What was enjoyable about this performance is that both ladies were let loose, almost vocally competing showing their skillset while within the parameters of the song. So cool to listen too!
Totally agree with you. It's a real pleasure to see awesome performances like this one preserved forever on RU-vid. Modern miracle of technology and collaboration.
If you haven't seen, "Mais Que Nada (original) 1963 by Melissalindona" recommend you RU-vid the video as the picture are priceless. Love this rendition. Takes me back 50 years.
Beautiful as it is but those intros make it even amazing Sergio You were a unique performer and Lani Hall complemented You beautifully Thank You RIP Sergio Mendes God Bless!
What I love about jazz concerts is that the band leader always gets up and introduces the entire band at the end of the show for a round of applause. It's really nice showing appreciation for your band.
I’m a musician myself! I have been playing guitar 🎸 for over fifty years with my band friends! We are all studio musicians! After listening to 66 , I discovered just what cool 😎 music 🎶 is! I’m definitely still trying to sound like 👍 66 ! Smile
Sergio Mendez's worldwide success would not have been possible without the voices of Lani Hall and Karen Philipp. Their magnificent voices had an incredible symbiosity!
Wow, great live performance of this song! I just loved this group on television in the 60s, listening to them on KOY in Phoenix in the car; this song is cool and classic! RIP Sergio Mendes you brought us all so much happiness, then and now.
Much True Respect and Honor to Jorge Ben who wrote and created the song Mas Que' Nada. Respect and Gratitude to Sergio Mendez and Brasil '66 for their interpretation.
sequoyah59 - For one thing, she got married and may have wanted to move on. For another, the character was carried over from the film and it may be that she was not thought to fit the concept the producers of the tv version wanted. All of the regulars in the tv version had depth. That’s a big part of the reason it had such a long run.
Brazilian Jazz, is amazingly the very best of the best of all jazz. I remember hearing Deodato play in the seventies and was just blown away by his sound...
I remember all persons from Brasil 66. I remember when I was children his sister was listen to talk in public. Many times I could see him in your home. He lived with his parents and her sister. It was more than 50 years ago. Whem he could came back with his Brasil 66 Band he showed in Caio Martins Stadium in Niteroi and his sister invited me to see the Band and Sergio Mendes after many time. I couldn' t believe in this moment. I was singing all of songs from Brasil 66. I never see him but his sister I meet here. I feel so much because he leaf together many brasilian' s songers our music, beautifull brasilian music for USA and many countries could be know. love Carminha- I still live in Niteroi. Sergio Mendes was and he is one of most brasilian songers together his band.
Sergio Mendes one of the world's best composer and Brasil 66 one of the world's best voices. never again will there be music as special as theirs. so sexy yet so cool.
Good to see this. This is an actual live performance. Had the pleasure of meeting Sergio backstage after their performance at the Circle Star Theatre in San Carlos. Sergio was very nice to us and invited us back for the following nights performance. I also met Karen Phillips (she was even more beautiful in real life, I was totally in love). My brother took photos of us with the group members which he still has. Good times.
The Circle Star! It was a great venue. The 'circle' part is that the stage was round, and in the center of a circle of seats. This made every seat close to the performers. Usually the stage rotated slowly. This also meant that the stars would enter by walking down one of the aisles. That must have been a great show to see Brazil 66 there!
Fantastic live musicians ; two sensuous , passionate ladies; Would have loved to seen this show live ! God bless the genuine real talented musicians .👍
I’ve been watching their videos for three years and never run across this one somehow. It’s one of the few live ones where they are actually singing, and not lip-synching!
Gracias Dios por haberme permitido nacer en una época donde todavía puedo disfrutar esta joya musical, ojala que las nuevas generaciones la entiendan y disfruten, aunque no lo creo jajaj
It must be tough for them to play these songs night after night and put the same energy into it. Great songs, but I would die of boredom. That's show biz. Same thing with all successful groups, they must get tired of it, but not the money.
This is a GREAT bit of footage. So many TV appearances of this song were just lip-synched/dubbed. This is clearly them performing live. Excellent !!!! AND...I never knew Dom Um Romao played in Brasil 66 !!!!!
Dom Um Romao was one of the most famous drummers in Brazil in the sixties When moving to the USA, he played, as a drummer, with Sergio Mendes' Bossa Rio sextet and Cannonball Adderley, Tom Jobim and Frank Sinatra (on the Sinatra-Jobim LP). Later he played with Weather Report as a percussionnist , and finally under his own name.
SMB66 was a magical moment in time that made earth a much better place . i feel real lucky to be able to watch these wonderful vids of this cool group of people that 'caught lightning in a bottle'
Karen Phillip sang with Brasil '66 until 1972, when she left to portray Lt. Dish during the inaugural season of M*A*S*H. She sang in "The Fool on the Hill" cover, another Brasil '66 big hit (1968). That record features Phillip, Hall and another vocalist, Gracinha Leporace, in just one track. Leporace was the wife of mendes, and became full time vocalist of the group when Lani Hall began a solo career (she married Herb Alpert too).
Com estilo bem jogado, S. Mendes sem dúvida foi marcante nas décadas de 60, 70,80. Excelente pianista , sempre com um ótimo grupo , fez grande sucesso qndo por aki. Valeu S.Mendes. Obrigado.

I've searched high and low for live performances of Sergio Mendes and Brasil 66 lineup and there are very few available on youtube. Thanks for posting this great live performance.
Absolutely brilliaint i love this band and their music but i do think Ksren Phillip is underated, what a voice she had and i love her dancing.Thank you for posting this ❤
Superb ... absolutely brilliant - takes me right back to when I was a young woman, and the world was a wonderfully fun, beautiful place. Thank you very much indeed.
This is version 66.2; for reasons known only to himself, Sergio fired everyone on a whim. The three guys and two girls were axed, he had no band, Herb told him to rehire Lani, but Sergio would not rehire Janis. Not as good as the two singers were in different registers and the original pair did. Shortly afterward Lani left and there was version 66.3 who faded away. There was a version 77 and 88, but few remember them. Minimal new music came after that, pity.
hello sergio mendez , lani hall. and all the group members , we loved you for so many years , but this this is just the time we got computer and social media to comment , we love you..
These girls sang as one. Musical perfection. Musical genius, is the sound of Sergio Mendez and Brazil ‘66. Sergio, like Stevie, was born with the happiness gene. Just an amazing assemblage of artists.
drummer here...i love this tune...thank you Sergio and band. i LOVE the band intros....we know what was pure spontaneous and you can see and feel the energy of the band...I would give anything to play this tune , its timeless....and just cool in too many ways. Thank you again!
I saw Lani Hall perform a couple of times at a club in the Old Town section of Chicago, Wells St. and North Ave., back around 65, it was hippie town then and you got stoned just by breathing the air around you. When I heard her sing I felt like she was going somewhere, and she did. She sings like an angel, I love you Lani, never stop!
Yes karen your awesome live love You didn't get enough credit you deserved.I think loni as good as she was was cocky and had big head, but thx sergio and guys in the band your the bestest 🌷💕🌹still listen to you and love you today.
Sergio Méndez y su Brasil 66 todo un estilo con el bossanova qué música espectacular en los sesenta y muy vigente hoy 2020 Ricardo alegria Zambrano Popayan Colombia
Whoa! This came in my feed, never expected it. I remember first finding their albums in my parents' collection growing up in the 70s. Wonderful surprise, thanks for sharing this!
Me too!!!!! My dream was to have this incarnation of the band (well, survivors) do a reunion. I also wanted to see Astrud Gilberto. And, to make matters worse, the top Brazilian women's pole vaulter Fabiana Murer who was a very possible medal contender was injured.
