I made this last night for my boyfriend's family(a family of big meat eaters) and they LOVED it!! It was fantastic and definitely a keeper. Thank you so much, Sam! Your recipes are always incredible and help me keep all the non-vegans in my life satisfied :)
I followed your recipe today with a few modifications. I added cooked cabbage and onions to the mashed potatoes (like the mixture for bubble and squeak). If anyone likes cooked cabbage, this adds some extra texture and flavour to the potatoes. It turned out delicious. The lentils cost $1.19, cabbage $0.69, vegetables were already in the freezer, potatoes cost $0.89. A very cheap healthy meal and very meaty.
Shepherd's Pie is one dish I rely on, during the colder months. It's easy to prepare and is a great way to use odds & ends of veggies along with the lentils. It's good for weekly meal prep and, if you want to invite people over, it's a cheap way to feed hungry folks. Yes,I love your recipe, Sam.....thumbs up!
Girl, you are geniuos! Tried this one today and it is so so so gooooood! Added some homemade fiedroast seitan to make it more protein dense and leeks. Like seriously! The flavour is just amazing!!! Thank you!!!
I wanted to love this so much (we've loved every other thing we've made from you, thank you!!) but it had a bit of a strange taste to the potatoes. This may very well have been my fault, as I used a cup of coconut cream (95%!) rather than coconut full fat milk. I'm also wondering if my choice of hickory bbq sauce played into it. There really was no other choice that had a 'smoky' flavour to the bbq sauce, sadly, despite many choices. Such a shame! (as it makes a LOT!) My husband said he'll still eat it and my son's both ate a fair bit, but not our favourite. The search continues! :-)
I know I'm weird but what you said about 'it will taste delicious the next day' is absolutely correct because I love to save half of my Shepherd pie in a container and pop it in the fridge. The next day I will eat it while it's still cold from the fridge. It taste amazing even tho it'a cold.😂
I'm making this for Thanksgiving, and 2 of the 4 people in my household don't like mushrooms. I was planning on using corn instead of peas anyway, so I'm just going to use two times the amount of corn to replace the volume of the mushrooms. If you want to do both peas and corn you could probably add the amount of peas that she says to and then also that same amount of corn. Hope that helps! Happy Thanksgiving!
Omg I really like her. I think I would put like some barely cooked tomatoes in there too if I had them. Cooked barley kind of a thing would be nice too.
Great video and recipe. I usually use almond milk for the mashed potatoes and add garlic powder and nutritional yeast for a cheesy taste. It is a shame you killed the Rosemary plant, you need help with that. Pity I don't live where you live I could of helped with that. You need to make sure it is in a sunny, sheltered spot and avoid a area that is icy cold so the area needs to be mild warm. Hopefully that helps not everyone has green fingers I didn't when I started it is only experience and knowledge that I learned that helped and in the horticulture world every day is a school day you never stop learning.
Can you use red lentils instead of brown or green? Is there a difference? Also, do you have any substitution ideas for the mushrooms? I still can’t take the mushroom texture 💔 Looks sooo good!
Red lentils cook in about 1/2 the time as brown or green lentils and tend to get a bit mushy if you aren't careful, so you can but you will have to adjust the recipe accordingly. You can skip the mushrooms if you prefer.
Red lentils are brown lentils with the hull removed, so they don’t hold their shape and have less fiber. Great for thickening soups or stews, though. But for a recipe where texture is needed, such as this dish - I would avoid them. 😀
What a lovely surprise your channel and this recipe! A couple of months ago I made a regular Shepherds' pie (sorry, I'm not vegan 😥 but I enjoy vegan meals time to time to vary my diet) but I'll try this one too, might win over it! By the way, I'm probably going to use this ragout with pasta! Sounds delicious! Thanks Sam and greetings from Milan, Italy! 😊
I have a friend that put butter in everything. And for myself I hardly ever use it in food only in baked good. You can taste all that horrible tasting butter or margarine. That mash potatoes recipe is right up my alley. The whole recepie look so devine I would love it. I love veggies and beans and whole grains. Fantastic job. Well done.
I was genuinely anxious at the part where you couldn’t find a lid. Also, I need to try this one, since the meat is my least favorite part of Shepard’s pie...
Sam, in such a situation as a needed oversized "lid" a pizza pan works in a pinch. It's round and not as awkward as a cookie sheet! :) ...On the other hand, wouldn't a Shepard have lamb in his pie? I mean, hey, he's a Shepard! Maybe you could call the dish, "Conscience-stricken Ex-Shepard's Pie."
Seitanic Girl+ It's a handy hack. Once I was working in a restaurant and an abandoned deep pan of heating cooking oil hit its flash point and burst into flames! The dishwasher thought he would put the fire out with a bucket of sudsy water (!) I told him, "Hell No!!" and slapped a pizza pan on the top of the pan and deprived the fire of oxygen...out it went. You never know when you need a handy pizza pan! :)
This looks like a great recipe. IF you can stand that voice feel free to watch the video...I would recommend going straight to the recipe she posted rather than suffer thru the "overdone ON AIR" voice. IT really is her...it's all her videos...Ive tried turning the volume down because in the first minute its almost catchy, but it gets super old super fast, which is a shame because the recipes are tasty. Maybe it is just me, that voice rubs me the wrong way. I have watched her off and on for a while and even forgot about the annoying voice but it doesnt take long to remember! I still support her channel because I love the recipes, but I def prefer the cookbook voice free version!! Muting it and clicking on subtitles is another way to make it watchable.
your demeanour of 'I can't cook...its stressful' and almost whining through the video is patronising. It takes away from your actual abilities and the recipe.
I genuinely saw no whining nor any patronizing demeanour in the video. I believe this interpretation has more to do with the viewer missing Sam's sense of humour than the presenter.
