back. Of course, the guys caught her, but I do think of that moment every time I see "Serenade." (Please don't fall...) I love this ballet for so much.

This is the lighting as it was in Balanchine’s day. They’ve changed it now.

Я в восторге от хореографии. Высокая танцевальная архитектура. Сравнить бы с первыми постановками. Но освещение мне понравилось в фильме 1973года. Там сделаны акценты на пластических композициях.

John Clifford I agree! Just glad to be able to see another gem that you wrought on behalf of Mr. B. If only I’d known about this before you left the Sacramento company. Berkeley California so close. It would’ve been like making a pilgrimage in my book. Thanks again for posting!
