My late Dad drove many ex military Willy’s Jeeps, S1’s then later S11’s & S11A’s up to S111 and he thought the S1 was the best of them all, esp in winter on soft chewed up terrain in the 50’s during construction of the Hydro Schemes, not overly powerful but lots of traction & very good balance, only downside low slung fuel tank. My favourite is the S11/11A with nice quiet, smooth and very tractable 2286cc 4C Petrol Engine which is what I learned to drive in at an early age.

Mike, I keep all my RTV silicone sealants in the workshop, (beer), refrigerator, they can last for years at that temperature. Only take them out for the time it takes to apply them then put them back in. I use that Loctite and stuff we have here in Australia called Blue Max, it always sets fine even if I've had it stored for a long time. Using the fridge has saved me heaps of money from having to buy new sealant for every job.

I have noticed a few unopened RTV's like this do not cure

I'm doing a S1 IOE 2.0 Spreadbore since last year and it was my very first complete dismantle and reassembly job in and engine in my life. One my tricky decisions was the rear crank seal that needed to be replaced and the one that was ther installed for much more than 20 years (I had it stopped in my garage for more than 15) was a S2 plate with a split seal that fitted the crank diameter. I Tried to find a seal to fit there but had no success, so I had to order from Cox & Turner the correct seal and many other parts to do the job. Unfortunatelly with brexit, all the deliveries between UK and EU had became a complete mess and had to wait several weeks and pay huge amounts in taxes until I could see the parts in my hands. Now, the engine is quite ready and hope soon I can start it and find out if I did a good job or not. I believe I will find out after I see your lessons.😀

I found Craddock's had the seal for £49, and they have a lot of S1 parts at reasonable prices
@mpfrias

@@BritannicaRestorations That was a good price, but when I tried to find it, that wasn't available, I think. Instead, C&T have all other parts and very good communication with Ian Cox.

When I was looking at prices years ago Dunsfold had genuine old stock at £300 I believe!

Relaxing one with that bubbling fish tank ambiance Seems like S2 are a bit easier to work on in some ways, LR having learned a few lessons after v1.0.

Exactly, only to see where the Rocker valves are sitting Looks quiet interesting to adjust the valves. Its much easier in the 2.25 4cyl engine, but they came Back to old manners in the 6cyl engine

It maybe a landrover mechanic thing or just a age thing but every landrover bonnet open tool using tinkerier talks to the car and the repair sprint's

Don't forget to disconnect the ECU.....I believe on that model they were a Tri-ang and required winding up on a 3 weekly basis....

I've had RTV go bad if it gets frozen. Keep it stored at room temp.

thx for sharing mike, thats going to be a good one i am pretty shure the list for needed spareparts will get longer when the engine is out and clean. and be shure that me and all the others who have an old lady in the garage are scratching our head, if we should take a closer look at the engine or leave it inside and wish for the best ... especially at -5 thumbs up

Well the cylinders are good - I ended up taking off the head out of curiosity - needs a timing chain, new gaskets and lock tabs. Looks like this has been out in the past

Speaking of beer, how are you going to manage with the Canadian government new recommendation of only two drinks a week, maybe two massive drinks spread out over the week.

Well, Debra and I are now on a low-carb diet trying to lose this belly fat so does not matter at the moment, but it may be an idea to fire up my sill again!

The original box from Caddocks was crackers for the size of the contents, hardly surprising it was silly money for shipping. The S1 is looking good, be interesting to see the engine out and the work underway with it. I'm messing around with that wee JAP stationary engine at the moment. Not much to it, but still a bit of a learning curve for me. Never worked with a magneto before. Discovered a stuck valve when I removed the head but freed it off. Presume the S1 has a distributor?
