@@achmadfauzan507 He is too good of a singer now. Corey Taylor used to get similar critique about his screams because he got very good at them.(they didn't sound as raspy and he stopped hurting his voice) A lot of metal heads don't like pop musician voices because of that. They are too perfect. Chester Bennington got shit when first linkin park showed up because of the same thing. (They were called a boyband and all that stuff)
Saw system at Rock Werchter in 2017 and Serj absolutely smashed it. He was singing "Darts" and Suite Pie" from SOAD's debut album and he still screamed en growled but "different" it was higher but you could hear the lyrics a lot better
that's because rock werchter and parklife 2017 were the best shows since berlin 2013 and pre-hiatus. You're lucky you got to see soad with a near old energy tankian.
I seriously enjoy Serj’s post System solo stuff. Elect The Dead and Harakiri are masterpieces and on rotation often for me. Also enjoy Scars On Broadway.
As someone who has studied vocal pedagogy, I’m gonna throw my two cents in here… and please don’t take this the wrong way! It’s not that he “can’t” sing anymore, he never sang properly in the first place. When I say “properly”, I mean he didn’t take care of his voice and didn’t know how to place everything in the vocal mechanism. Personally, when I listen to him sing now, he sounds even more strained to me, and puts everything in his throat. His current technique or lack thereof results in that grating nasally tone. I’ve been the biggest SOAD fan for years and listened to most of his solo work, but I can’t pretend that he hasn’t damaged his voice significantly and hasn’t really learned to sustain it after all these years.
Very interesting comment. In my turn I noticed, in the Phoenix concert held at the end of January, a great tension and a certain difficulty in reaching and maintaining the highest notes. Perhaps, he is aware of the problem with his vocal cords and this makes him even more strained when he has to sing the higher and more aggressive parts. In an old interview in Japan, when the interviewer asked him how he did all those screams, he replied: "I do it and I don't think about it." Maybe, instead, it would have been better he had thought of it. The metal singing style is one of the most demanding and requires an impeccable technique, which he evidently did not have. Having said that, Serj and SOAD are and remain great musicians, I always listen to them with infinite pleasure.
The concert SOAD did for "Santiago Gets Louder 2015" in Chile contains one of Serj's best performances ever imo, it has the best screams I've ever heard him pull off, I highly recommend the "Question!" performance in particular!
Singing like he did in the self titled - steal this album era really has to do a number on your voice . You can find certain modern videos where serj let’s it belt like the old days , but props to him for doing what he has to do to protect his voice
You showed two clips of him doing screams from 9 years ago. While I agree it's not as bad as a lot of people make it out to be, you gotta admit he just isn't as good as he was in the early days, at least when it comes to harsher vocals. He did do some at a recent early 2022 live show, but mostly when you're waiting for him to scream his soul out, you get a disappointing whailing sound. His clean vocals are crazy these days though, and since he doesn't wanna do metal anymore anyway, who can really blame him for preserving his voice and not doing inhale screams and whatnot
Inhale screams are really bad for your voice. It's not that he is not as good anymore, he is better now. It's just that straight up screaming sounds better than correct scream that does not hurt your voice.
@@gandalainsley6467 Yeah... no. If you scream properly, it can sound absolutely mind blowing if you have the expertise. I won't deny that literally shouting sounds pretty visceral, but you can only do so much, not taking into account the fact that you will give yourself a vocal hemorrhage. Serj doesn't know how to scream, plain and simple. He can do some growling to an extent, but the times he actually does it correctly is maybe once or twice a show. Inhale screams suck ass, and his regular screaming is very obviously improper technique. Amazing singer nonetheless.
Well to be fair Serj wanted to move away from metal and metalheads are always going to be judgy of that fact or say he sucks or whatever. He has such a unique voice, noone can recreate it or i'm sure would find it very hard to scream in that same style. So the point in redundant, also System has been done for ages and we all know noone will ever regard his solo career as heavily as his System material. so take it how it was at his best and just enjoy the old system albums for what they are
His voice has matured. That's what happened. He's trained, and developed more control over his voice. Which is kinda insane, really, because he was never really lacking in control over his voice.
You have chosen the right example: Patton has used his voice in every possible and imaginable way and has "scrambled" it even more and for longer than Serj, since Patton has been on the crest of a wave since the late 80's, yet, still today, he has a remarkable voice and can sing anything, just hear the last concert at Eureka with Mr. Bungle. Evidently, either his technique was better or he was luckier than Serj and managed to preserve his vocal cords better.
you should check Peter Steele from Type o negative, deepest and most amazing voice i ever heard on metal and a really particular guy there are a couple of videos from his crazy low vocal range, dude was a tank
Sehr Tankian is a great inspiration and has been since I first listened to the SOAD self titled album, things evolve, everything changes, except the essence.
Don't want to disrespect Serj, I'll always love the man, but for No Tomorrow he had a little...."technological" help, if you know what I mean, still he sounds spectacular in that song
Just listen "No Tomorrow" from Metal Hellsinger. If somebody after that song will say to you that he still believe Serj can't scream - this person is deaf.
his original sound he got from using improper technique and now he's learnt proper technique, so of course its going to sound different and imo it sounds better
Saw them live in 2011 and it was fantastic, saw them in January in AZ 2022 with Korn and you can even go watch videos, the man was uninspired, unenthusiastic, and just did not care. I love Serj and always got his back but there's no denying that his voice is way different as well as his showmanship, and I'm pretty sure it has to do with him having had covid.
Before I even watch the video... Just based off the title? Legit. I think Serj can still hit every note flawlessly... I think he just doesn't care about SOAD as much as he used to. Cause you can definitely see he takes a bit more pride in his solo work shows. When he sings to SOAD it just seems like he wants the show to be over... I could totally be wrong and that could just be his demeanor but ill never forget watching his BDO videos back in 05ish? Amazing.
if you go back, his voice really hasnt changed that much. if you compare some of his higher vocals from when he sang in system and some of his vocals from his newer music? not much has changed. he's just not singing low notes as often as he used to.
Obviously it's not like "he lost it" totally. It's just that some of the older songs don't sound that great live now with his new approach to vocals, e.g. Toxicity. The new material sounds just fine, probably as it was written with keeping this new vocals style in mind in the first place.
There are obvious differences between live performances like Lowlands and the more recent live show in Armenia. Lowlands was raw and brutal since the band was fresh and young but I understand Serj's point here; consistency and a safe technique/dialing the harshness down is better in the long run to avoid completely blowing out your voice.
I must be out of the loop because I’ve never heard anyone question his vocals. Elect the Dead was a vocal masterpiece and while I’m not super immersed in his newest stuff, everything that I have heard has sounded like normal Serj to me. SoaD was obviously a more aggressive style but saying he doesn’t have it anymore is ridiculous.
He just sings more armenian folk musik more often, so his waveyness bleed in more often in live performences. Malakin and Tankian improvised all the time so I dont care, it gives the liveevents a more unique edge and makes it more speciale. Serj should try to hit the vocal lines from aerials more often, his smooth voice is always a much apreciated pleasure to hear.
It’s ironical that it was hi attempt to find notes that gave that unique texture and feel. He is right. Artists can’t repeat the same shift without feeling. We need to keep evolving
I don't think he lost it, he simply is lazy and always sings the same live. Because he is getting old and you can save energy singing like that, because if he sings the good way maybe he could only do 2 songs per concert.
vocalists just try to preserve their chords lol, Corey Taylor is an example of it, everyone tought he completely wasted his vocals back in 2007 then he did some insane screaming with soulfly as a gues in one concert and in all hope is gone there was some moments he did insane screams in the record, then the same after the gray chapter in the iowa 15 years anyversary he did some crazy stuff in some moments, Vocalists just can scream the shit out every year carelessly
Well is is 55, Fred durst doesn’t sound the sam either it’s kinda funny. Second Serj has evolved his singing, I was a huge fan of his solo stuff and even though it’s squidwardly, he does some amazing stuff
His voice change fits his own music perfectly but when applied to the old SOAD classics its sounds horrible most of the time. Yes he can still growl, but that mighty roar he had is completely gone. They should never have reformed in my opinion.
what do you mean by can't sing Anymore? He has never been a vocalist. He never knew how to sing and has no skills to do it properly. He sings through his nose and when he sings, he does not base on the diaphragm, but sings with his throat. As a result he can’t simply hold one note for even 1-2 seconds, it is vibrating. Vibrating not because of the “special” techniques, it vibrates simply because of lack of air in the lungs. This guy was not born vocalist. He’s not Bon Jovi or Mercury
People really keep spreading misinformation like him being "classically trained" when even in his best performances, he doesn't even know how to use basic techniques like vowel modification to hit a note (like for example the dvd version of Gate 21). He's mostly an activist and a poet, singing has always been just a tool to get his messages across and he really doesn't care about improving. Which is a shame, since I think he has such a beautiful, expressive voice and could become so amazing if he tried.
Sorry, but he has always been inconsistant live because of his lack of training. People really keep spreading misinformation like him being "classically trained" when even in his best performances, he doesn't even know how to use basic techniques like vowel modification to hit a note (like for example the dvd version of Gate 21). He is my favorite singer, is who I learn to sing and be a frontman watching. But really, for metal like system, he doesn't have more voice, and am not talking about scream, but he clean voice doesn't have energy for system, I watch every single performance he did, with system and solo, and that's obviously to me, that solo he still having a awesome voice, but for system, isn't enough, that's why I think it's better that we haven't a new soad album, last month he release a new metal song for a game, a really great metal song that doesn't sound like system, and even being great, we can see that serj have a better voice then 10y ago, but still not enough to a heavy metal frontman, I love him and it's hard to me say that's things
this is true to some form but i dont think its artistically redundant to keep distorting your voice when it added so much colors to early system days and it had some characteristics that made you unique as a singer . For example, corey taylor. He sings like an angel and can still distort his voice yet keeping his vocal chords in good shape and the man is also in his 50s. The thing is serj never wanted to be a metal singer so he doesnt have that desire to distort his voice. he left system in 05 and had the freedom to sing the way he always wanted to sing and thats without screaming so hes stuck with that mindset ever since. After he left system he stopped screaming all together thats probaly why he wanted to leave system before hypnotize/mezmerize because he didnt want to keep doing metal he wanted to take system in a softer direction but since daron is the songwriter of the band and him being a metal fan since a kid thats where creative differences arose. i personally loved his vocals in elect the dead i think his softer voice fitted really well with that album
Darren lost more vocal capabilities than Serj.... he doesnt scream much anymore(which is understandable) serj seems to have figured out healthier singing techniques.
I still have major respect for the guy as he influenced my music greatly and is a true badass. I just dont really like the current direction he has taken with his voice personally.
