** ABOUT ME **
Hello! My name is Jay, and I am a long-time veteran of storytelling and a semi-seasoned DM! I began playing Dungeons and Dragons roughly 5 years ago and began my first ever game as the DM. I figured things out by watching online games and fumbling my way through the rules, and never looked back! I've fallen in love with TTRPG's in general and want to share my experience and thoughts with the world and community I love so much. I currently DM two separate games regularly, and continue to learn every day.
** ABOUT THE CHANNEL **
Play Your Role is a project with the intention of helping inspire and coach players and DM’s alike to add story beats and dramatic moments into their games through basic writing concepts, interesting player character inspirations, and discussions on how to effectively roleplay in a way that helps (not hinders) everyone else's roleplay at the table!

for the Grog rage scene, the way I see it is: Vex tells Grog that "the dragon is all nice and low for him, what do you want to do now?" And Grog does the rhetorical answer of his iconic line. Still meant mostly as a nod to the actual streams but it wouldn't be outside the scope of an animated show to "call out an attack" anyways.

The iconic (to the Critters) line of "I would like to rage" does seem a bit weird of a battle cry outside of the community, but I think they visually showed what was going on quite well by using the anime power up visual cues. The floor cracked underneath him, lines of power whipped around him, anything that could blow in the breeze did, his eyes glowed - all of those are classic indicators that someone is tapping into more power. Without someone explaining what Rage is, they figured out the main thing to tell the audience: Grog gets more power when he does this. And because they linked it to an anime power up, they also invoke the rules about power ups: they're temporary and you have to activate them, which handily tells the audience the rest of the rules of Rage. Power ups and special, limited actions have become a thing in action media that most people would recognize it. There might be a part of the audience who are new to VM, never played DnD before, and either missed or haven't noticed the power up visual language, but hopefully we can clue them in on what's going on if they want to know. :)
@Juice1984
@Juice1984 2 года назад
I would add that it's Grog saying it. The show has shown that Grog says Grog things. In my head canon, Pike taught him to say that so she was aware when her buddy would be bloodthirsty.
@Faeree
@Faeree 2 года назад
I also like that they aren't drowning us in that phrase. Like, there was once or twice more where I, as a critter, figured he'd say it again, but they didn't, because you are right. Anyone who doesn't know it would find it weird and, without something noting an explanation (even minor) to suggest that's his phrase at the very least, it would seem forced and weird. I think they are doing great to plant things for us while introducing the story to anyone who may not know the show.

One thing that I've noticed is that people have really managed to pick up on the "mechanics" of what's going on on screen, even if they don't know D&D mechanics. Like in the "I would like to rage" bit even if they don't know about Barbarian rage they tend to understand that Grog is powering up. It's fantastic how all this stuff translates that we can parse as D&D mechanics that also just becomes a storytelling element. having watched multiple reaction videos of people coming in cold to the show, not one of them bumped on Grog's rage moment. Granted, many may have been coming from an anime background, where calling out attacks can be common. Generally people seemed to get that he was either psyching himself up or buffing himself, depending on their knowledge base. and six episodes in, the show has only gotten better, IMO. I'm curious what level you think they are being portrayed at - Keyleth was level 12 for the original Briarwoods arc, so a 6th level Wall of Thorns was available to her, and Pike was 10th level when she first left, so again a 5th level Holy Weapon wasn't too strong for her.) One small (probably nit pick) point. Pike wasn't "written in". Ashley didn't get the Blindspot gig until after they started streaming. She was there for the home games, pre-stream. It was during the Kraghammer arc which led into the Briarwoods arc that Ashley got the Blindspot job. You see in the second batch (3-6) of episodes how they incorporate that into the show. I think they did a great job of not just skipping over that and creating a storyline for why Pike was absent. I can't wait to see how they tell the story of how she helps out. I know how they explained it in the live stream, but I think it's quite obvious by now that the animation is it's own thing. They are using the livestream as a solid basis, but are deviating somewhat to create a whole new thing. I am looking forward to see things that are familiar from my memory of C1 and to also be surprised and love all the new bits they put it.

Great stream-of-consciousness handling a bunch of facets to TLoVM. I agree that we should enjoy what we can, appreciate what was done well, and critique what could have been better. I think it's sad and hilarious that some people "refuse to support" the show... I don't know what reasons somebody could have for that, but it sounds incredibly egotistical. [Minor spoilers below as I share my opinions] Personally, I think the show is getting better as it goes. While I enjoyed the initial trio of episodes, the pacing is stupid fast. I really think the first two episodes with Krieg should have been three to allow enough time for more emotional beats and more character interactions. Taking enough time to BREATHE would have made the showdown with Krieg more impactful, I think. The only emotional driver we got for it was the death of the nameless NPC kids in the fishing village. As the party travels to Whitestone and begins to foment a rebellion, we get a lot more character-driven moments and overarching plot. I no longer got the feeling of "this is moving too fast to reflect upon" by episode 4. So I think the first few episodes would have been better by adding one more, and now that I've seen episode 6, I am fully in love with the show. Shoutout to TLoVM Keyleth, absolutely the best version of the character. Be it as a result of the editing process / not having to improv or other reasons, Marisha and the writers succeeded in making Keyleth an awkward but enjoyable character who is really sweet (and, some would argue, "far less annoying").

@@leahbeah1585 Ooo ooo! Me, Mr. Kottah! I hate Amazon (except for their exclusives which I'm compelled to buy)! From what I've seen initially, the show is rather entertaining. Most of the jokes land, the pacing is fine, and the animation is... sufficient in the pandemic timeframe was given... ... BUT to call it a D&D show is quite the severe stretch. It's like calling Game of Thrones a D&D show, despite its own inceptive influence. No rules are followed, the lipservice is bare, the action is exaggerated to Madhouse levels (is D&D supposed to be BESM only?) with the crits being too critical and the fumbles sparse. VM is supposed to be the also-ran hero party (as the prologue would allude), but they turn out to be top level superfriends (a trait specific to 5E play). The spirit of the stream is definitely intact, but the game's specifics are glossed over. I can't fathom how anyone new to all this is supposed to ween any inclination to play D&D, let alone be aware of its existence, much like Game of Thrones. They would have to be told this was a D&D game or fall into the rabbit hole of the internet to discover for themselves, and you know how rabbit holes go ( *shakes fist at algorithms* ). I would watch more, but only saw the first two for free at a local friend's place, and I don't do subscriptions. If it hits DVD, that's more like it!

To be fair about Grog's announcement of rage, it IS his signature, ICONIC line. Not that they should overuse it, which they haven't done so far, but having it now and then really hypes things up for a satisfying and bloody result. That's kind of what he's doing himself anyway when he roars it...hyping himself up into a beserker rage to slaughter whatever poor, unfortunate foe is left before him to face his wrath... It makes sense to me!

On the bit about Grog saying "I would like to rage" I'll say two things from the lense of someone who hasn't seen campaign one. Firstly I've been told the line is pretty iconic so it would be sad not to see it. Secondly I think it's actually quite fitting for the character. Throughout the show we see Grog always getting super exited to fight but still having enough restraint to usually ask permission from pyke or someone else on the team. So when he says I would like to rage I see it as him asking permission to go all out and get super mad but he's just too hyped up to actually control himself regardless.

As someone that watched a couple of newbie react channels cover the show so far I agree that there are confusing elements in the show for people that weren't into DnD/Critical Role before but those moments really are far between and from what I've seen it's mostly because we got a massive cast of different characters we're introduced to rather quickly so I've seen people struggle a bit with understanding the capabilities of every character. That being said for the most part it works, which is pretty damn impressive, and just seeing people who have never engaged with DnD love the show is a good sign in my opinion. Sure, Scanlan's illusions or Keyleth's wildshape ability might make someone raise an eyebrow if it's the first time seeing it but the show does a pretty good job to stay consistent with the powers so far - which is probably why they started the Brimscythe prestream stuff at a higher powerlevel in the show than what they would have been in their actual campaign, because streamlining those aspects of the characters makes it less confusing to newbie watchers. Let's be real, DnD characters grow massively in power in a pretty short amount of in-game time so if they kept to that in the short span of episodes they got it would confuse the hell out of everyone who hasn't seen the actual campaing.

The only real criticism I have of LoVM, and by "criticism" I mean more like a nitpick, is how it feels like Vex and Vax have flipped, regarding their feelings towards the group. In the original game, Vex was pretty invested in this group of misfits and Vax was emotionally distant, whereas now Vex is the one who is emotionally distant and Vax is the one who feels invested in the group. Again, it's not a major criticism, just a difference I noticed and I'm curious if there was any particular reason for the change. Other than that, I've thoroughly enjoyed my time watching it!

It bugged me so that’s why it sticks out and I’m not super happy they are leaning into it so much but I’m pretty sure they’re doing it to set up some serious character growth later when their bond is solidified during all the shit they’re about to go through.

@@majorzipf8947 tbh, I thought I might have been remembering incorrectly, since it has been a while since I had listened to the Briarwoods arc. However, I asked my friend who's been re-listening to campaign 1 and he confirmed what I thought, that Vax and Vex in the show feel like they've had their feelings on the group at large flipped. I am interested to see how this change affects their story arcs from here on out, since I feel like a big part of why Vax being on borrowed time from the Raven Queen hit so hard was because of his emotional distance from the group until his time was almost up.

Great review. As much as I loved hearing Grog say "I would like to rage", I have to admit that it would seem a little weird to someone who's never seen the campaign. I thought it was intentional, iirc Keyleth was using that spell a lot, it was her go-to spell when in doubt. I can't really guess at how a non-critter will feel about the repitition, I can imagine it might look like the one thing that works so she is sticking to her safe spell because she is scared to use new ones in case she messes them up.

You will see more of that as well. Her magic largely surrounds around amplifying the already occurring flora, so a lot of it ends up being roots and vines. Also, they do use a lot of the same spells multiple times. Like Scanlan’s Hand. Also, also. They said in one of the watch parties that they intentionally gave each person’s magic a very specific look, color palette and sound set. So, with all that said, I think it’s actually very cool that we can see a spell and know who cast it, regardless of if we see that actual casting or not.

I still wished they made the first 2 episodes a CR special/ prologue then follow it up with the Briarwood arc taking the whole 12 episodes. If you watched CR, you know that their good standing with Uriel and Emon comes from a long cultivated relationship. By truncating their relationship to a smaller good deed and a dinner, they have made Uriel very unimportant and not at all fleshed out. Their fall from grace in Emon also became less significant. Making it a special then follow it up with a vague indication that there was a time skip would reduce that consequence

Gotta be honest, I've spoken to people who have no clue about D&D or Critical Role ... they just assumed Grog's "I would like to RAGE!" was equivalent to other 'powering up' you'd see in other anime and never gave it a second thought. In short, I don't think in this context it took anything away from the show at all. As for commenters saying this will make D&D mainstream, I hope it does. There are D&D video games (looking at you Neverwinter - it's MMO) that went down the microtransaction wormhole ... this has exactly zero to do with the pen and paper D&D.

I'm so glad you mentioned that gatekeeping in the CR community. It's ridiculous! If you don't LOVE every part of it 110% you're not a fan, apparently. That's just not healthy. There are absolutely things that they can do better but a lot of fans actively go out and shut down those people voicing their concerns, and that's just not good. For instance, I posted the above on another video and had a dozen comments telling me that I clearly don't understand blah, blah, blah. I didn't hate it, I just wanted it to slow down a bit, that's all.

I feel like there is a lot of context with the beginning rant 😂. Always pro critical role!

I love the Legend of Vox Machina. The only critic I would have is the animation at times leaves something to be desired at times. It's probably because the characters have styles similar to the DC animated stuff and it threw me off a bit. Other than that, it's really cool and good show. I don't know. I think most concerns people have about it potentially "harming" D&D is just kinda uncalled for. Also, do you think we'd have a chance to see Arkhan pull off the legendary move he did on Vox Machina in animation form? I think that'd be cool

I watched and enjoyed the first campaign, but it's not always easy to find four hours to sit down and watch the latest episode.

Tbh dunegons and dragons is already "mainstream" its known as the first roleplaying game and channels with large subs talk about/play them and its on popular shows such as stranger things in the first episode

In keeping with the times, I will put microtransactions in my D&D games. $1.99 gets you 200 gold (health potions cost 125 gold).
